NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

I loved skipping and hopscotch best, but also five stones where you had to bounce a small ball and keep picking up increasing numbers of small stones until you picked up 5! I think you could just use one hand to play...that makes me want to go and have a try. It seemed great fun back in the day!

British bull dog. Tag/it/chase. What's the time Mr Wolf. Creep mouse. Blind mans blufff. Games with Marbles

cakedup · 20/01/2019 22:30

French skipping was big
Oranges and lemons
Sock and ball game
Kiss chase! Me and my friend would spend entire break times chasing this poor boy in a duffle coat and plastering him in kisses

LoveWasAccidental · 21/01/2019 00:10

We played the usual British Bulldog etc but also Kiss Chase - which got banned at one point - and a lot of fantasy games based around magical adventures.

LoveWasAccidental · 21/01/2019 00:15

ImportantWater I also played Clockworks and Polo and am wondering if we grew up in the same area... South Coast?

WannabeGilmoreGirl · 21/01/2019 00:47

Bulldog and Elastics

Spices001 · 21/01/2019 06:46

Absolutely LOVED elastic! Still think about it now 😊

Lindseymorris29 · 21/01/2019 06:49

We used to recreate the dances to the Take That songs and New Kidz on the Block. Play tick and British Bull Dogs.

I can vividly remember chanting a little ditty of ‘Please Mr Crocodile May we cross the water to see the fairy daughter on a flying saucer’ we all stood around what resembled an empty pond and the the ‘crocodile’ was in the middle and we then had to try and get to the other side without getting caught! FAB game! My other love was elastics be it with friends or using my dining room chairs!

APJ1 · 21/01/2019 06:55

My memories are mostly of the horrible 'games' I didn't enjoy! I think I enjoyed hopskotch.

leamarieee · 21/01/2019 07:08

Loved Bulldog and playing with Cat's Cradle for hours!

ThemisA · 21/01/2019 07:09

Skipping games and elastic were my favourite we also did rhymes and movements with our hands 'here's a church, here's a steeple.....'

compy99 · 21/01/2019 07:11

Marbles was the craze in the playground when I was at school. The thrill of winning a french marble or a brightly coloured unusual marble was great. The upset of someone dropping their tin of a couple of hundred prized marbles and someone shouting out “ scramble!” And everyone running to grab as many as they could which they kept as that was the rule!

MamaNewtNewt · 21/01/2019 07:12

I loved skipping, elastics, bulldog and tig

Sallyannlloydjones · 21/01/2019 07:12

Skipping and playing hopscotch was always fun to do at school.

SSCRASE123 · 21/01/2019 07:26

We had a game called "BumFuzz". It was just a throw the tennis ball against the wall game but if you dropped it or fumbled it then whoever got the ball could throw it at you !. All very childish but good fun.

hmariez · 21/01/2019 07:27

Hop scotch and what time is it mr wolf

Didiusfalco · 21/01/2019 07:32

We spent hours skipping. Sometimes alone or in groups, sometimes with two skipping ropes. Also used to like the game ‘Grandmas footsteps’.

GrandCouchon · 21/01/2019 07:33

Red Rover!

letsgomaths · 21/01/2019 07:48

@hotcuppaplease With blind man's buff, did you play so that you had to work out who you'd caught? I was very bad at that!

We also used to dare each other to stay blindfolded for a whole playtime. Usually the rest of us would do something nearby, so that whoever couldn't see could hear that we were there. But sometimes we did leave the blind person on their own, watching from afar to see if anyone approached them, and to make sure they didn't peep!

Lisapaige24 · 21/01/2019 07:58

Hoola hoops, cats cradle, hand clapping & hop scotch

007hel · 21/01/2019 08:16
