Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Tamberi reminds me of a more slightly built Graziano from Strictly.

I just think he seems so much fun . I like that on discovery you can just watch whole events , hopefully they will have a feed for the men’s pole vault .

I love watching high-jump, I'm in awe of how they do it. It's great that they're sharing the gold.

I was just reading up about Dick Fosbury, who invented the 'Fosbury Flop' - just about every high-jumper uses it now, but when he started out, he could barely clear 5 feet with the straddle technique, which required jumpers to land on their feet. He was ridiculed at first for his new jumping style but five years later, he won an Olympic gold with a jump of over 7 feet - 2.24m. Amazing.

I was sceptical about these Olympics going ahead but I’m a convert. Been watching track and field today and it’s just fabulous. So much talent and emotion and drama. Just what we all need as a distraction right now

I didnt like the questioning.

He knows he fucked up, try a sympathise with him.

He gets disqualified quite a lot . Italy are having a great year in general .

It's not the first time he's done it.
Of course the interviewer needs to ask him about it! It was embarrassing and he's representing Team GB.

I'm not keen on these post-race interviews. What do they add, exactly? Athletes are often puffed out and can barely speak, let alone articulate anything meaningful.
