Football fans join in to share the joy, the heartache and VAR frustration ⚽

The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.

It was a great goal. That's two days running for great goals after we had Michael Olise's yesterday.

It must be so frustrating @DuncinToffee when Everton were quite safely mid table before the points deduction. I see Andy Burnham has written a letter of complaint about the process. I don't think the other clubs think it is fair either.

Oblomov23 · 26/11/2023 22:02

Oh what a beauty. We were watching it live. Mouths open. Rare for me to be speechless. GrinWink

oviedo · 27/11/2023 13:18

Mainoo- what a fantastic prospect for England! Hope he doesn't switch to Ghana but he's had junior representation so fingers crossed!

nettie434 · 27/11/2023 16:47

Agree that we must hope Mainoo continues to choose England, Oviedo. He seems to have the sort of attitude that Southgate likes so I am optimistic that he will be selected. When Man Utd won the Youth F A cup a couple of years ago, he was so important in the team. He got injured in the summer which was bad luck for him as he was doing well

Looks like Wolves will borrow our PL Corrupt signs soon

Via Sam Matterface

Officials confirm to Gary O’Neil…

- Ream should have been sent off.
- First fulham pen shouldn’t have been given.
- Vinicius should have been sent off. Despite suggesting initially the headbutt wasn’t aggressive enough !!!! And then changing their mind!

They've had it even worse than us...

Brefugee · 28/11/2023 07:43

Everton will be fine i think, but low in the table compared to where they should be. Frankly? i think the FA (or is it the PL?) needs to take a good long hard look at itself and start playing fair.

Who have had points deductions? Everton, Boro (and Leicester?) and who are sitting pretty with all the expensive lawyers that their corrupt owners (nothing against the clubs/fans but the owners are the absolute dreck)? It makes me really cross.

I can see Wednesday getting a points deduction the way our owner is behaving. (good luck with that, we'll be on minus points)

TBH as a fan, i can't be doing with all that shenanegins. I have always said that I support my team/club and everything else is just meh. So PL or National League, I'll be there week in, week out. (but i reserve the right to moan about the corruption and how the PL is sucking all the resources out of English football)

I really think that it is incompetence, but it is also a very difficult job with so many rules around each issue. Add in the stupidity of Clear and Obvious which is so subjective that I am not surprised that there are so many mistakes. I really think that Clear and Obvious should go. The referee might have been looking in the other direction, so how can VAR possibly decide if they can overturn his decision?

I wonder how many of the managers (including Arteta) would be able to do the job?

Also, would Gary O'Neil be complaining if the decisions had been in his favour?

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 28/11/2023 22:15

Well at the beginning of the night there is no way I thought I would be this FURIOUS about a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes.

We were absolutely robbed.

Jermaine Jenas has just described the decision to give the penalty as one of the worst decisions in football in a long long time.

AndNobbyDancing · 28/11/2023 22:22

We are furious and we don't even support Newcastle. Watching with our French friends and they thought it was a shocking decision.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 28/11/2023 22:34

In real time I thought ‘ ah shit, that’s handball’. Then it took ages to show a replay. But when they did as the ref was looking at the VAR monitor I was like ‘absolutely no way will he give that, it came off his chest and his arm is done’. And then inexplicably he pointed to the spot. I thought he’d been good until then. But I just can not understand that decision.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 28/11/2023 22:37

And 8 mins of extra time?! In a half with one minor injury and no Newcastle subs. Where the hell did that come from?!

Fume aside. I am so proud of those lads. Livramento, Miley, Gordon and Pope all outstanding. Every single one of them defended like their life depended on it.

I could only see the Dortmund match. Where a penalty was awarded that defies belief (luckily it was saved)

nettie434 · 29/11/2023 09:14

Surely FIFA have to realise that decisions like these really undermine confidence in officials' decision making? Marcinak refereed the World Cup in Qatar so it's not like he was a part time referee unused to the elite game.

A while ago I used to think Champions League matches were less controversial than PL games but the way they define 'handball' now means that it's rare to have a match without a contentious decision.

AndNobbyDancing · 29/11/2023 09:15

nettie it makes me think that big betting syndicates are pulling the strings.

burblish · 29/11/2023 11:01

Says it all that UEFA have stood down the VAR official from the Newcastle game from VAR duties in tonight’s Real Sociedad v RB Salzburg Champions League game. Appalling handball decision.

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2023 11:11

It's all about the money and has been for decades, it's just getting more obvious with VAR and the likes.

OP posts:
MustTryHarderAndHarder · 29/11/2023 12:30

The rule should be that if the ball hits another part of the player's body before it hits the arm or hand then it cannot be a handball.

Apparently the UEFA board recommended that recently but it was not taken up by whoever makes the rules.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 29/11/2023 13:18

Finally seen the video, and despite my schadenfreude, that's an appalling decision!

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 29/11/2023 15:23

I’m still utterly baffled as to how it was given. It’s the players I feel for, they left it all out on the pitch, we were unable to make any subs due to our injury situation and every one of them gave everything they had to defend that lead for almost 100 minutes of football. But. We move. I hope Dortmund show them who is boss next month and that we get a result against Milan. Dumping PSG out of UCL would be even more sweet after last night.

Onwards to Saturday in the meantime where I hope we take our anger out on Man U.

God I hope we get some injury returnees soon though. This just isn’t workable long term. We re already fielding benches of GK’s and children who have never played senior football before as well as giving the chance of a lifetime to a 17 year old (who has grabbed it and ran tbf). I don’t know how much more we can take!

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2023 16:40

That is quite the rant Eddie Grin And one that most of us could have made about decisions against our teams.

Injuries are on the increase. And not many clubs have a replacement bench. I think Newcastle's proposed loans from Saudi teams has been approved.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 29/11/2023 17:45

What? So Newcastle will get CRonaldo?

oviedo · 29/11/2023 19:43

Fantastic match tonight in Istanbul

oviedo · 29/11/2023 19:46

So angry about last night's penalty. Hope PSG get hammered by Dortmund. Horrible team.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 29/11/2023 19:52

As if we’d want an old hasbeen like CRonaldo 😂😂

Dont fall for the media bullshit, that PL vote was absolutely aimed at us 🙄 (despite the likes of Watford etc doing business with associated clubs for years and it not being an issue, or Frank Lampard’s convoluted loan via NYC FC to Man City causing little issue) but we have very little interest in using the Saudi Pro League as a feeder for Newcastle.

Several things, the Saudi’s are trying to grow their league and actively promote it as a place to play and watch football. Hardly going to achieve that if they send all their ‘names’ our way. With the exception of perhaps Reuben Neves I can’t think of a single player we’d even be remotely interested in. Newcastle are about young versatile players not washed up players chasing the last big pay day. And finally, despite what the media are keen to suggest, the owners have demonstrated a real keenness to not call their ownership into question, remain within the boundaries of FFP and generally play by the book. The ONLY business we have done with Saudi thus far was selling Allan Saint Maximan for 23ish million, a fee which was widely acknowledged to be very fair and probably a bit under market value.

And of course it isn’t just us. The likes of Everton, City, Forest and Chelsea had just as much to lose if not more than us with that vote. But look at the media and it would appear it’s only us who have links with other clubs 🤦🏼‍♀️
