Do Scottish fans really not support England?

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

I’m English with a Scottish DH and I want Spain to win as I’ve got a bet on it. 😂

Because you cited this as a reason for the Scottish to support England: I think it’s natural to feel a sense of kinship when you have so much in common, shared experiences and cultural references. The USA strikes me as fitting this brief, even over european countries.

Maybe it's because I'm not a big football fan, but I don't relaly understand this ranked preference system. I support the country I have settled in and the country I grew up in. I don't really have a long list of who else I want to see win. I don't care who wins between Spain and France, or between Netherlands and Georgia, or against Germany and England. I might prefer England to win purely so my wider family will be happy, but in my heart I don't care at all.

The USA doesn’t fit that brief. The UK is culturally much closer to a number of other European countries than it is to the US when it comes to politics, religion, sport, values, social norms etc. When living abroad and working for international organisations it was Americans I probably found it most difficult to connect to. https://www.bi.team/blogs/british-and-european-values-are-they-one-and-the-same/

Clearly you don’t get what I’m talking about and can’t process subtleties. Of course I don’t think ‘EVERYONE’ in Scotland is doing anything. It’s just that sense that the undercurrent of anti-English contempt could surface at some point which I can’t predict. It’s unnerving that anti-English contempt is so undisguised and widespread - it puts me on edge.

Why do you think there is widespread anti-English contempt not just in other parts of the UK but across the world? I’m English but now living in another country and so see it from the outside. I have some insight but I’m curious as to what you think it might stem from - and if you could refrain from chips on shoulder type comments that would be great as they don’t show us in the best light.

And across the whole of Europe since Brexit.

Yes, although the rise of the far right in Europe and the positivity in the UK with the new government seems to have tempered that attitude a bit.

Out of interest, why don’t we have a British football and rugby team, like we do for athletics?

We do in rugby they're called the British lions 🙄

It was a joke.

It was an embarrassing match for Scotland, but they had a bad draw it's true.

Oh right.

Of the top of my head: Brits abroad, legacy of the Empire, football louts.

I was going to answer this, then I thought ‘ODFOD’ with that patronising ‘chip on the shoulder’ ‘best light’ comment. Remain curious.

If it's any consolation, there's quite a bit of anti-Englsih sentiment in touristy areas of spain as well...

I wonder why.....

Brits, having seen the Scottish fans after their defeat by Hungary.

The English have been very well behaved this Euros.

If I’m in England on my English sofa watching English tv and a Scottish commentator talking about Scotland talks about “we” and “us” that wouldn’t bother me one jot - I want to hear from a Scottish person talking about their team.

I would also be supporting Scotland if they were playing anyone except a home nations team.

Some Scots seem to have a massive inferiority complex. self confident people just don’t behave like that.

But you're not forced in England to watch a Scottish match where virtually ALL the commentators are Scottish, there's usually a balance. Nothing wrong with an English commentator saying "we", the annoyance comes from the assumption that they're talking to England, and forgetting that there are three other nations being broadcast to. It's like we're watching a dedicated regional English broadcast.

On the self-confidence and inferiority point, that might be valid, but we KNOW we're shite (I actually laughed when the late goal went in because I'd seen it so many times before). Whereas you guys think you DESERVE to win, a "superiority complex" if you like.

You criticise us for failing to support YOUR team, but you can't even support your OWN team properly - the reason you were shite in the earlier games was coz the players were scared to put a foot wrong for fear of being booed which, again, indicates entitlement on the part of the fans. It's all just a bit annoying. As someone else said, though, I did get behind the England women's team, not sure why.

Yes, I realise some people claiming widespread anti English sentiment do find it difficult to reflect on why it might be the case.

Yes, the fans have on this occasion. Others, not so much, as we all know.

user1471523071 · 12/07/2024 13:13

Why should football fans in Scotland support England - they are separate countries with their own national teams? I work in a city that is very multi-cultural and a lot of english people live there (guess which one!) - so the perceived 'anti-english' feeling is not everywhere and quite frankly, ridiculous and driven by the media. Surely people can see through some of this. Maybe some of the posters need to visit Scotland and see that it for themselves and realise it is not a subset of England.

One final point, Scotland football fans know they will never win anything, but enjoy the game for what it is, so the comments that it's just sour grapes is extremely childish.

Felmerbud · 12/07/2024 13:13

Not just Scotland - I live in North Wales and not a single one of my Welsh friends will be supporting England!
I’m English , with wales not qualifying then I will be supporting England - but my Welsh born children won’t be 🫤

Trouble? Didn’t see any. Doesn’t mean they didn’t happen though. Scotland were awarded fans of the tournament though.

PrincessPheebs · 12/07/2024 13:15

DP is Welsh (Welsh Dad, English Mum, born and grew up in Wales until adulthood) and is furious England are in the final. He is supporting Spain. All of his Welsh friends are the same.

Also states our child will categorically be a Wales fan and over his dead body will I ever dress them in an England kit (apparently this caused murders between his parents as his Mum used to do this after his parents divorced). I don’t give two hoots about football so don’t care either way.

If England could be gracious in victory instead of spouting all the crapwe hear non stop and all the press bs perhaps we Scots would cheer England on but no we get the 2 world wars and 1 world cup chants in the run up (yes I know that's a world cup chant but it's a valid example) along with demands of a bank holiday. Add to that whenever a Scottish athlete representing GB wins anything they're called British same for the Welsh and Irish yet when it's an English athlete they're always called English, it's the double standards and the denigrating of the other home nations sporting achievements especially when you consider that England has 10× the population of Scotland.
Basically until the English learn to stop being bragards we won't support them

I mean they haven't had a victory in nearly 60 years! That chant is embarrassing when those fat yobbos who sing it would probably not be seen for dust in a world war and it's against Germany a lot of the time who have won everything going. England fans can't even show grace in defeat!
Having said that, I do hope they win, but yes, the crowing as if they are the greatest living sporting team is just embarrassing.

“Brit” being the operative word - there is anti-British sentiment in Spain and European countries that attract the kind of British tourists that live up to stereotype of “Brits abroad”. Can’t really blame them.

That's interesting - I always find their attitude changes when I correct them and say I'm now from Scotland.
