Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

I used to live and work in Scotland. I'm English. I worked in pubs. I wasn't allowed to work during England games because two English members of staff had been abused (one physically) after the game (both times when England won). It was only 8 or so years ago. The hatred was real.

PersilPower · 12/07/2024 13:19

My partner is half Scottish, half Spanish, raised in Scotland and we live in England (he’s lived here 30 years and we have 2 kids born here). His support is:
1 Scotland
2 Spain
3 everyone else in the entire world
4 England

On saying that, it’s a huge source of amusement in our very laid back house.

DP is Welsh (Welsh Dad, English Mum, born and grew up in Wales until adulthood) and is furious England are in the final. He is supporting Spain. All of his Welsh friends are the same.

Also states our child will categorically be a Wales fan and over his dead body will I ever dress them in an England kit (apparently this caused murders between his parents as his Mum used to do this after his parents divorced). I don’t give two hoots about football so don’t care either way.

I actually think this could be quite harmful for your children if being English is part of their identity. I think it's a horrible attitude. It's like you're rejecting part of your child.

Jellybeanz456 · 12/07/2024 13:22

Scotland Wales Ireland and everywhere else hate us for whatever reasons probably something from long b4 my time and the fact the fans act appalling and seem to lose all self control when it comes to football.

To add, I also got a huge amount of hassle for being black too which I rarely get openly in England. Twas a double whammy.

MotherOfBeardedDragons · 12/07/2024 13:24

I don't have anti-English sentiment, except for in football and I think most Scots are the same. The commentators, media and fans are so unbelievably arrogant and self-assured and it really gets on my last nerve. Will never hear the end of it if England win. The players aren't much better. I feel similarly about France and actively support whoever is playing either team 😂

Have to laugh at the PP with the sour grapes comments, as if Scotland actually thought they had a shot- we know we are shite, we were happy just to be there. It's called being humble 😜

We have regional TV in a lot of cases. Maybe sports should fall into that category?

We do sometimes have regional sports programmes in Scotland and our commentators are similarly biased in those, but my point is that England isn't forced to watch them, whereas WE are forced to look on as YOUR commentators treat a UK-wide broadcast as if it's an English regional programme (and it doesn't only happen in sports).

Werweisswohin · 12/07/2024 13:28

SirChenjins · 12/07/2024 13:18

That's interesting - I always find their attitude changes when I correct them and say I'm now from Scotland.

There's definitely less anti-Scottish sentiment (though there's some rude/obnoxious Scots too).

Tanfastic · 12/07/2024 13:30

I'm English but have a lot of Scottish family who openly spout their venom for England on social media when they play knowing their very English relatives can see their posts. It pisses me off. My dad was Scottish but lived in England but supported both, as do I.

Bathbombin · 12/07/2024 13:38

The English would want Scotland to win, but they would not want England to win. I like to imagine that this is due to jokey rivalry, but it looks pretty convincing, and malicious, to me.

Getonwitit · 12/07/2024 13:39

HowIrresponsible · 12/07/2024 11:24

Scotland doesn't have any sports teams that are capable of winning anything so it is just sour grapes amd childish behaviour.

Lots of love xx

It really isn't sour grapes. Since '66 the media have told us England will win every game they have ever played. Scot's go to tournaments to have fun, if we score a single goal it is a bonus but we really are only there for the party. England fans singing it's coming home at the start of every tournament is hilarious as it has been over half a century since they brought anything home. Let's hope that come Sunday night they are bringing the cup home.

CheeseNPickle3 · 12/07/2024 13:40

If someone genuinely likes Spain and wants them to win then fine - no problems.

However, supporting them just because they want another team to lose isn't sporting.

That's the difference.

J97King · 12/07/2024 13:48

I'm Scottish but live in England. My brother hates me for it. He genuinely believes that being Scottish is some kind of superiority, a super gift. He is fanatical SNP and criticises everything English. He is horrified by the football - and I am loving it! I will be supporting England along with my English family.

nietzscheanvibe · 12/07/2024 13:51

Werweisswohin · 12/07/2024 12:44

The commentators on the coverage from the opening match, Germany v Scotland, didn't take long to start talking about England's chances. Despite knowing our team wasn't great we weren't even allowed to just enjoy being part of the opening match with our hosts!

And THIS! 👆

SirChenjins · 12/07/2024 13:52

@J97King And to balance that out I have a sister who lives in England who has nothing but disdain for Scotland. She and her family mimic our accents, make really derogatory and offensive comments about everyone north of the border, revelled in the fact Scotland went out early on and she’s told her daughters they should never move here in case they become Scottish. There are a-holes everywhere.

nietzscheanvibe · 12/07/2024 14:00

Collexifon · 12/07/2024 12:42

I guess Scotland got so badly humbled by Germany which will increase the schadenfreude if England don't win.

We're already humble, that's the difference, it's your arrogance we dislike.

circular2478 · 12/07/2024 14:00

@Hoardasurass
It's actually the British and Irish Lions

Narcissisticflipflop · 12/07/2024 14:04

It’s listening to English commentators ripping the team to shreds then as soon as a goal is scored they’re the best thing since sliced bread 🙄
if they do win the tournament then it’s all we’re going to hear about for the next 60 years til they win something again, it’s the expectation that they SHOULD win that annoys most scots including me who hopes Spain win 🤣

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 14:06

DramaLlamaBangBang · 12/07/2024 13:15

I mean they haven't had a victory in nearly 60 years! That chant is embarrassing when those fat yobbos who sing it would probably not be seen for dust in a world war and it's against Germany a lot of the time who have won everything going. England fans can't even show grace in defeat!
Having said that, I do hope they win, but yes, the crowing as if they are the greatest living sporting team is just embarrassing.

England has a population of 56 million, how many have you heard singing that chant?

I honestly don’t know anyone who thinks England are the best sporting team. Three lions is a self deprecating song about how England never win but we still have hope that never really amounts to anything.

English commentators have been saying that Spain is a stronger team and England have had luck on their side. Lots of English fans have been moaning about their performance. But it’s undeniable that England do have a lot of world class players on their team.

MumofSpud · 12/07/2024 14:06

My Scottish dad would never support England in football and would even cheer on (traditionally ol' enemies) like Germany / Argentina
But my Irish husband wouldn't mind cheering on England (lives in England) as he said it's a good atmosphere when they win (at work / in the country etc)

I would want commentators who just say they’re playing great, their job is to analyse the game and I’d rather them be honest if they don’t think the tactics are right or a penalty is deserved. I’m sure you’d complain if they were too biased and just said England played great all the time! But as they’re English it doesn’t change the fact they want their team to win so of course they’re going to celebrate goals - what’s wrong with that?

I don’t get the thing about arrogance at all, I just don’t see it from the players or English supporters. Maybe a very small minority of the hooligan types who sing offensive chants. But most England supporters want to win while always thinking they never will (and even when they do that it wasn’t deserved)!

Scottish athlete representing GB wins anything they're called British same for the Welsh and Irish yet when it's an English athlete they're always called English, it's the double standards

As far as I am aware it is all ‘Team GB’ in the Olympics. I never hear it mentioned that an athlete is ‘English’ and not British when it comes to Team GB. It’s football, rugby, cricket, etc, where they talk about English/Welsh/Scottish,Northern Irish.
