Umm why do you all hate Crocs so much?

Are they never acceptable? Even the Mary Jane ones. I have two pairs and I love them and they go with everything (Black and Bronze).

I am starting to feel a little self conscious about them now though as they seem to be so despised here on MN.

Have even name changed for this thread.

Do you apply the 'look rubbish but I don't care, they're comfy' approach to other items of clothing - in public....?

Yes, yes I do, I walk my dog wearing all manner of crap. Why the hell would I be so vain as to care what people think I look like when walking the dog?

hmc · 13/08/2010 19:47

I was at a campsite last year wearing crocs and two middle aged middle class men who frankly should know better sniggered audibly "Croc-a-doodle-do", so when I passed them I did a sort of coughing sound /clearing of throat noise ending in the appellation 'wankers'. I was quite pleased because they would have heard it, but not been absolutely sure that they had heard it, so it left them unable to respond

dexter73 · 13/08/2010 19:49

I read a quote from someone recently that went along the lines of " vain? Yes I am but surely that is better than inflicting myself on other people when I look crap". Can't remember the exact quote or who it was from but it did make me laugh!

hmc · 13/08/2010 19:49

On a serious note, I think this kind of 'apperance facism' has a lot to answer for, one of the reasons why it must be so hard to be a burns victim, someone who has had reconstructive cancer surgery or someone who just looks a bit different. But I think I may be getting a bit heavy for a discussion re crocs Grin

hmc · 13/08/2010 19:50

dexter - that would just make me think - shallow, sad individual. However I do have a sense of humour!

hmc · 13/08/2010 19:50

(somewhere)

whomovedmychocolate · 13/08/2010 19:53

grumbles - yes I think they look okay. I wouldn't wear them otherwise.

grumblegrumble · 13/08/2010 20:00

OK.

I don't like them.

I don't dress for other people, but I do dress in a way I think flatters me - and crocs def don't. I just find it odd that someone would go out knowing, or not caring, that they are wearing something they think 'looked crap' or was ugly (if that's your opinion of crocs). When you can get perfectly good plimsolls that are comfy and practical and more flattering for £3.

BuzzingNoise · 13/08/2010 20:01

I love my crocs and ds loves his too.

TheMoonOnAStick · 13/08/2010 20:03

Blimey hmc that's an odd experience re the camping.

I thought nearly everyone wore them camping fgs. So not only were you being sniggered at by the fashion police for wearing crocs camping, but that the fashion police in question were a couple of old men. What were they wearing out of interest - spats and waistcoatsHmm?

I like your reply thoughGrin.

hmc · 13/08/2010 20:04

Well, I don't think they look hideously ugly - I see them as functional, a bit like wellies I suppose. Why is it odd not to particularly care about what you look like? - perhaps it because I is a country bumpkin Grin. Seriously the people around me in the post office are a little muddy or might pong a bit of horse manure - there is not much of a premium placed on satorial issues

hmc · 13/08/2010 20:04

They weren't old - just 40 ish (like me!) - but fully fledged Boden men

withorwithoutyou · 13/08/2010 20:06

Grumble - because plimsolls are flattering?!

Threelittleducks · 13/08/2010 20:07

They are boke.
They gie me the dry boke.

And thae wee jewel things are boggin'.

Lauriefairycake · 13/08/2010 20:07

Fitflops do not look hideous.

I have the pewter ones with three beads up the front - you can't even tell that they're fit flops as the logo is practically invisible

here

TheMoonOnAStick · 13/08/2010 20:07

Aah 40-ish is very young!

But now you mention the magic B word it all fall into place. I detest Boden. It's so twee.

withorwithoutyou · 13/08/2010 20:07

OP - you have to rememmber this is mumsnet, where women of a certain age think converse look flattering on them!

Threelittleducks · 13/08/2010 20:07

Also, I am a firm believer that you can tell a person's personality by the shoes they choose to wear.

hmc · 13/08/2010 20:09

I don't like the 'wee jewel things' either - (definitely 'boggin') only because I think those are a little infantalising (never realised I was bilingual!)

hmc · 13/08/2010 20:10

Go on then ThreeLittleDucks - expound your theory on personality and shoe linkage, and perhaps I'll expound mine....

withorwithoutyou · 13/08/2010 20:12

God I LOVE being able to wear what I want regardless.

How depressing to be so worried about what other people think about how you look all the time.

Some people are so insecure.

Grin
hmc · 13/08/2010 20:14

WithOrWithout - I like your style (no pun intended)

dexter73 · 13/08/2010 20:17

I wouldn't wear Crocs because I think they look awful, not because I am worried about what other people think.

grumblegrumble · 13/08/2010 20:23

Exactly dexter - it's not about what other people think, but if you think they 'look crap' or are ugly, why wear them?

And plimsolls are more flattering than crocs. There is nothing less flattering than crocs (possibly bare feet with cracked heels...?)

withorwithoutyou · 13/08/2010 20:25

I don't consider either plimsolls or crocs to be flattering.

They're functional.
