NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

i used to love kerby (throwing a football to try and hit the kerb) Tiggy (one person counts to 100 and the other hid) in winter when the nights drew in i invented tiggy spot light (same game but you were found with a torch light lol) also conkers - British bulldog - skipping - hopscotch and clapping games. I also invented a game at school with a tennis ball were we had to throw it at a wooden sign on the side of the wall if you missed you were out and were you caught the ball you had to throw it from. Wow kids had so much fun and imagination back in the day lol

I’m English, but went to the French Lycee in London, so I had different cultural influences on my playground games.,8 lived French Skipping with elastics though. I was never very good, especially at knee height and higher, but I loved it. I changed to an ordinary English state school when I was 10 and introduced it there.

chloe282 · 21/01/2019 09:10

Hop scotch was one of my favourites, and also duck duck goose! I loved playing in the school playground. It was always a happy place to be.

becky004 · 21/01/2019 09:16

French skipping, my daughter thinks I'm mad when I tell her what we used to do with a huge loop of elastic! Hopscotch was another favourite.

footdust · 21/01/2019 09:29

We love skipping and also French skipping which involved elastic around two peoples ankles and a person in the middle jumping on the elastic and doing complicated twists and jumping out of it.
We played a homemade game called STOP. Oh this is bring back so many memories...

jessiecat333 · 21/01/2019 10:24

Use to play football mostly, but also British Bulldogs (until the dinnerladies told us off!), What Time Is It Mr Wolf, Tag, Dodgeball (also banned by the Dinnerladies!)

allsorts4444 · 21/01/2019 10:27

I used to love football, run-outs and mob mob. Although you don't really see kids playing these games anymore, too busy on their games consoles to go outside and play which is such a shame :(

finleypop · 21/01/2019 10:31

Skipping & rollerskating were my favourite games to play when I was a child. I'm sad that children don't really play any more

Positivekate · 21/01/2019 10:34

TiggersAngel7774 · 21/01/2019 10:43

Used to love the dodgeball games

Ganne1 · 21/01/2019 10:53

In France, I played hopscotch, but my husband's memories might be more relevant. He played tag a lot, but, as the school playground consisted of small stones and gravel, his knees still bear the scars.

emmav6 · 21/01/2019 10:53
