Enormous underarm boil... does this need a doctor?

Apologies for the stubble Blush

This has come up over the last 4 days and it's super-annoying. Magnesium sulphate hasn't done much, nor have hot compresses (although it has grown pretty big pretty fast).

Should I get to the docs to have it drained?

@PawsQueen and did it come back because the sac was still there? Or what happened?

@DobbyTheHouseElk

I don’t think that will gush, I think that’s swelling not pus in there. Be careful you don’t want to push it deeper.

I'll be honest, @DobbyTheHouseElk, I'm with you on this one.

It's sort of weeping from the head but it doesn't feel like it's 'full'. There's not enough pressure to 'pop' it.

Have a feeling this one might be a letdown, crew...

Yes, it is time to see a doctor about that. It does, indeed, look infected. And if it is not drained properly, even if it does drain it may well recur, sometimes for YEARS. Do not ask me (or the rather large hole in my armpit) how I know this. Should have gone when it first cropped up.

Did your doctor say how long to leave it before going back? It might need draining

Report
Russell19 · 24/06/2021 20:28

I'd have to pop that

lemons - mine was like that - lots of swelling but the infection was deep. Glad you got to the gp for antibiotics. When it does open eventually you'll get some relief...

@Horehound no I have hidradenitis supprativa so abscesses come back very often. Mine are mostly groin but my left armpit started with that abscess. Hasn't come back (crossed fingers) since they did the plastic surgery on it

Ouch. I had one just like that a few months ago. I got antib’s and it burst after a hot bath. It was an oozer because the pus was so thick and green!

I have a pic somewhere.

Ooh, Tina that is green!

I will admit now to be nursing an armpit situation. It’s been a slow drip. No gush of gunge.

My DS had one like that. It was a cyst .

He tried shifting it with hot compresses, etc. Nothing worked. Eventually he had to have it removed.

It was done by a nurse. He took antibiotics afterwards.

I would advise you to go and have it seen to.

I don’t remember it being smelly but I was euphoric with relief so I wouldn’t have cared!

It does look like wasabi Grin
