We’ve been working with Facebook to find out the key areas users want to know about the social media platform. From our research and activity so far we have found 4 main areas that parents have questions around: ‘Moderating content’, ‘User's data privacy’, ‘Mental health & social media’ and ‘Safe use of the internet/Facebook’. We will be running 4 Q&A’s in order to cover these areas and allow MNers the chance to ask their questions on each topic.

This Q&A is about ‘safe use of the internet/Facebook’. This covers subjects such as teaching your children online safety, online safety being taught in schools, and Facebook sharing advice, tips and resources on how to stay safer on the platform.

Here’s what Facebook has to say: “We're committed to keeping you, your friends and your family safe when you're on Facebook – and online in general. Of course, we understand that it's especially important for parents that their children always stay safe. That's why we offer parents tools and resources to help them understand online safety so they can have the right conversations with their children."
#AskFacebook

Would you like to know the most important things to teach your teenagers about how to stay safe online? How to approach the topic of online safety with your children or what to do if you know of someone being bullied? Perhaps you’d like to know how Facebook promotes online safety? Maybe you’d like to know what resources Facebook has made available both online and in schools to promote safety on their platform?

Whatever questions you have around safe use of the internet/Facebook, please post them on the thread below and we will choose approximately 10 for Facebook to answer. Everyone who posts their questions will be entered into a prize draw where 3 MNers will win a £100 voucher of their choice (from a list).

If you would like to ask questions about ‘user’s data privacy’ please click here
If you would like to ask questions about ‘mental health & social media’ please click here

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

How do I block all new friend requests ? My niece has her school friends and family, but has had unwanted friend requests from males - how to I make sure she keeps her account as private as possible ? Thank you

We've stopped putting pictures of kids on Facebook as we're worried what they'll be inheriting when they get older. Will they have the option to remove things they're tagged in once they're old enough if they so wish?

Cismyfatarse1 · 26/04/2019 14:45

How do you ensure that the adverts and suggestions on Facebook are suitable for younger users? I keep having totally inappropriate "friends" suggested to me - usually teenagers in my area whose parents I know. How does this work in reverse? Is my daughter offered, for example, much older people as "friends"?

How can you check children are not opening accounts ?

Smotheroffive · 27/04/2019 01:07

Do people actually trust Facebook? Surely not.

It's highly untrustworthy, and basically encourages the worst of human behaviour s and manipulates young minds into believing complete strangers are somehow 'friends'/

It's whole basis of ethos is therefore badly flawed.

No-one should be indoctrinating children into believing such dangerous nonsense, and encouraging them to expose themselves to strangers, post personal photos and hand over the copyrights of their lives to this hideous machine.

The way it is constructed is inherently unsafe for adults let alone children and the options for trying to make your account safe are ridiculously tedious and unclear to be sure your account is safe, and even then its not.

Is anyone going to answer these questions?

Smotheroffive · 28/04/2019 00:35

I don’t like that there isn’t an easier way to delete pictures en masse - for example, I’ve recently decided I want to take all of pictures of my children off Facebook, but can’t delete the ‘Uploads’ album. Instead, I’ve just deactivated my account, which is a shame, because I use it to keep up with friends and family all over the world.

MissusDave · 29/04/2019 16:12

Have you thought about introducing a method where parents or guardians have to approve the creation of an account for minors? And a system whereby they cannot have an account without a linked adult? Not necessarily to monitor content or spy or anything creepy like that, but just so the parent/guardian knows their child has a Facebook account. Obviously you'd need to make sure that the adult has the right to give consent for the child, and isn't just a random adult...

pearldeodorant · 29/04/2019 17:59

Would you say a Facebook profile without a full name / photos is safer than one with both/either one? It's hard to know what's acceptable and what's not for children.

Gatoadigrado · 30/04/2019 07:00

Will there ever be a way of seeing who has looked at a FB profile and how many times?

Bigsighall · 30/04/2019 22:22

How possible is it to ensure the issue of fake news reaches a teenage audience ?
