With lockdown rules still in place, we have turned our homes and gardens into a playground to help our children stay active by playing inside. With many of us juggling work and keeping children active, we know that finding fun ways to entertain your children and channel their energy in creative play can be a challenge.
That’s why Nike, in partnership with ukactive Kids, has launched the Move Crew - daily activity missions, designed to help kids unlock their 60 minutes of daily recommended activity.

Here’s what Nike says:
'Move Crew is a daily programme developed with the expertise of teachers and physical activity specialists, elite athletes, kids and coaches. Each day delivers a new mission, designed to get kids aged 7-12 on their feet. Across 8-weeks, each Monday, a Nike athlete announces a weekly theme at ukactive.com/movecrew, and every morning, the new Mission is released. One of our athletes Dina Asher-Smith, the fastest British woman in recorded history said: “As an athlete, mixing it up and giving myself daily challenges is the best way to stay motivated. I’m so excited to have got to work with ukactive and Nike to inspire young boys and girls to keep moving at home.'

With that in mind, we want to find out more about the ways you and your children are staying active. How are you and your children staying active at home? Do your children have favourite activities? Perhaps you and your family have invented games to keep active? What do you miss most about playing outside with more freedom? What are the biggest challenges you face when trying to find fun or educational activities for your children?

From indoor fort building to garden relay, share your stories of keeping your children and family active during the lockdown on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list), provided by Mumsnet.

Thanks and good luck,

They love doing Joe Wicks in the morning. We've also been out for long bike rides. It's turned into a good routine now and a good break from work for me.

evespudding · 09/06/2020 16:37

Joe Wicks, when she can be persuaded to do it. Walking sometimes but it's a struggle.

wingsandstrings · 09/06/2020 16:48
  1. Bike rides, walks or runs every day - the rule is no screen time until we've done some exercise.
  2. We're also continuing some sports commitments on zoom - my DD has karate classes on zoom, she even recently did a grading and received her purple belt on zoom; my DS is doing fitness and ball skills with his rugby club a couple of times a week on zoom.
  3. We are all doing certain exercises (squats, planks, wall sits, burpees etc) and noting our performance week on week, to see how we're getting fitter.

We've been doing Les Mills online videos. They have a 60 day free trial with hundreds of videos so it is like being a gym classes. It's good for some routine.
Also being going for long walks which helps with fresh air and mental health.
And gardening when the weather is nice!

mugelbbub · 09/06/2020 22:54

Not as much as we should. We've got rearranged junior triathlons to prepare for so, got a run planned for Saturday. Other than that, Just Dance, walking the dog and playing in the garden, but not everyday for the children. Really we must do better.

AllNewThings · 10/06/2020 02:36

We moved house 6 months ago and hadn't had time to really explore the area yet, so we've found a couple of really nice walks (the 'sheep walk' through the fields of sheep and lambs and the 'farm walk' past a working farm with cows, chickens and a farm cat and dog) which are much more interesting for the DC than doing a circuit round the local park, so they're quite keen to go. We sometimes take them in the evening after dinner which is always usually bath/bed time, so they're keener still cause they think it's a big treat to be out later than usual. The walks are long but they're on a circuit so the kids know that there's no point in whinging and that we're heading in the direction of home. We've also been playing really basic games in the garden, like frisbee but getting them to stand in a group (we have five DC) and having two or three going at the same time. Our cat likes it when they run around the garden pulling a skipping rope behind them and will chase them for ages doing that. I'm also overlooking some of the rough 'wrestle-y' play that I would normally tell them to pack in, because I see that they have a lot of extra energy just now from doing less activity generally.

Dontuforgetaboutme · 10/06/2020 09:32

We have a titchy garden but have a trampoline so that is getting lots of use. We also dance whenever we can. I try and be an active fidget rather than a sloth and lead by example.

BellaVida · 10/06/2020 09:32

Just before lockdown, we anticipated what was coming and bought a netball post. All 4 DC have used it fir netball and basketball- they even took to videoing trick shots! We already had a trampoline, so my youngest has used that a lot. At the start of lockdown, I bought a gym ball and balance plate, which we have used indoors. The gym ball has doubled up as a chair when they are playing on the PlayStation, which keeps them using their core and sitting properly even when they don’t think they’re exercising! At the start, we all did the run 5K nominate 5 people for charity. Then when measures were lifted, the older three have taken a rugby ball to the local grounds to do drills and kicking. We have also been going on bike rides and long walks- the longest walk so far was 13km. The DC are really missing their school and club sports activities, but the best part is that we have been able to do much more together as a family.

montyliesandmontycries · 10/06/2020 10:11

We’ve all turned into sea swimmers ( with the help of some cheap wetsuits!) and the kids spend hours hitting a tennis ball against our garden wall in the tiny back garden. There’s not much room to move around so they’ve got really accurate.
Other than that it’s cycling around our now almost traffic free neighbourhood streets and lots and lots of family walks.

montyliesandmontycries · 10/06/2020 10:12

Oh, and we’re getting a lot of use out of a little indoor exercise trampoline, the kids love to take turns to have a bounce while watching telly in the evening

Didiusfalco · 10/06/2020 10:15

We are walking, gardening, but what my kids really like is going out on their scooter/skateboard. Since lockdown has eased there’s also been a bit of socially distanced football with Grandad in the garden.

Anj123 · 10/06/2020 18:34

Daughter asked for a treadmill for Christmas so that has come in handy. Hubby uses it most! Daughter does work outs every day watching online videos as guides. I have recently got an ab roller. We go out for walks too.

Ratbagcatbag · 11/06/2020 08:46

My dd aged 7 broke her leg last year so she never learnt to ride her bike. In lockdown we've nailed it and she wanted to go further and further. My issue is I don't have a bike and I haven't ridden in 20 years. I found one, and now we go out twice a week as a minimum, taking picnics with us. It's made a huge difference to my fitness levels and we are loving the time together doing something new.

oceany · 11/06/2020 12:19

joe wicks, lots of walks. decent waterproofs so can get out when wet

Lifesbetterwithwine · 11/06/2020 16:03

My own children are young adults now and are walking and running to stay active. I work as a TA In a primary school and have been looking after the children of keyworkers during lockdown. We have been joining in with Joe Wickes PE, Andy’s wild workouts, Cosmic kids yoga, go noodle activities, as well as making full use of the playground for football, skipping, ball skills, running races, tennis skills, basketball practice etc. Interested in looking into Move Crew.

tigerbear · 11/06/2020 18:04

I’ve recently started sessions with my personal trainer again, and DD has been joining in for the first half hour.
When I first told her that we’d be doing it, she was less than impressed, as unfortunately hated doing the Joe Wicks session as it was ‘just too difficult’, apparently.
She begrudgingly came out to do the first one, and has now done several. Although she says she doesn’t want to do it, once she’s out there, I can tell she enjoys it.

We’re lucky enough to have a massive communal lawn at the end of our Close, and being out there actually makes exercise so much more enjoyable. I definitely won’t be returning to the gym after this, and will continue to train outdoors.

gingerbreadslice · 11/06/2020 20:13

They do dance and kids yoga which calms them down a lot but also helps keep them fit Smile

Beach11 · 11/06/2020 21:02

We have done PE with Joe every morning as a family so far. During homeschooling break times playing in the garden, in the afternoon a walk through the woods or a cycle and then more garden games in the evening.
Luckily the dc love sport and exercise even in the rain and cold

zingally · 12/06/2020 13:54

My 3-year-old boy-girl twins are really enjoying "competitions" at the moment. :)

I have to invent a competition for them, off the top of my head, and it's actually good fun. At the moment we have been holding "The Trampoline Championship". Each kid has 5 mins of practice to decide on their best trampoline move, then I record each "performance" on my phone, and then we critique them! They think it's the funniest thing ever, as I'm going "Oh the style! Look at that move! That jump! Incredible!!"

Wargghhhh · 12/06/2020 15:09

We have a jam jar full of 20 minutes (or less) activities (written on paper and folded up) - these can be anything from a YouTube workout, to designing an obstacle course around the garden to running up and down the stairs 20 times. Keeps the kids entertained and they never know what's coming next!

anothermansmother · 12/06/2020 16:06

My dc are fencing 🤺 the sporting kind almost daily we've replaced their normal swords with pool noodles, so it saves having to put on loads of fit and it's keeping them fit and focused.
We also have a competition on the spin bike, who can do more time, calories or distance as we were all becoming a bit too sluggish.
In addition to this were our walking each day and have started doing more trips on foot eg to the shops rather than to the bigger shop in the car.
I've started couch to 5k and we do run together at least once a week.
My dc miss all of their sports and being active and both ds and I miss the gym. The only silver lining is my dd is now tall enough to join us.

BrandyandBabycham · 12/06/2020 18:12

I get depressed reading what everyone else does because it’s all I can do to get DD11 out of her room! She loves being in the sea so when the weather’s decent, we take bodyboards & her inflatable to the beach. I love it too, DH tolerates it for us. He cycles 3 times a week. I have thought very hard about doing yoga & Pilates lol 😂

ScorpionQueen · 12/06/2020 23:29

We have a dog so daily walks have been happening right the way through lockdown. He's fitter then he's ever been!

buckeejit · 13/06/2020 07:09

It's a mission! I've taken to hiding the electronic gadgets so they have to do a lot of hunting before playing. They only get a clue after 15 minutes searching! At least it increases their step count

IWouldBeSuperb · 13/06/2020 07:11

LOTS of walks, cycling, ball games in the park and just starting to get the little one I to yoga- which is mostly just hilarious, but still good for health I'm sure! Grin
