OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

The skateboard gold medalist is younger than my dog!

Floralnomad · 28/07/2021 09:11

I’m watching sailing now which is way more interesting than I thought it would be . The diving was very disappointing.

Your dog is probably bronze medal standard judging by the skateboarding I saw earlier in the week!

mindthegapyear · 28/07/2021 09:29

@AndthreeTomsaredancing

When is the mixed tri?

I'm watching Handball, the commentary is dire but it's an exciting game.

Agree Valencia

Thanks for all the horse info and links, I've learnt a lot.

11:30pm on Fri night uk time or 7:30 am Japan time on Saturday morning.

Love the dressage info - very interesting!

GrouchyKiwi · 28/07/2021 09:54

We've really enjoyed watching the Rowing medal races this morning. So exciting!

Bryonyshcmyony · 28/07/2021 10:21

Carl Hester about to start his dressage test

Bryonyshcmyony · 28/07/2021 10:32

85.886%!

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2021 10:40

Seeing how much the gold medal meant for the Fiji rugby 7 team is what the Olympics is all about.

Papergirl1968 · 28/07/2021 10:53

Those interested in horses at the Olympics ought to read Jilly Cooper’s Riders. It’s rather dated now and more about show jumping than dressage IIRC, but it’s still wonderful. And will introduce you to the legendary Rupert Campbell Black! Grin

Bryonyshcmyony · 28/07/2021 10:55

Sorry that mark was for artistic interpretation

81.8 and 1st after 7 gone

GrouchyKiwi · 28/07/2021 10:56

So pleased for Fiji. Proud of my boys, but I'm always happy when Fiji beats us.

PurpleDaisies · 28/07/2021 10:59

The sevens was an awesome competition again. So pleased for Fiji.

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2021 11:05

Dressage is not for me, I am watching the canoeing now on RB

Wantingtogetitright · 28/07/2021 11:07

The dressage is just unbelievable. That they can teach a horse to move in those ways.

Just reading about a couple who are raising money by trying every Olympic sport over 17 days - including things like marathon, and 10m-diving! Very impressive.

And it really shows you how amazing the Olympians are, all of them, to be able to do any of these sports at such a level.

I've recently started watching posts by various gyms that facebook decides to show me (and the more I watch them, the more it shows!) of young gymnasts at early stages of their training, and it's fascinating seeing how they learn to do the various skills. It looks so overwhelming when you see the Olympic routines and skills, and always made me wonder how they learn to do something like that from scratch. All the foam shapes and min bars/beams and so on that help them do a single step of one of the moves, really interesting.

The BBC app headline is in a funny order though: "Team GB bid for gold in men's gymnastics and dressage", when really the story is about the dressage. Lovely for the men to get into the gymnastics all-around final, but they are in no way in contention for medals! Whereas it is a very likely gold medal in the dressage.

SCMocha · 28/07/2021 12:48

not gold, sorry, bronze

Newbornandupwards · 28/07/2021 12:58

Charlotte du Jardin wow!!!!

Iknowthiswillendbutwhen · 28/07/2021 13:09

A brilliant performance from Charlotte and Pumpkin! Wow she is so steady and professional. I really admire and like her.

Any idea how I can watch BMX finals from early this morning? Can’t seem to see it on any of the iplayer catch ups.

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2021 15:21

You haven't missed anything, BMX starts tomorrow Smile

Today were the road time trials.

Ah lovely thanks! I set it up to record this morning and it had the time trials and couldn’t work out why. Cheers
Mogloveseggs · 28/07/2021 18:35

Just catching up. I have no knowledge of dressage but that was amazing!
