I’m English and surrounded by people saying it's coming home. Do people actually believe it will or are they just saying it?

and why not?be positive.

DayKay · 04/07/2018 15:04

Well, until they’re out, there’s always a chance.

lanre · 04/07/2018 15:09

never say never.

but no - it's not.

FootballsComingHome · 04/07/2018 15:12

Yup

percheron67 · 04/07/2018 15:13

Does it matter? Will the ordinary English person gain anything? I think not.

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/07/2018 15:18

until they're out, ther's always a chance

^ this.

And why this obsession with 'gain'? Why isn’t just enjoying an experience with like minded people not considered a 'gain'? Even if you can’t relate, surely you can comprehend?

ReservoirDogs · 04/07/2018 15:24

Yes I have gained a real feel good factor this week.

Come on England!

(It's coming home).

My 25 year old son texted me last night "It's coming home Mum. I love you!" If it takes an England win to have that happen so be it Grin

KokoandAllBall · 04/07/2018 16:01

Until yesterday we were the country who couldn't get past penalties... We have a keen young team and a good manager, they have as much chance as anyone else.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 04/07/2018 16:16

David Baddiel was quoted as saying ' it's not coming home yet as such but it's certainly googling flights' I thought that quite funny. and yeas stay positive!

Candyflip · 04/07/2018 16:18

Yes. It is coming home. Keep the faith.

Figgygal · 04/07/2018 16:20

Nope I want to plug my ears up the amount of times I've heard that obnoxious phrase today

They went into this World Cup with the least amount of fuss because no one had any confidence in them now they win two games and let's face it they didn't win yesterday they had To battle it out to win on penalties after they drew to battle it out to win on penalties after they drew and people are falling over themselves like they're the second coming

Ridiculous

Figgygal · 04/07/2018 16:21

Oops sorry about the duplication there bloody Siri

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/07/2018 16:22

No.Sad I'm afraid that Russia are winning it this year.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 04/07/2018 16:37

Just to be pedantic it's not because the World Cup isn't English, what's coming home in the song is football not the trophy.

The original version of Three Lions was released for the last occasion on which the World Cup was hosted in England, so its football which was invented in England, that's coming home.

KokoandAllBall · 04/07/2018 18:27

I'm afraid that Russia are winning it this year.

Is it common for the host country to win?

Wittow · 04/07/2018 18:56

For Russia to win it, if it's a FIFA fix, as plenty of people are saying, then if they play England, England would have to deliberately throw the game, which ain't gonna happen is it??? I think there is the will to win in the camp, apart from Jordan Henderson, who's body language said he was gonna miss that pen.

heatwave2018 · 04/07/2018 20:48

Russia had better not win it!

I hate football, but notwithstanding that, why is it referred to as 'football coming home'? I don't understand that. It's not as if the England team have actually covered themselves in glory over the last 50 odd years!

Oblomov18 · 05/07/2018 07:35

Of course it's not coming home. Bless them!

somewhereovertherain · 05/07/2018 07:38

Wonder how Baddiel and Skinner feel that the song could soon apply to them as it’s 28 years since first out.

And no it’s not coming home unless they can find a decent midfield play maker. Though for me going to make the most of the very quiet afternoon to go shopping.

somewhereovertherain · 05/07/2018 07:41

Oops sorry 22 years. Even so it’s a bit long in the tooth now. Though I’m sure Baddiel & Skinner will enjoy the royalties.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 05/07/2018 07:43

Wittow how on earth did Henderson's body language say to you he was going to miss the penalty?! Do you mean he didn't look as confident as the others Confused

Candyflip · 05/07/2018 07:45

why is it referred to as ‘football coming home’? ummm, because the game began in England.

megletthesecond · 05/07/2018 07:50

Sadly not.
But I'm relieved we finally have a manager who doesn't stick to the same tried and tested players.

I also think Russia will win.

Eminybob · 05/07/2018 07:52

The original version of Three Lions was released for the last occasion on which the World Cup was hosted in England

It was the Euros, not the World Cup that was hosted in 1996 and for which the song was written. It was re-released for the 1998 World Cup with different lyrics.
