Starting a thread as it is only weeks away.

The Welsh cyclist who I saw win a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the raising of the Welsh flag will be there- Emma Finucaine, one of the fastest women in the world on a cycle.

Did anyone see the BBC interview with the men’s 200m relay swimming team? So much focus on Adam, who is a phenomenal swimmer, and so little focus on Duncan, who is also an absolutely phenomenal swimmer.

I’m 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 but am so fed up with Duncan 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 not receiving the attention his skills command.

Marshtit · 05/08/2024 10:49

absolutely same here @GradGirl

I’m pleased I’m not alone, it is sort of almost the Matthew effect isn’t it.

I know that DS doesn’t court the limelight, but how about focusing on him, his remarkable achievements/medal tally and his future plans for once in one of these team interviews.

Fizbosshoes · 05/08/2024 11:12

Molly Caudery is out of the pole vault which is really disappointing, she must be gutted.

Marshtit · 05/08/2024 11:13

Duncan Scott The 27-year-old from Alloa has overtaken Chris Hoy as Scotland's most decorated Olympian with eight medals in total. from the BBC website yesterday.
hope he gets a great response in Scotland!

Supergirl1958 · 05/08/2024 11:20

@Fizbosshoes what a shame, she passed on attempting 4.20 as well. I did hear that we aren’t great in our field event quality this Olympics. Sadly we never really seem to get more than one who hits the real heights during a non home Olympics. Steve Backley, Jonathan Edwards and subsequently Greg Rutherford seem to have been our more quality field athletes in the last 30-35 years but no one really above that. And by field athletes I mean those competing in a single discipline and sustaining that quality.

Edited

He almost talks himself down as much as the media does, he says it doesn't count as Hoy has more golds. I mean he's right re the golds, but he should really take more credit for his achievements. He's brilliant, and seems lovely.

Holly Bradshaw got a bronze in Tokyo I think, and Molly Caudery was one of the favourites I think. She was indoor world champ earlier this year

Sulusu · 05/08/2024 12:00

I thought racing started in the Velodrome this morning, but can't find any coverage on Discovery.

It's on later one.

Ah thanks no idea why I thought it was on now.

burblish · 05/08/2024 12:30

Very disappointing for Holly Bradshaw and Molly Caudery.

Women's beam final was quite bizarre - I've never seen so many of the gymnasts falling off the beam in a final. Well done Alice d'Amato, but I think Rebeca Andrade will deeply regret not taking a chance with a slightly more difficult routine.

Zou Jingyuan's parallel bars routine was amazing - 16.2 is a gargantuan score.

DuncinToffee · 05/08/2024 12:44

The commentators called that beam final wrong, they gave the Brazilian the gold and then had to backtrack

One of the best things about the Commonwealth Games is (or perhaps was) that Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland compete as separate teams.

Agree about Duncan Scott's ability.

Yes but I mean it’s never really sustained is it? It seems a shame

FadedRed · 05/08/2024 13:17

Lots of falling off/falling over going on in the gymnastics today, the women from the beam and the men on the high bars? Are they asking too much of these people with team all, individuals all-round and individual apparatus event one after another? All 3 gymnasts have fallen on dismount on the high bar so far.

Sulusu · 05/08/2024 13:32

Zonderlands 2012 Olympics high bar routine still seems the best to a layperson like me. I remember watching it with my jaw on the floor.

burblish · 05/08/2024 13:52

@Sulusu I have watched Zonderland's routine again on YouTube so many times over the years - what a crowd-pleaser it was! Changes to the points code since then means it wouldn't score anywhere near that now but, for me, the entertainment factor makes it my favourite high bar routine ever.

MrsAvocet · 05/08/2024 15:30

I think Kayak Cross may be my new favourite sport! It's completely bonkers but very entertaining.

Supergirl1958 · 05/08/2024 15:34

@MrsAvocet the roll underwater half way through it makes me smile!

I only saw a bit but it looks crazy and they are great

BestIsWest · 05/08/2024 15:54

Just been watching the Kayak cross with 87 year old DM who says she’d love to have a go! She went Oooh! every time the gates opened at the start.

Sulusu · 05/08/2024 16:09

Velodrome time at last!

Oblomov24 · 05/08/2024 16:19

Watching kayak. Is there 4 going at the same time (was outside at a massive screen with no volume).

BestIsWest · 05/08/2024 16:46

Yes, 4 at the same time.
