Football fans join in to share the joy, the heartache and VAR frustration ⚽

The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.

given the number of matches that are played in England, and the bitching and whining from managers and players, I'm surprised replays are still a thing. We don't have them here, it's 30 minutes extra time and penalties.

The league cup draws go straight to penalties I think, they don't bother with the 30 mins.

DuncinToffee · 06/01/2024 17:20

I am disappointed that the games chosen for tv are mainly PL teams

Yes, unfortunately that is what people want to watch. It is just a shame that so many PL teams drew other PL teams this time round.

nettie434 · 07/01/2024 11:40

I think it's more complicated because the FA Cup and League Cup have different rules. There are replays in the 4th & 5th round of the FA Cup, not sure about the semis.

Traditionally the real advantage of replays was for lower league clubs who managed to get a replay so got two lots of ticket receipts. It could be a game changer financially.

TheSleepingGiant · 07/01/2024 12:20

Money aside, replays are a tradition, same as Boxing Day matches, and it will be a sad day when they do away with them. Perhaps the FA could do away with the "tradition" of parachute payments and distribute that large amount of money to Leagues 1 and 2 instead Hmm

Good plan!

You must have been pleased with the Sheffield Wednesday result @Brefugee. What about saving two penalties too?

Brefugee · 07/01/2024 13:19

still grinning over that win. That's a bit of a boost, so hopefully we can keep our form in the league and avoid relegation.

In the German cup (we only have one, there is another cup for lower leagues) any team from 3rd division or below who draws a team from the 1st or 2nd division gets a home match. There is a complicated arrangement of getting teams from the much lower divisions into the draw involving regional league winners. All teams are involved from round 1. Whenever Gladbach have got a non-league side there has been a lot of social media banter, and in one year the team "kidnapped" our captain when they arrived and he was ransomed with a lot of beer (so we basically donated their beer receipts) which was sold in the ground.

In the corona years we drew a different non league side (who are now 3rd division) who then sold ghost "tickets" and pretty much everyone i know bought some (you could buy one, or multiples of 11). It was basically a raffle and we won an 8 litre barrel of beer which we then donated to our village football team.

Was disappointed that Cardiff brought so few fans with them to Sheffield.

DuncinToffee · 07/01/2024 13:41

Our local national league team is playing today. I don't really follow them as we have no links to the town or club but DS has a few mates who do and they bumped into to the manager in a pub a while back who had a long chat with them. He is a Dyche fan according to DS Smile

Could see that happening since the first half. Dominate, dominate, dominate, and then concede...

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 07/01/2024 19:04

I wanted arsenal to win that one and it was so frustrating how wasteful they were in front of goal!

If he had played Nketia instead of Havertz we would have scored at least one in the first half.

user1471453601 · 07/01/2024 23:16

As a long term lfc supporter, I told my daughter at half time that arsenal would either score very soon after half time, otherwise Liverpool would win.

It's what the team does. They run the legs off the opposition then score in the last 15. Look at the stats.

burblish · 08/01/2024 12:34

The lack of consistency in how the rules are applied this season continues to baffle me. Last night, Odegaard and Jorginho both constantly moaned to the ref and showed dissent - Jorginho was only spoken to about it (and that, too, only once) and nothing was said at all to Odegaard, but Elliot complained once and was immediately booked for doing so? Make it make sense!

it's like most of the country has gone into shock

burblish · 09/01/2024 16:17

I’m pleased to see sanity has prevailed with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s red card v Crystal Palace having been overturned by the FA on appeal.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2024 16:33

Common sense but I was still doubtful it would happen.

I see that a number of players want to leave the Saudi league Confused

Incredible win for Man City v Newcastle.
That has to be the game of the season- exhausting to watch and unbelievable goals!

DuncinToffee · 13/01/2024 19:47

Kevin de Bruyne just oozes class

I’m in the car on the way home from the game. I’m exhausted and heartbroken. Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory once again. Fuck me this season is too much. Our injury crisis has not let up all season. 12 players out STILL. Only one of our summer signings available today and that’s an 18 year old Lewis Hall who with the best will in the world isn’t going to change games. There needs to be very very serious questions asked of our medical team. Harvey Barnes hurt his toe 5 months ago 🤷🏼‍♀️ Callum Wilson played 30 minutes against Forest and now is absolutely crocked. Joelinton out AGAIN for 6 weeks. Two dislocated shoulders - well three of you couldn’t the second time murphy’s popped out on the pitch after inexplicably playing the next game rather than having surgery first time round. Elliot Anderson hurt his back in September and never been heard from again. We have no one. No plan B. Nothing. Plan B, C and D has been decimated. Theres only so much we can do 😒

Gutted tonight. Absolutely gutted.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 13/01/2024 20:12

Having said that, Isak’s and Gordon’s goals were sublime.

Tarkan · 13/01/2024 20:23

I really feel for you. It's so disheartening when injury lists just keep getting longer.

I didn't make it to Gayfield to watch Arbroath today as I had issues with a heart condition overnight and I didn't want to risk it kicking off again at the match. We got 1 point but bottom of the table again. We signed 3 new guys so we could have more than 3 guys on the bench and according to DH we've had more injuries from that match. We even had to sign an extra back up goalie on an emergency loan because Gaston injured himself in training. At least Ali Adams got to start in goal. He got the SPFL goal of the month for that stunner at the end of last year too.

Really feel for you on the injury front - Gladbach are in a similar position with zero money to cover new signings.

Those two goals though - really worth watching a few times.

Didn't expect Sheffield Wednesday to win away against Southampton, but 4-0 is atrocious, even by their low standards.

Brefugee · 13/01/2024 20:44

hope you're ok, @Tarkan

Tarkan · 13/01/2024 20:51

Thanks @Brefugee

Had a heart rate of over 165 (I couldn't always check but I know it can go over 200 during an attack) for must have been around 10 hours or so overnight. I'm feeling rather sore from it, so was safer for me to rest up today. They don't normally last more than a few minutes so calling the doc this week as I shouldn't be having an attack this bad when I'm on meds for it. Sad It's DH's birthday today too so I felt really bad that I couldn't go along but it was the safest option.
