We’ve been working with Facebook to find out the key areas users want to know about the social media platform. From our research and activity so far we have found 4 main areas that parents have questions around: ‘Moderating content’, ‘User's data privacy’, ‘Mental health & social media’ and ‘Safe use of the internet/Facebook’. We will be running 4 Q&A’s in order to cover these areas and allow MNers the chance to ask their questions on each topic.

This Q&A is about ‘user’s data privacy’. This covers subjects such as: what personal information is on the platform, targeted advertising, how data is used, deletion policy and 3rd party access.

Here’s what Facebook has to say: "Anybody with a Facebook account can use our Access Your Information tool. This allows you to see all of your own Facebook personal data such as photos, posts, reactions and comments all in one place. You can also go here to delete anything from your timeline or profile that you no longer want on Facebook. This simple tool puts you in control of your own information. We want to rebuild your trust by building better. That means working harder, finding new solutions, and doing more to protect what’s yours"

Would you like to know how to permanently delete photos or posts? Perhaps you would like a breakdown of how to ensure your privacy settings are up-to-date? Do you have questions about what data Facebook collects and how it is used? Maybe you’d like to know more about targeted ads and how they work? Or perhaps you have questions about what exactly ‘sign in via Facebook’ means on other sites?

Whatever questions you have around user’s data privacy on Facebook, please post them on the thread below and we will choose approximately 10 for Facebook to answer. Everyone who posts their questions will be entered into a prize draw where 3 MNers will win a £100 voucher of their choice (from a list).

If you would like to ask questions about ‘moderating content’ please click here
If you would like to ask questions about ‘mental health & social media’ please click here
If you would like to ask questions about ‘safe use of the internet/Facebook’ please click here

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

How many people see and process my data that don't need to?

MrsFrTedCrilly Fri 22-Mar-19 11:05:31

How can you see what historical context is visible, photos posts etc?

bellinisurge Mon 25-Mar-19 11:17:42

@EllieMumsnet , do you intend to speak to the Information Commissioner following the end of this exercise. Makes sense to let the regulator know what posters have said and what the responses were.

Does Facebook collect the same data from all users even those under 18?

Can you provide an up to date, easy to understand and thorough guide showing users exactly how to ensure their settings are set as they wish them to be?

Is it possible that an account can easily be reset to the most stringent and secure data privacy settings easily and then tweaked as required to allow certain types of sharing as required?

sharond101 Mon 25-Mar-19 12:54:31

Are my details shared with Instagram?

Can you/do you monitor private messages on facebook messenger to uncover bullying and self harm promotion ?

jacqui5366 Mon 25-Mar-19 13:29:17

I have an old facebook account from my late teens, which I no longer use, I know it's still there, but no longer have access to the email account I activated facebook with, so cannot deactivate/delete my account and its contents - is there anyway around this ?

daniel1996 Mon 25-Mar-19 13:35:55

When I delete a photo - is it permanently deleted - and will not be seen by anyone - I have photos with an abusive ex which I have deleted and need assurance they are gone forever.

ButterflyOfFreedom Mon 25-Mar-19 16:58:03

What other platforms are my details / posts / photos etc shared with?

Ribeebie Mon 25-Mar-19 17:04:38

Is it possible to ensure that previous posts that I have deleted eg photos are no longer visible online to other people?

SuzCG Mon 25-Mar-19 20:32:43

Define exactly '3rd party access'? Who is this and why is it necessary??

GetKnitted Mon 25-Mar-19 21:53:21

Do you analyse the encrypted messages in WhatsApp? or is it really genuinely private messaging?

PianoOnlyTheWhiteKeys Mon 25-Mar-19 23:08:51

What is the privacy policy around content in "private groups"? Are photos or comments posted in these groups saved and used too? It would help me solve a debate with some friends who share photos of their kids.

azulmariposa Tue 26-Mar-19 06:56:37

How much of our data is shared with 3rd parties?

Do you track websites visited outside of Facebook?

How comes when I talk about something, adverts appear on Facebook for the same thing shortly after? Is Facebook using the microphone to listen and target it's advertising?

lolly2010 Tue 26-Mar-19 10:36:20

How can you keep on top of changes in privacy policy to ensure my account is as up to date as possible?

Milkn0sugar Tue 26-Mar-19 16:28:52

How do you go about deleting a Facebook account permanently (not just 'de-activating' the account) to ensure that your data can never be stored or used by Facebook i.e. now or in the future?

sarat1 Tue 26-Mar-19 19:12:50

Why do the targeted adverts never seem to be age appropriate for my baby?

ItsHardToExplain Tue 26-Mar-19 20:05:39

I have deleted my Facebook account but is it deleted really? I believe there was some kind of disclaimer saying that the photos etc are not 100% deleted.

Bumblebeans Tue 26-Mar-19 20:52:39

Would you consider making it clearer how to make sure your profile is private and how to use the privacy settings

kateandme Tue 26-Mar-19 22:19:17

idf it says sign in via facebook on other sites does this then link them somehow and they can access imformation on either facebook or the sit eyour logging into.
I didn't know about the your imformation can this be easier to find out about and do the deleting or seeing of all posts and chats.

kateandme Tue 26-Mar-19 22:33:21

if ads can be triggering or harmful to certain persos mental health.but it still shows it anyway due to the things they might have looked up,how easy can it be for them to get it taken away from their eyes all the time.

kateandme Tue 26-Mar-19 22:34:57

for instance a person in a moment of ill health lets say with an eating disorder looks up weight loss.then their sideline is bombarded ith weight loss things which then fuels and triggers all over again!

GenericHamster Wed 27-Mar-19 12:07:31

Can you make it clearer/easier for users to remove targeted ads?
