To be supporting England...from Scotland

Just that really.

I don't get all the hatred. It's football. They are our neighbours. They are an underdog. They've played well. My mates in England deserve a bit of joy.

Not quite sure why it's ok to be so openly anti-English.

Thank you Smile

My Scottish BIL and his Scottish mum are supporting England too.

ChelleDawg2020 · 11/07/2018 14:45

YANBU. Never understood the hatred shown by the rest of the UK to the English. Rivalry I understand, but not the open hostility. It's bizarre, the English don't have the same animosity towards the Scots, Welsh or Northern Irish, and taxpayers get a better deal in those countries than the English do in England.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 11/07/2018 14:45

I think this has been said a few times. Not supporting England is not the same as being anti English.

If you support England that's great.

Mrsfs · 11/07/2018 14:49

I am supporting England too, I am Scottish but I am so happy for the team, they have played so well and deserve it. My husband is English though so maybe he softened me a bit lol

To be honest though, if a team does well, plays well, I don't care where they are from, I will wish them all the best!

Winter7 · 11/07/2018 14:53

I'm afraid in my experience, it feels like more of a specific anti-english thing than just not supporting England.

I am Scottish supporting England.

I have absolutely no English heritage, Scottish/Irish roots but have supported England since I was old enough to see that as far as football goes, Scotland were/are shite 😁

My Dad almost disowned me when I asked for a full strip one christmas when I was 10 (I got it though!) haha

Looklikewemadeit · 11/07/2018 14:54

I was shown such hatred in Scotland for having an English accent (I’m welsh) so it’s refreshing to hear! Yanbu

ConciseandNice · 11/07/2018 14:55

I’m Scottish and very excited. Come on England!!!!!

Atalune · 11/07/2018 14:56

Hosting a World Cup party this eve with my English family as a proud supporter despite being Scottish!

Come on England!

thor86 · 11/07/2018 14:59

You are not being unreasonable, but would be if you insisted other Scottish people should be doing the same

Winter7 · 11/07/2018 15:00

Sorry to hear that madeit :( I don't experience an anti-english feeling in any of my groups other than politics and football.

I understand the complex political issues (Not opening up a political debate) but the footie is about a game, and ordinary folk supporting their team. Hoping to do Well and having a reason to celebrate.

How can not supporting England be the same as hating the English or anti English?

I certainly don’t hate the English or anti English but my team is Scotland who aren’t in the finals (again) so I am not supporting anyone

Looklikewemadeit · 11/07/2018 15:11

Winter - I met some wonderful people in Scotland and am married to a Scot - it was only from strangers that I got comments and rudeness...enjoy the game tonight Smile

gryffen · 11/07/2018 15:24

Nah as I can't support football at all as it's a mugs game and overpaid drama queens getting millions for kicking a ball around a field for 90 mins.

I live in Glasgow so football = waste of time/sectarian abuse etc.

No hate of England just can't stand football.

psychomath · 11/07/2018 15:25

Thank you Smile I don't think there's any kind of obligation for the other countries in the union and/or Ireland to support England - they are separate countries, after all, even if we do have loads in common. But I find it really heartwarming when people whose own countries' teams have been knocked out or weren't in the competition support England - it's almost like their support means more because it's objective and not based on random nationalism, like mine (mostly) is.

I don't remember ever encountering any anti-English sentiment in Scotland, although most times when I visited I was a child so might not have picked up on it. I haven't encountered much anti-Scottish feeling IRL either, to be fair - mostly on here, and once on a bus when a random woman sat down next to me and immediately launched into a rant, apropos of nothing at all, about how the bloody Scots had forced Daylight Savings Time on us ConfusedGrin

TippyHaha · 11/07/2018 15:29

Welsh, living in Scotland. Will be supporting England tonight as are the majority of my Scottish friends.

Absolutely agree that not supporting England is not the same as being anti-English.

henpeckedinchief · 11/07/2018 15:32

YANBU. I'm Scottish and me, DH, both our families and most people I know are supporting England.

It does get a bit hard to swallow when you see the truly sickening displays that happen after some matches from some fans. It sours the whole thing for the many who would never behave that way. But in general I agree with you!

CrispsAndDip · 11/07/2018 15:32

Born and bred in Wales.

I shall be supporting England as always (in the football, not the rugby sorry!)

Semster · 11/07/2018 15:33

I'm in Maine and I've seen three England T-shirts so far today, and it's only 10.30am.

To my slight embarrassment my England supporting son only brought a Roma t-shirt with him on holiday.

Plannergirl9 · 11/07/2018 15:38

I'm Scottish and think it would be lovely if they win tonight and even the world cup. Happy to hear less about 1966 and more about 2018.

However, I do hope that the behavior of some english based fans is much better than Saturday. Vandalising an ambulance and trashing an Ikea is disgusting. I am so happy (and admittedly surprised) how well fans in Russia - from every country has behaved which makes some fans behavior on Saturday much worse.

Hopefully that won't happen again when England winsFootball

Battytwatty · 11/07/2018 15:46

This is a lovely thread compared to the horrible anti English one the other day! In fact, after reading that one I'd decided I was never going to step foot in Scotland again and that's always been one of my favourite countries to visit. The English hatred was fucking disgusting.

imdunkelnistgutmunkeln · 11/07/2018 15:51

What a nice thread Smile

My in laws in Germany are all supporting England (possibly because their son lives in London and is married to me!). Funny thing is, although the media here go on about England's rivalry with Germany, its just not that much of a thing in Germany - they consider the Netherlands as their big 'rival'. Friends told us that when England were in the penalty shoot out last week, the crowd in Hamburg were shouting for England.

MidnightAura · 11/07/2018 15:51

Scottish but not supporting England. Not anti English, I just don’t care about football.
If Scotland were in the World Cup I wouldn’t be interested either.

Winter7 · 11/07/2018 15:53

Sorry, I should clarify that I think it's absolutely fine not to support any team, or not England. It's the 'anyone but England' 'they must not win' attitude I don't understand. And, of course, it is not everyone. However, it is an attitude fairly widely seen by me, particularly on social media. More about specifically not wanting England to win, as opposed to not supporting the team.
