We’ve been working with Facebook to find out the key areas users want to know about the social media platform. From our research and activity so far we have found 4 main areas that parents have questions around: ‘Moderating content’, ‘User's data privacy’, ‘Mental health & social media’ and ‘Safe use of the internet/Facebook’. We will be running 4 Q&A’s in order to cover these areas and allow MNers the chance to ask their questions on each topic.

This Q&A is about ‘safe use of the internet/Facebook’. This covers subjects such as teaching your children online safety, online safety being taught in schools, and Facebook sharing advice, tips and resources on how to stay safer on the platform.

Here’s what Facebook has to say: “We're committed to keeping you, your friends and your family safe when you're on Facebook – and online in general. Of course, we understand that it's especially important for parents that their children always stay safe. That's why we offer parents tools and resources to help them understand online safety so they can have the right conversations with their children."
#AskFacebook

Would you like to know the most important things to teach your teenagers about how to stay safe online? How to approach the topic of online safety with your children or what to do if you know of someone being bullied? Perhaps you’d like to know how Facebook promotes online safety? Maybe you’d like to know what resources Facebook has made available both online and in schools to promote safety on their platform?

Whatever questions you have around safe use of the internet/Facebook, please post them on the thread below and we will choose approximately 10 for Facebook to answer. Everyone who posts their questions will be entered into a prize draw where 3 MNers will win a £100 voucher of their choice (from a list).

If you would like to ask questions about ‘user’s data privacy’ please click here
If you would like to ask questions about ‘mental health & social media’ please click here

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

I've reported inappropriate content before to be blunt it was a picture of a woman giving the appearance of having sex with a dog apparently this did not violate guidelines and is still up now the picture of my child flashing a bit (literally) of butt cheek got me banned for a few days a guy threatened me called my kids names he is still on there disabalist speech is fine according to Facebook no ban at all 🤷‍♀️

Flapdoodles · 31/03/2019 10:42

I think Facebook needs to do more to promote internet safety and make it easier for people joining Facebook to set up their account privately. It took a lot of searching and trial and error to set up my own account.

slipperywhensparticus · 31/03/2019 20:37

Someone using the "n" word doesn't breach community guidelines well what does Facebook answer me that?

Mummymummums · 01/04/2019 22:20

How come if I search for something on-line via google, for example, wallpaper, why is my Facebook feed suddenly full of ads for wallpaper? How do you know what I searched for?

del2929 · 01/04/2019 23:25

can a parent link their acc with say their childs?

SpamChaudFroid · 02/04/2019 13:42

Does Facebook really use FB Messenger to snoop on it's users?

momoftwo76 · 02/04/2019 17:15

How does Facebook check the age of account holders? It appears very easy for young children to put a fake DOB and open an account

Theimpossiblegirl · 02/04/2019 17:56

What are Facebook doing to protect its users? Surely there must be a way of promoting positive use of social media. It's all adverts and trolls at the moment.

dancingthroughthedark · 03/04/2019 08:56

What steps do you take to ensure under age children are not using Facebook. What do you do if a report is made that someone is underage?

Caillou · 03/04/2019 12:04

Would it be possible to have a "safer" Facebook aimed at younger people? A bit like YouTube kids where content is moderated?

foxessocks · 03/04/2019 18:42

How can the guidelines for keeping your account safe and secure be made simpler and be promoted more?

JC4PMPLZ · 04/04/2019 10:13

what does safe mean? Does it mean keeping my data away from advertisers - wish it did.

queenoftheschoolrun · 04/04/2019 14:20

What are your plans for making Facebook safer for younger users - links to parental accounts? guidelines? restrictions? proof of age checks? As far as I know at the moment, anyone with an e-mail address can set up an account as long as they tick a box to say they're over 13. Please tell me I'm wrong!

CopperPan · 04/04/2019 21:36

How do you support vulnerable people on social media, particularly those who might lack insight into how they are putting themselves at risk?

Laurajjj561 · 05/04/2019 15:09

How do you make sure that people are the age they say they are .and how do you make sure Facebook is safe and adults are not pretending to be children .

RoseMartha · 05/04/2019 17:32

There needs to be a different way to set up an account. It is too easy for pre teens to set up account and lie about their age. Have you anything planned to help prevent this?

JC4PMPLZ · 09/04/2019 10:05

If your fingers are wet, is there a danger of electric shock?

MTBMummy · 09/04/2019 14:48

why does facebook not act on reported underage accounts?

Warrenbrooke1999 · 09/04/2019 20:40

Why is some of the content allowed to stay on fb when If I find it disturbing surely our children will be disturbed by watching it ? I find it really scary that our children are growing up around all the bad stuff out there that us as mothers try our best to keep them away from so why is it not taken down before it reaches thousands of shares? Thanks

callmecrazybut · 11/04/2019 17:26

Could you introduce a system where young people's accounts can be linked with a parent's until a certain age? I feel this would really reduce the risk of online bullying and grooming as people would know they weren't just speaking to the child. It could have prevented kids like Shamima Begum leaving for Syria.

WhiteDust · 12/04/2019 09:11

The 'view as' button was the best and easiest way I had to ensure that my privacy settings were working correctly.
Please put it back. Have you any plans to?

MargoLovebutter · 25/04/2019 12:10

Given it is the significant adult's responsibility in any child's life to protect them and keep them safe, what is Facebook doing to educate parents / carers / guardians about how to keep young people and children safe online?

One only has to see the high numbers of parents who have accounts with no privacy settings applied and they post photos of their children in their school uniform to realise that parental or adult ignorance is an ongoing issue.

TripleSeptic · 25/04/2019 17:45

The procedures to protect your own privacy and history are too complicated. Could you just lock and secure everything and then let people opt out specifically for things that people want to share with people they want to share with?

WowOoo · 25/04/2019 17:52

What action do you take if there is evidence of online bullying?

Sourtart · 25/04/2019 21:11

Please can you just simplify the whole privacy thing? It’s just a mine field.
