This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Non-attendee: The Size of your room and location of your sofa. If it doesn't fit, you are in trouble!

I live in a town house where everything has been impossible to get up the stairs and last sofa had to come through the 2nd floor window so for me the size and shape of it{does it come apart in sections!] is most important!
If my house was different and it was easy to get sofa in i would always say comfort as its no good if it looks great but is uncomfortable to sit on.

Bacere · 14/08/2017 21:56

Non-attendee: comfort and quality, so will you still find it fits your lifestyle in 5 years.

starlingsintheslipstream · 14/08/2017 22:32

Non-attendee: I look for a nice design, durable (if not washable) covers and comfort. At the moment we've got an Ikea Ektorp but tbh I've never found it that comfy Sad. If I was buying again I would try out more sofas before choosing one.

MsPassepartout · 14/08/2017 23:06

Will it fit into the room and space we've got? Realistically, anything bigger than the sofa we've got now just wouldn't fit at all.

RobertsCrew · 15/08/2017 01:02

The most important thing to remember is who is going to use it. There is no point in getting a really fancy, expensive white sofa if the kids or dogs would wreck it within five minutes. Don't get drawn in to just the looks but the practicalities of it too. Best of both worlds!

hannahbjm · 15/08/2017 07:49

The most important to me are the colour as want dark with children and how comfortable it is

andbabymakesthree · 15/08/2017 08:59

Non tester. How to clean it!!!!

oliveoyl72 · 15/08/2017 09:59

Non-attendee - What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

For me it would be that the style would work with different decor, so not quite neutral, but something that I could work with when redecorating (which I like to do more often than I change the sofa). Tan or green colours are good for that, without going down the cream or beige route, and leather is excellent for durability and cleaning.

Ren1974 · 15/08/2017 10:58

Non-attendee - believe it or not, I have never had to buy a new sofa as both my parents and sister-in-law change their sofas every few years and we have been given their old ones (which are always in great condition!).

However if I was looking for a new sofa, I would ensure it was comfortable and durable and preferably a darker colour so as not to get marked easily.

Dormouse1940 · 15/08/2017 12:54

Non attendee-

Stain resistant treatment!

Comfort, obviously.

Style and size- you've got to like it, as well as ensure it's big enough for purpose (can the whole family fit on- will you have anywhere for visitors to sit) and will it fit well in your chosen space.

When we our last sofa we had discreet castors fitted so I could move it out to hoover/retrieve lost toys etc. Our previous sofa was so heavy noone could move it!

rachelmi · 15/08/2017 13:31

Non attendee. I think comfort and practicality is important not just how lovely a sofa looks! Especially with kids and dog!

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

in my own case, will it fit through the front door? we live in a 1950s terrace with a tiny hallway, annoyingly located front door and odd porch. To get our last sofa, the delivery guys had to remove the legs of the sofa, the porch door and the front door, then nearly maimed themselves trying to maneuver the main bulk of the thing through the porch, into the hall, halfway up the stairs, try and turn over the bannister to then get to an angle where they could enter the livingroom. I wanted to tip them. They refused. They said they'd seen worse lol. They were actually from DFS.

rocketriffs · 15/08/2017 15:37

Non Attendee: The sofa measurements. Make sure it's going to get through the doors of your house without having to alter your door widths or damage the sofa.

Back support is very important. It may look lovely but you need the right support for your back.

Most important to me is how long it will last and how comfy it is.

Is it comfortable and are the covers washable?

jen1984j · 15/08/2017 20:19

Comfort and making sure the cushions bounce back, nothing worse than a dip in the sofa in the most popular seat!

boptanana · 15/08/2017 23:00

Non atendee- I think it has to be the right size and shape for the space it will occupy and the older I get the more I need it to be comfy and supportive as well as look stylish!

Bobbinwinding · 15/08/2017 23:02

Belated feedback from one of the attendees!

It was nice chatting to the friendly DFS staff, designers and other MNers at the event.

I was really surprised by how good the range of sofas was. Despite the fact we were looking to buy a new sofa I'd have never even considered looking at DFS. However they had some genuinely stylish sofas in their range - both classic styles and some more on-trend looks - that wouldn't look out of place in a high-end store.

We're now planing to buy a DFS sofa and I'd recommend to friends that they take a look at what DFS has to offer, particularly if they had a similar impression as me that DFS doesn't 'do' stylish.

KanyeWesticle · 16/08/2017 01:07

Non-attendee: comfort is key. Your proportions and posture really affect this, so it's important to try in person with your OH if needed. Online doesn't show you how it feels.

JemIsMyNameNooneElseIsTheSame · 16/08/2017 13:52

Comfort, definitely.

StewPots · 16/08/2017 17:12

Non-attendee. I think the most is important thing with buying a sofa is durability - will it stand up to DCs, pets, multiple occupants, stains... the list goes on!

I'd hate to buy a sofa that felt lumpy and bumpy after a year or so, didn't wash well and had to be replaced!

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?*

The most important thing for me to remember is to think with my head and not my heart. I would love a teal velvet sofa but with a small child and a cat it probably wouldn't last very long :(

Will it fit our lifestyle? Just because it looks fabulous when it's brand new and on display in a large, open showroom how is it going to look in our average-sized front room in a year's time?
We don't tend to buy new furniture very often so we need something that can cope with our day-to-day life (including our very bouncy dog).

In the past we made the mistake of buying the most comfortable suite in the shop only to find that it was far too large for our living room. Next time round we went for something smaller in a neutral fabric - not only was it a nightmare to keep clean but it seemed to cling on to any smells too.
