Starting a thread as it is only weeks away.

The Welsh cyclist who I saw win a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the raising of the Welsh flag will be there- Emma Finucaine, one of the fastest women in the world on a cycle.

I wonder how many spare medals they make for occasions where joint medals are won and what they do with the ones that aren't given out.

In his sublime book about the Italia 90 World Cup ("All Played Out"), Pete Davies gloriously described the Italian national anthem as being like a three-act comic opera, as it just goes on and on - I think of that description every time I hear it!

If they have that for every medal event thats a lot of unused medals at the end of the Olympics and they are not cheap.

Diving has really suffered from Covid, and the Ukraine war. China’s performance centres were unaffected.

Ukraine and Russia used to be top teams. No US and we’re missing a lot of European teams and others such as Malaysia and Japan.

GB focussed on the elite few and kept them training through Covid. They’ll do well in this olympics but they have no one coming through when this cohort retire.

Has Leon calmed down a bit with his commentary style? My main memory of the last Olympics was watching the diving with slightly clenched buttocks as Leon cheerfully tore into any microscopic error with peak Simon Cowell style gusto.
