Lovely comfortable day dress

BelligerentGhoul · 11/09/2010 14:38

I would like a really soft, comfortable dress that I could wear fairly smartly to work, or that would also be nice to just sling on with boots for weekends. I'd like it to be knee length or just over (and am a short arse) and have a scoop or v neck that is okay for norks.

Please help.

Preferably plain rather than patterned. Maybe grey? Or navy?

Someone on another thread linked to these jersry dresses artigiano. There are a really good price I particulary like the GINA just not sure about the length. I would say that they are midlength and I am pretty sure that midlength is in for a/w

what does everyone else think of them?

BelligerentGhoul · 12/09/2010 16:44

Don't like those, sorry Scotgirl. On me, they would just look very frumpy.

Well - I have walked all over town today and failed miserably. The Gap ones were just shapeless. The M&S ones were quite nice but about a foot too long.

AND I couldn't find any shoes to fit my silly, narrow little feet. :(

Might have to go to The White Company in Solihull for a big trying on session!

llareggub · 12/09/2010 18:12

I was in Solihull White Company about 6 hours ago!

BelligerentGhoul · 12/09/2010 19:29

Did you buy/try anything? Come on, spill! :)

CaptainNancy · 12/09/2010 19:31

Oh yes- Gap dresses are just awful atm! The fabrics were rubbishy too...

llareggub... eek! We may have brushed shoulders... 6 hours ago you say... Shock

BG- I had no time to look in JL... my delightful pair were rather lively today

llareggub · 12/09/2010 20:14

I was wearing a Gap dress CaptainNancy. I really like them at the moment. They are perfect for slobbing around with the children and wash really well. I know that I'll wear them to death then chuck 'em out. I was in JL too; sat on my own in the cafe and it was bliss.

I didn't try on anything in EC because of the over-keen shop assistant. He made me feel like a shoplifter. I must look guilty!

llareggub · 12/09/2010 20:15

I meant to say eeek back! What a coincidence.

CaptainNancy · 12/09/2010 20:34

The young man? yes he was a bit hawk-like, wasn't he? Couldn't do my refund though Hmm I had to wait nearly 10 minutes... grr.
Oh my word... we ate at JL... you weren't the lovely lady who said she felt like changing her name sometimes????

llareggub · 12/09/2010 21:06

Not me, though I do say that sometimes.

I was also in Gap spending my 30% off voucher,Zara, M&S and Paperchase.

It WAS that hawk-like young man. I wonder if he is new?

CaptainNancy · 12/09/2010 23:29

ROFL- well he wasn't there last week when I purchased the dress I was returning.... Grin
I too was in Gap... oh dear.. you are my shopping twin and we didn't know it!

(though I didn't buy anything in Gap... the children had really had enough by then)

Loving this thread - some fab dresses and WC is calling to me....

BG - on a trip to Ireland OH and I decided to fit in a meal and a movie, but I hadn't brought anything smart/casual to wear out so borrowed this dress phase eightfrom a rellie. It's quite plain and could be dressed up or down.

Now it's not the sort of thing I would normally go for, but it was darned comfy and flattering on so am seriously considering a purchase myself. I'm 5'3" and it was not too far below knee length. The actual owner of the dress comes up at e-g norkage depending upon the store, and does not look overly norked when wearing the dress IYSWIM.

Doodleydoo · 13/09/2010 16:31

teej, I like that dress
BG, thank you for starting this thread (apologies for not contributing a useful dress!) but wanted to let you know that you have badly inspired me to spend money at wc on a batwing top and a tunic - very dangerous indeed!

slug · 13/09/2010 17:06

I love this and am wearing a version of this at work today. Am exceedingly large of nork myself but the neckline still works

dexter73 · 13/09/2010 17:13

I have a couple of those ruched dresses from Phase Eight from previous seasons. They are really lovely. I am a D cup.

BelligerentGhoul · 13/09/2010 17:37

Nope - the Phase Eight ones are deffo not good on me. I mean, really, really not good. I look like my grandma in them.

Basically what I really want is something that is fitted enough to give shape but still comfortable, is not polyester, is just above the knee on a 5'2 short-arse and that makes my norks like like Gwynneth Paltrow's, rather than Hattie Jaques'.

I need Anglomania really, don't I? :)

FrameyMcFrame · 13/09/2010 19:37

I just boughtthis dress last week.
It says tunic but as I am a short arse it falls above the knee on me.
I have big norks (32e as well) and it is quite flattering on.

BelligerentGhoul · 13/09/2010 21:29

Thanks Framey. Not over-fond of Fat Face stuff though, sorry.

I may go and try on a couple in Phase Eight next weekend.

Also, has anybody with norks tried on this Mint Velvet one?

OP posts:
BelligerentGhoul · 13/09/2010 21:30

Love the drapey bit on it. That with a scooop or v neck is exactly the kind of thing I'm after.

OP posts:
Doodleydoo · 14/09/2010 14:51

Love that dress, bg, do you have big norks and a long neck? If your neck is on the short side (like mine Hmm) then it might be too high but it is gorgeous!

BelligerentGhoul · 14/09/2010 17:11

Yes, I do have big norks and a long neck! I will go and try it on. :)

squix · 14/09/2010 21:56

I have just bought this Laura Ashley dress and really love it - it's just past knee length for me (I am 5'7) and this from Hobbs which is shorter and seems to be very flattering, but I do wear a vest/camisole underneath to avoid gapage.

BelligerentGhoul · 14/09/2010 22:17

Hobbs links always just go to the main page.

I like the LA one but their stuff is always FAR too long for me. :(

OP posts:
Doodleydoo · 14/09/2010 22:54

BG you are one lucky lady - big norks and a long neck Envy, if it doesn't havea v neck or low neck there isn't much point in me even looking at it in the shop or online and I quite often have to trinny and suzannah myself - hope it looks good!

FiveOrangePips · 14/09/2010 23:30

too busy? I don't usually get on with GP - I think I am too vertically challenged and norky (30G)

FiveOrangePips · 14/09/2010 23:32

oops sorry it is polyester!
Have you tried h&m?
