Fun fact - Williams in 2025 will have the only driver line-up where both drivers do not have their appendix any more!

😄

Just make sure this doesn't make their cars underweight 😆

Oh for goodness sake 😁

I think he's just for slight 'effete posh English boy' vibes which grates on my Scottishness 🤣

Oh that's it! I'm also on the "George's a tit" side and I couldn't work out why, but he has that voice that carries with it that assumption that people will listen to him. Which I think is just a trait of posh English boys.

Merrow · 30/07/2024 12:40

I've just seen that Red Bull are making no changes after summer break - how boring.

But he isn't posh, one of the few drivers on the grid who doesn't come from big money. He did go to a good school but has a pretty normal middle class background.

Russell, Occon, Bottas, Hamilton aren't from wealthy or connected backgrounds (that I can remember). Most of the drivers do or they have heavy sponsorship backing like Zhou. They have families who gave up a lot to get their kids into racing, like Anthony Hamilton did.

One of the reasons Perez is staying is due to money. He has a lot of very wealthy people backing him.

WouldUSayImWorthy · 30/07/2024 13:49

I'm not saying he is though, I'm saying that's his vibe.

They must figure that losing the constructors will be less of a financial penalty than the loss of Perez' sponsorship and merch sales.

To be honest also they don't really have a slam dunk second option. I know CH is a big Ricciardo fan but I don't think he's shown any signs this season that he could jump into the RB and be competitive. Tsunoda has done better and arguably is more deserving of a shot but there's still been flashes of immaturity and hot headedness from him and I don't think RB would want to upset Max.

I'd really like to see Lawson get a shot but going straight into the RB would be a hell of an ask (although he coped really well with the AT last year) and for whatever reason Red Bull don't seem that committed to him.

Interesting to know so many of us feel the same about Russell but can’t quite work out why. Maybe it’s a lack of charisma? Or being a bit know all, like he knows better than everyone around him. No idea … but I am delighted to have found some fellow F1 fans in this corner of Mumsnet. Look forward to discussing the rest of a very interesting season with you all.

Rowgtfc72 · 30/07/2024 17:57

I've got to say I've got to the point I dislike George more than Max.
And I couldn't tell you why, he just sets my teeth on edge.

Exhaustedpenguin · 30/07/2024 19:03

I actually commented to my kids at the F1 this weekend about how few Russell fans there were. I mean, I know Merc is all about Hamilton, but I think I only saw a handful of 63 shirts. Far more Sargeant ones which always confuses me.

For a boy that doesn't come from a posh family, he doesn't really endear me with his choice of outfits - looking like he's always headed to Wimbledon in all whites or off to shoot grouse on some country pile.

WouldUSayImWorthy · 30/07/2024 19:29

Yeah somehow he just doesn't connect with people in the same way, I dunno, it's a shame for him really.

I do think he leans into taking the piss out of himself pretty well on the Merc F1 Instagram though, so it might land better with the younger crowd.

Lostworlds · 31/07/2024 06:36

I’m not a massive George fan either, I feel he comes off as entitled but I used to like him when he raced for Williams!

I am not particularly a fan of George but not sure I could ever dislike someone as much as I dislike Verstappen.

That's funny, I quite like Max. I don't think there's any pretence about him, he just wants to drive cars fast and go home to drive simulator cars fast.

I think he comes across as very arrogant and I hate the way he talks, or rather swears and rants, at his team. Bad attitude. Also can't take any pressure

WouldUSayImWorthy · 31/07/2024 08:52

I don't dislike Max either. He's arrogant with good reason and a fairly blunt person, but I get the sense there's no pretence, and that in itself is quite interesting given his global profile.

BearFacedCheek · 31/07/2024 22:03

I don’t think Horner has done any favours in cultivating or nurturing a good attitude from Verstappen. He comes across as a whiney, petulant spoilt kid. A bit like a male-version of Violet Beauregarde.

Lostworlds · 01/08/2024 08:56

I quite like Max, I think he is strong willed and speaks his mind. I can’t imagine Red Bull being a warm cosy atmosphere to work.
I think there’s also been many drivers throughout the years who have also been quite similar to him!

WouldUSayImWorthy · 01/08/2024 09:01

Definitely - I watched the Senna documentary and thought he was quite a prick!

Violet!

I've warmed to Max recently as I've seen quite a few instagrams with him and Penelope and he seems very kind and natural with her.

Also in George The Tits defence, I liked the George Russell looks like a man who ... last year and he did seem to take that pretty well.

Yes I think there is a generational thing in that we didn't hear the team radio in the past so we have no idea what previous greats were like on the radio when things weren't going their way.

I think away from the track stuff Max comes across really well - friendly with pretty much all of the other drivers, clearly very good with his partner's little girl (in that relaxed way that indicates it's genuine and not just for the cameras), sense of humour and doesn't take himself too seriously. I also love his complete lack of patience with the BS of modern F1, and particularly enjoyed him in Vegas last year.

goingdownfighting · 01/08/2024 10:43

I'm sorry but being nice on social media after you've been rude and arrogant the day before isn't a sign of a lovely person. It a sign that his very expensive social media people have had to do some damage limitation. It's all manipulation.

That radio betrayed the veneer of civility that he has to keep up. He has become very good at it. Especially when everything is going his way. When it isn't things are very different.

George is an annoying squirt who happens to be a very intelligent driver with very good instincts. And he needs to keep his top on.

Max always comes across to me as very petulant when he is in the car but pretty calm and measured out of it.

goingdownfighting · 01/08/2024 19:59

Red bull sporting director has left Red Bull to head up Audi.

Rowgtfc72 · 01/08/2024 20:40

@WouldUSayImWorthy agree about Senna. Absolutely agree he was a first class driver but never warmed to him as a person.

Who's next to go from Redbull then?
