I see the bonus points for fastest lap will be dropped from next year - apparently no clear reason for the change has been given yet by the FIA.

I've just seen a graphic on Facebook about this from BBC Sport and the timing does seem to lend some weight to this decision being made.

Follow the time line here:
1 - the decision to scrap the bonus point for fastest lap (if you're in the top 10 drivers, or not awarding it at all if you're outside the top 10) is made following controversy involving Daniel Ricciardo.
2 - RB's Ricciardo took the bonus point away from title contender Lando Norris in Singapore.
3 - RB are the sister team of Red Bull, whose driver Max Verstappen is also fighting for the 2024 title.

There is something rotten in the state of Denmark! (sorry that's an old quote from Hamlet)

@LookItsMeAgain KMag in previous years has taken fastest lap twice doing the same. Perez has definitely taken a fastest lap by putting on softs in the last few laps, as have others. I don’t inherently see a problem with what DR did as it had been done many times before to deprive a rival team of a point.

What it did do is make it even more clear that VCARB take direction from RB. In fact DRs exit was controlled by RB not VCARB which I thought was so blatant. Yet no action despite this being against the rules.

Max on Sprint Pole!

Well that was a pretty exciting sprint race. Loved the action from the two Ferraris racing each other. The new surface on the track seems hard on tyres though. Hope it's as interesting a race tomorrow.

Brazilianadventure · 19/10/2024 19:59

Max is back.

I agree the race was great, but not good for the Mercs that struggled.

Carlos is keen to make the most of his last races with Ferrari.

Hopefully McLaren and Ferrari can qualify well and adjust the cars for the race.

Watched the qualy this morning as it was on a bit late for me last night.

The Red Bull looks the most stable on that new bumpy track surface IMO, I think Verstappen would have had pole if Russell hadn't had that nasty crash.

Sainz is having a great weekend, looks good for the race tonight. I really enjoyed the battles with him and Le Clerc yesterday, I hope Ferrarri lets them race each other again.

Both Mercs looked really unstable again, it can't be much fun to drive at all this weekend. No wonder both drivers look dejected in interviews. Those new upgrades seem to have made the rear end of the car very unstable.

MercedesLeftWheelNut · 20/10/2024 20:05

Was that Max pushing Lando off the track? Need to see the replay.

Brazilianadventure · 20/10/2024 20:06

Go Charles.

Hamilton 12th

Those Ferraris look good...

MercedesLeftWheelNut · 20/10/2024 20:07

Shit. Lewis.

RockaLock · 20/10/2024 20:09

Oh Lewis. We were just saying how well you were doing...

Brazilianadventure · 20/10/2024 20:15

Lewis is going to want to forget a lot of 2024.

Ferrari need to retire that car if they don't know what the fuel smell is. 😮

Brazilianadventure · 20/10/2024 21:32

My nerves are shredded.

Brazilianadventure · 20/10/2024 21:41

I know it’s good defending but Max really does push it to the limit. It’s a milder version of Brazil 2021.

Well done Ferrari a great 1-2.

I couldn't watch when Max and Lando were battling it out. I feel so disappointed that Lando got a 5 second penalty. Fantastic drives by Carlos and Charles.

RockaLock · 20/10/2024 21:43

F1 stewards are just the worst. So inconsistent.

5 sec penalty for Russell for forcing a driver off the track. No penalty for Max for doing the same, in fact they give the penalty to Lando instead. Ridiculous!

Sulusu · 20/10/2024 21:43

Good race by both Ferraris. Did nothing wrong, their strategy has been much better lately, and they move very close to Red Bull in constructors.

Fantastic race also by Lawson and Russell from the back of the grid. Either of those two would be my driver of the day.

Perez though, he might be bringing a lot of money into the team, they might come third in the constructors due to his poor performances lately.

MercedesLeftWheelNut · 20/10/2024 21:43

Some exciting racing there at the end. But I think the sport has a real problem when - as spectators - it's impossible to judge who will get a penalty and who won't, for what seems like the same behaviour.

CelesteCunningham · 20/10/2024 21:44

Well that was tremendous fun. Fuck me Max can drive that was incredible defending. Could hear him grinning on the radio.

I'm a big Ferrari fan and I've barely thought about their 1-2 all race 😂

Exactly.

OP posts:
Brazilianadventure · 20/10/2024 21:47

@Sulusu I agree. I still think the rumours Perez will be swapped out after Mexico could be right. If Lawson continues to drive well I would swap them.

OP posts:
CelesteCunningham · 20/10/2024 21:49

Given they were so penalty heavy today I don't think it was a surprise he got the penalty. Max is so smart as well, I wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional that that's how it went iykwim.

I was screaming at the screen for them to get Piastri to drop back another 5s, the move under braking looked dodgier to me but haven't seen a replay.

How on earth did Max keep him behind so long, Lando was visibly quicker. Incredible stuff I'm buzzing.

Well we can be pretty sure Verstappen won't get a penalty. Makes me sick
