To be supporting England...from Scotland

Just that really.

I don't get all the hatred. It's football. They are our neighbours. They are an underdog. They've played well. My mates in England deserve a bit of joy.

Not quite sure why it's ok to be so openly anti-English.

Any older MNers remember Argentina 78? The Scottish team made it to Argentina and it seemed that everyone was supporting them (in England as well as Scotland I mean). I was a teenager and we were all supporting Scotland, including buying that awful single 'Ally's Tartan Army' Grin

Winter7 · 11/07/2018 16:00

Ha, brilliant! I would only have been 5 then but know the single of which you talk!

The way I see it, the Scots (yes, I’m one) are chippy about the English

The English barely notice, they’re too busy being chippy about the Germans

.... and the Germans barely notice, they’re much more focused on the big fish like the Dutch as a pp pointed out

I find the Scottish attitude really
Embarrassing to be honest.... if Scotland ever got into the World Cup, do you think England would be rooting for them? Totally! Of course they would!!

It’s like a footie food chain.

Perfectly1mperfect · 11/07/2018 16:06

It's the 'anyone but England' 'they must not win' attitude I don't understand.

I have heard a few people with this attitude in the last week or so. They are unpleasant people in general though. They don't support anyone else, they dont even like football, but they want England to lose. To actually want another group of people to fail says a lot about them.

thor86 · 11/07/2018 16:11

A lot of the Anyone But England thing is really "please can the annoying media frenzy end as soon as possible." For most people it's not really against England or the English.

oncloud99 · 11/07/2018 16:13

I'm not Scottish, I'm not English I'm not Irish but I am welsh and I am supporting England all the way have been since the World Cup started can't wait for the game tonight. Gonna be a good one

Winter7 · 11/07/2018 16:14

I think it will be a good one too. I've been watching as much as I can and it has been an exciting World Cup

I heard 3 mentions of 1966 between 6 and 6.10am this morning

When I put the TV on this morning heard "it's coming home" twice in the first 10 seconds, on a non sport related show

SangriaInTheSun · 11/07/2018 16:28

I’m Scottish and am absolutely rooting for England to win. I hate the ‘Anyone. It England’ mentality up here. And it is here. Everywhere.

However, I do hope that the behavior of some english based fans is much better than Saturday. Vandalising an ambulance and trashing an Ikea is disgusting

As a matter of fact, the person who destroyed the ambulance car was Scottish according to our local paper (she lives just down the road from me)

Plannergirl9 · 11/07/2018 16:43

@SangriaInTheSun I know she was (hence English based not english).

BeyondSea · 11/07/2018 16:45

I'm Welsh and am not bothered either way, but my English DH loves football and is dead excited, so I've spent the afternoon making England flags out of card as a surprise for when he gets home Grin

chrysalis7 · 11/07/2018 16:51

Thank you OP ... I also know a number of people who are not English/not from England who are cheering England on. Smile

chrysalis7 · 11/07/2018 16:53

Remember this @Winter7 Grin

HopeMumsnet · 11/07/2018 17:04

Hello there,
We've had some requests from non football fan (of which there are a fair few, it turns out) asking that this be moved to the World Cup board, so that's what we have done. Hope you all enjoy your parties tonight, wherever you are from!

Ginger1982 · 11/07/2018 17:08

I'm Scottish and don't really care who wins (but i will watch!) I wouldn't say it was anti English not to support them, more anti English media, especially some commentators.

But I'm not convinced England would support us if the boot was on the other foot so to speak!

JoeElliotsMullet · 11/07/2018 17:09

We're English and we live in Scotland. I've not really encountered any rabid anti-England feeling; it seems to be a bit of a non-event up here. I think people will watch because it's a World Cup match rather than because it's England.

On a slightly related note, has anyone read the bit of Pottermore in which JK Rowling explains why all British wizards support Scottish rugby?

Winter7 · 11/07/2018 17:14

Chrysalis....I do not! Hilarious!

I’m Scottish living in England and of course I’m supporting England. I’m no football fan but even I’m getting excited. We’re having a special tea and everything.

I would always support a home nation. If it were scotland in the semi, you can guarantee that the English would be supporting the Scots.

imdunkelnistgutmunkeln · 11/07/2018 17:20

Ginger I can't speak for the whole of England, but I'm English and would support (and have supported) other U.K. teams including Scotland, unless of course they were playing England!

mistermagpie · 11/07/2018 17:26

I'm English and live in Scotland. I don't care about football in the slightest and have never brought it up with anyone ever, but have had loads of people in the last week moaning on to me about the commentators and saying they don't want England to win, as if I would be remotely interested. It's bizarre and a bit irritating but they are obviously trying to wind me up somehow.

There is an extremely anti-England-winning vibe from most people I know, but they aren't anti-England as such.

mistermagpie · 11/07/2018 17:27

Also, my view is that it's not the commentators who are playing, so why do they stop some people supporting they players?

aprilanne · 11/07/2018 17:30

i hope they go all the way and win for my friends husband .why not support them we scottish are just jealous because our team are pants
