Football fans join in to share the joy, the heartache and VAR frustration ⚽

The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.

I've been admiring it, ideal coat for the freezing winter evening kick-offs!

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 03/12/2023 16:10

Sunderland v Newcastle is mouth watering. Disappointing not to be at home as the police will significantly limit the amount of away fans that get to the game but I cant wait! It’s been a long time…

Just seen it. Apparently it cost £2k!

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 03/12/2023 17:23

Someone just said this on the bbc website:

Ed: The Spurs away kit colour reminds me of when I was a child and mixed all the paints together. It came out as revolting as that.

Oblomov23 · 03/12/2023 17:24

Man City v spurs, we are 2-1 down at HT. I'll take that. Fear it might be 7-2 final score. Few can compete with city, abc we certainly can't with 11 injuries, and as per usual no depth of squad.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 03/12/2023 18:10

Not doing too badly so far @Oblomov23!

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 03/12/2023 18:10

Ummm. Sorry about that.

Oblomov23 · 03/12/2023 18:29

3-3. Ha ha. Grin
Love it. Haarland furious, lost his head. Love it.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 03/12/2023 18:31

Haaland looked like a fucking furious Viking as he stalked off down the tunnel. Tbf the ref had a shocker there blowing the whistle when City were clean through on goal. Spurs deserved something out the game though. Keeps it nice and competitive at the top!

burblish · 03/12/2023 18:38

What a day of football in the Prem - can’t wait for MOTD2 tonight! 😄 Well done especially to Spurs, who managed a deserved draw at the Etihad despite both your injury list and that truly appalling away kit!

nettie434 · 03/12/2023 19:11

I think Spurs deserved a draw. Arsenal fans will be pleased with the result from a points perspective. Agree with Eddie that it's better from a competitive point of view.

TheSleepingGiant · 03/12/2023 21:20

Outstanding 2nd half from Spurs earlier, tough 1st half but the changes after half time turned the game. Fully deserved the point especially with such a depleted squad. Solid performances from Porro, Vic, Kulu, Son and Johnson. Get Romero back next week in time to face the Hammers.

Well done to Eastleigh for knocking Reading out of the FA Cup earlier, shame they didn't get one of the big boys next round though.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 03/12/2023 21:34

Sounds like City were on the wrong side of this week's obligatory dreadful refereeing decision...

Brefugee · 04/12/2023 07:13

right up until that decision i thought the ref had a good match.
Can totally understand Haaland's reaction - but he has to learn to calm the F down and take it on the chin.

DuncinToffee · 04/12/2023 09:07

Haaland was lucky not to get carded for that reaction

OP posts:
Brefugee · 04/12/2023 09:51

i'm surprised the Ref ignored it, tbh. I would have given him at least a yellow.

But the ref must have realised right away he'd made a duff decision and decided to let it go?

Yes, I think that that was what happened.

I actually like that referee but they are under so much pressure and have to make split second decisions.

I don't know the rules well enough, but if he had let play go on and Greelish had been off side or had not scored, I don't think that he would have been able to then award the free kick.

Brefugee · 04/12/2023 10:33

once you play the advantage, though, if they don't score then the free kick is a done deal because advantage is the trade off for not getting the free kick.

In this case it was a wrong decision, and tbh Haaland overreacted and he needs to work on that. Spurs clearly went up a gear in the 2nd half and as a neutral i felt that was the best result. Having said that, i do like to watch Grealish and would have liked to see him get another goal.

Part of their training must include how to take setbacks and wrong decisions gracefully.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 04/12/2023 11:07

@Brefugee Yes, Haaland has overreacted like that before but I think that he gets away with it as he come across as a gentle giant perhaps because his hair makes him look feminine. I don't know, but I think that if Kyle Walker had reacted like that then he would have been carded because he just comes over as aggressive.

Yes, I think that it was a fair result. Spurs seemed to go in to kamikaze mode in the second half.

Brefugee · 04/12/2023 12:52

i really want refs to take a much harsher stance - so many players touching them! I read at the weekend that they're going to trial only the captain being allowed to approach the ref, unless summoned. That may help.

But really, they all need lessons in not overreacting, and accepting that sometimes refs make mistakes too.

Yes, the touching really needs to stop. I thought that they had brought it in already that only the captain can approach the referee at the beginning of this season, but it isn't being enforced.

I know that Haaland overreacted, but to be fair, it was such a big mistake which cost them the game in virtually the last minute of the game that I don't really blame him. Most other decisions aren't that clear cut but that one was so I think that most people would have been as upset as he was.

Brefugee · 04/12/2023 14:55

I would expect a player to be upset in that moment - and maybe to tweet about it afterwards, as Haaland has done. But i do expect them to be professional, as Guadiola was, and accept that sometimes an absolutely shit decision goes against you.

after all, rugby players do it all the time.

A few seasons ago in the Bundesliga it was anounced that any dissent to the ref would be a yellow. In the first match one of our players was sent off after saying something to the ref after getting a (soft) yellow. And off he went. And the very next match, against us, a Bayern player did the same thing - and no card. And then it was quietly dropped... Refereeing in football needs an overhaul. Not least around surrounding/talking to the ref, and the handball (in the penalty area in particular) law.

Tarkan · 04/12/2023 15:12

New manager for Arbroath, Jim McIntyre. Previous stats don't look the best but we'll just wait and see. I'll be back at Gayfield on Saturday for the first time in ages as we've been away a lot and I’m sure I was ill for the last home match too.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 04/12/2023 16:23

I have seen a few yellow cards dished out for dissent in the PL this season but as you say, it isn't consistent. Same for time wasting, although players seem to have stopped doing that now.
