@talawalawoo

Another Arsenal supporter here. Hope you have a great time today. We went to the Arsenal Spurs match this time last year and loved it.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 01/10/2023 16:06

Oh dear. Well, I seem to remember Chelsea lost their first WSL match last season so perhaps it is a good omen.

We had so many chances but couldn't score.

DuncinToffee · 01/10/2023 16:53

We lost as well. Disappointing first half, improved but couldn't get the draw.

Thankyou for the welcomes 😊

Hope you all had a great day. @MustTryHarderAndHarder we were at the Spurs match too. Today obviously wasn't meant to be.

@DuncinToffee maybe as @MustTryHarderAndHarder says the losses will be good omens moving forwards!

BellaAmorosa · 01/10/2023 20:29

Well, we were awful. So predictable, so lacking in intensity. Well done, Liverpool. Grrr.

Commiserations to all. Except Nettie. That was a great match and your team showed a lot of flair and determination. Garcia is a player I've admired for a while, she's just maturing now. Very good performance by both teams, great way to start the season.

Hi, talawalawoo!👋

talawalawoo · 01/10/2023 20:42

Hey @BellaAmorosa 👋👋

nettie434 · 01/10/2023 21:04

I thought the Villa Man Utd match was great too, so close and a real tussle. When Rachel Daly scored I'd thought that was it. I agree about Lucia Garcia. She and Williams often come to the rescue at the last minute. I love Rachel Williams. She clearly enjoys playing but says she will go back to being a plasterer when she retires. She's just on that age cusp where professional WSL players had to plan for jobs outside football when they gave up playing professionally. I suspect Geyse will make a big impact in the WSL too. Whoever does recruitment for the women's team are clearly better than those who do it for the men!

Liverpool did the same to Chelsea last season, as MustTryHarderAndHarder says, but it didn't harm Chelsea in the long run. It was good to read that so many people came The Emirates, even if the majority won't have been happy with the result. I think it's been hard for Arsenal having had so many injuries over the last few months. I'm sure once they are used to playing together, things will improve.

IronGwazi · 01/10/2023 22:46

Hi @talawalawoo ! I’m also new to this thread.

What an impressive attendance for Arsenal at the Emirates today - nowhere near as many at Stamford Bridge. It wasn’t announced but someone said it was around the 14k mark.

I saw that weird thread where a lot of women were dissing women’s football and saying the skills weren’t the same, and I thought “WTF?”. I started my love affair with football long ago, spent many seasons watching a men’s team (not Premier League), followed them up and down the country and still look for the results, but that doesn’t mean I can’t also like women’s football. I really enjoy the skills on display, I like the atmosphere, I like the connection with the players.

BellaAmorosa · 02/10/2023 09:32

Is the other thread the one in AIBU? Some interesting comments on there! Some great rebuttals made as well.

talawalawoo · 03/10/2023 08:57

Hi @IronGwazi 👋👋. It was a great attendance on Sunday, hopefully though we'll see a lot more of it going forward with the other clubs too certainly seems alot of appetite for it.

I think it was in AIBU @BellaAmorosa, it was a very strange thread not sure what the OP was hoping to gain from it tbh but agree there were some great rebuttals.

BellaAmorosa · 04/10/2023 12:33

My thoughts exactly!

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 06/10/2023 10:48

Nervous about tonight.

Man U seem to have made some very good signings.

Let's hope Russo will be fired up enough to score a hat trick!

IronGwazi · 06/10/2023 10:52

What do you Gooner's think about the contract extension for Jonas? I was a bit surprised.

BellaAmorosa · 06/10/2023 14:38

MustTryHarderandHarder
What you said, with bells on!

IronGwazi
It's interesting, isn't it. I see two issues - whether to extend his contract and when to announce it.

Given that the negotiations started in the summer, the club have awarded him the extension on the basis of last year rather than the shit-show of the start of this season. He had one more season on his original contract, this extension adds two. We know the club likes stability and they have just spent a lot of money in wages and a couple of large transfer fees to (almost) complete his squad so it would be mad to sack him now, as some have wanted. From their point of view they might as well extend, make it clear that they are backing him and not unsettle the players or the other coaching staff by holding a sword over the JE's head. And if he messes up, they can still sack him anyway!

The timing is odd but typical - they announced Arteta's contract extension when the men's team was doing really badly, too. I think that once they've made their decision, they just pick a date to announce it and stick to that schedule, come what may.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 06/10/2023 15:28

Yes, I was surprised about the timing, but as @BellaAmorosa said, I think that they just decide on an announcement date and stick to it.

I remember when we were season ticket holders for the men's games, there would often
be an email asking us to spend money the morning after a devastating defeat when we were in a bad mood.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 06/10/2023 21:31

Fair result in the end.

Relieved we didn't lose.

What a goal from Lacasse.

nettie434 · 06/10/2023 22:17

I thought it was a fair result in the end. Both Arsenal goals were worldies but overall I think both sides will acknowledge that they could each have made more of their chances. It will make the rest of the WSL matches this weekend very interesting.

talawalawoo · 06/10/2023 23:58

Agree, was a fair result but that last goal 😍.
Katie McCabe getting a yellow after about 2 mins on... I'm sure it was literally a couple of minutes she had been on the pitch! You could see the frustration kicking in with a few of them at that point

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 07/10/2023 09:39

We really need to work on our defence. It is noticeably weaker since Raphaelle left.

talawalawoo · 07/10/2023 09:53

Yep Agree @MustTryHarderAndHarder

DuncinToffee · 08/10/2023 13:20

How on earth was that time wasting Shock Shocking decision from the ref.

OP posts:
IronGwazi · 08/10/2023 14:40

I think it was time wasting, but very harsh when maybe a verbal warning would have been better. Manchester City were the better team today! Only when they were down to 8 players (Alana Kennedy temporarily off the pitch) were Chelsea able to score …. 🤔

Version12 · 08/10/2023 15:26

Shocking performance from the ref.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 08/10/2023 15:29

Yes, very harsh.

Man City did so well to hang on.

A draw was the best result for us even though I wanted City to win as they had been treated so badly.

BellaAmorosa · 08/10/2023 17:20

Thank goodness for Cloe Lacasse! We don't quite look like Arsenal yet, but it was a much better performance than last Sunday. On the overall balance of play and chances made, I agree with you that a draw was a fair result, nettie, but it really grates with me that we literally gave you at least one goal.

I will say that ManU have recruited well. Might seem like an odd thing for an Arsenal fan to say but I don't think you will miss Alessia Russo, great though she is. The 3Gs - Geyse, Garcia and Galton - plus Malard et al will do the business for you. The standard across the WSL has gone up a level again.

duncintoffee
So sorry about today - rotten luck to have a penalty saved and a goal ruled out. Hannah Bennison seems like she is more confident and mature this season. I may have mentioned that Veje used to play for Arsenal. I really liked her but she only stayed a season, I think. We were told it was homesickness, or failure to settle, which I didn't quite buy - I think it was something personal, not settling. Or fitness issues, maybe? She never seemed to last a whole game. But she is a really good player, seems a lot fitter now and is doing really well at Everton, from what I've seen.

Chelsea got lucky with Man City having 2 players sent off, but I'm grateful for the result. City are one of those teams for whom going down to ten players doesn't really change anything. They're very well suited to digging in.
And Leicester City top the WSL! At least unless Liverpool beat Aston Villa by a huge margin...
