I just want to survive after my return from maternity in the first week of 2019!

I'm self employed and WFH. I've been 'back at work' since DS was 3 days old but making my job work practically just isn't happening for me. He's now 14 months and it's incredibly hard to prioritise the time to do my job around his naps/activities. He's a bad sleeper so most of his naps are taken with me present. My job also involves silence so I can't even work whilst he's playing/watching TV.

So I guess I would love to get the balance back. There's so much more I want to achieve in my career but I have neither the time or the energy to get it done which can really get me down. I'm hoping as he gets older it will be easier and maybe childcare might have to come in to play, but (being in London) it is financially draining to send him to nursery/similar and it would have to equal out for it to be worthwhile.

I need to return to work after six years out. Every now and then I fill myself up with positive thoughts and believe I can do it but mostly I face the prospect with a combined sense of dread and deep self-doubt.

I am looking to take the next step in my career, and move up a grade perhaps in a more operational role (currently strategic management in public sector). I've been in my current role for two and a half years now and am concerned that standing still for too long will make me less attractive to future employers and will make me less confident to take the next step.

I'm retraining in 2019 Grin we'll, starting to. I'm starting a degree on the 26th of January.

Whilst I'm studying, I really want to do something relevant and more rewarding. I hate my current job, and find it just leaves me stressed and anxious which has an awful impact on DH and DS. I'm going to start volunteering at my local cafe the homeless in the new year, hopefully with a view to looking at taking on some agency work as a project worker so I can have a bit more flexibility around my family.

This time next year I just hope to be happier, more fulfilled and feel like I'm heading in the right direction.

I've recently left a job after nearly 20 years with the same company, I haven't not been employed since before I could legally work so this feels very strange!
But am using my time to retrain, doing some at home learning to ease me back into education then hopefully back into full time when DD starts school in September!

I have put in for a pay rise that will be decided in the spring. Really hoping to get an increase, though a chunk will be taken back in the child benefit repayment. Still hope for parity with other members of staff. And I want to find ways of better balancing work and family life, but think it unlikely. The pace of work is mounting and there are huge difficulties in our sector and likely another lot of strikes on the way. So unsettled times, for all of us. Planning is not really possible. Time to worry about DCs generation.

I've survived the 1st year of self employment and intend to take stock of everything I've achieved over the last 12 months.

One very simple goal for this coming year. Read for 30 minutes every day.

I've been out of work for the past 5 years supporting my autistic son. He goes to college next September and so do I. In my case a Uni to do a Return to Nursing Practice course so I can reregister as a nurse or possibly health visitor.

I can't wait to begin earning my own money again. But more than that it's about having a life outside being a Mum and a Carer.

I enjoy my job at the moment. It's well paid and flexible and comfortable. But I want to use the next few months to figure out what's next.

My current skillset used to be really niche. A few years ago I was one of a handful of experts in my industry. Poorly paid, but influential. Now my skills are rapidly becoming mainstream and, although I'm better paid, I'm no longer a leader in my field.

I need to find a new niche! And then figure out what to do in it.

Finding a job!

I left in 2014 to have my first DC. Then had another, who is now 2. The time feels right but I’m still nervous! I want the DC to see mummy go to work just like daddy.

Looking for a role in food and drink in Scotland. I’m half way through an MSc and have won funding for my dissertation from a charity supporting people with a particular food allergy. I can’t wait to do the research and write it up, and hopefully get it published, but most important of all is to maybe improve life for people with this food issue.

After that, I want to work with food manufacturers and begin to broaden and deepen my research into a doctoral thesis.

I failed my o levels 40 years ago and have already had two distinct careers. This will be my third wave!

I'm starting a new job in 2019 after many years in the same workplace. I need to make a plan for parts of my job that are flexible and establish myself in a new role with people who know me in my old role. And I need to find a way to manage the commute without decimating my time at home.

I would love to work for myself but unfortunately my skills and qualifications are rather niche and it's very unlikely I would earn anywhere near what I earn in this full time job I have now.

MN jobs is rubbish imo - hardly anything in Scotland and nothing at the kind of salary I'd need. It sucks that if you want to work more flexibly you have to take a pay cut or lower skilled role.

I love my job but i'm full time and finding that too much. A recent attempt to cut down some hours was refused, and to be fair most jobs in my line of work have to be full time. So i think i may need to retrain....no clue what else i could do though. I'm considering applying for a 3 day a week job in my line of work, below my level, with a much longer commute and on half the pay.
Agree with PP that MN jobs isn't great. I'm also on 2-3 days a week which has utterly random job posts. I look hopefully at all these sites whenever i get an email but nothing doing.

Well I have a bachelors degree in life science from my country but I don't have the certificate with me and it's very complicated to try to get it and I seriously doubt that I will find any employer who is ready to take my word for it I have to start all over again
I was told that the first step is gcse in English math and science and from then I will try to figure out what to do and what to study I'm looking for something that is well paid and would work with my life as a mother
My friend suggested a stripper but I don't have the body for it😆😆😆😆

My goal is to take it slowly at first. I have been looking. I’m currently a therapist before that I was teaching in a school.

In 2019 I will complete my nursing degree and qualify as a registered nurse. I plan to find a large General Practice to take me on as there is a lot of funding aimed at getting NQNs into practice nursing (1/3 of the current practice nurse workforce are eligible to retire now and yet primary care workload is expanding) but it still isn't considered by many as a first job.

Other option is apply for A&E, which is very different both work wise and the hours. Hospital work is 12.5 hour shifts, 3 or days a week. With rotations of nights. General practice would be more like a 9-5 job (though this is beginning to change) and no working Christmas day and bank holidays. Both work patterns have pros and cons and would have different impacts on our family life so this will have a bearing on where I choose to work.
Quite a lot of hard work to do between now and September though, need to keep reminding myself why I'm doing this!

Simply, to return to work after maternity leave and hopefully lose the dread that fills me every time I think about it.

I have a great job in the public sector - pays well, really flexible and I'm going back 4 days. I just need to remind myself of all of this.

I'm also 2 years into my Psychology degree so aim to finish the current module with a decent grade.

Retraining now and hope to start my own business and give up my current job, I do enjoy it but want to work my own hours.

I've really tried and failed to make a career change over the last couple of years due to a lack of opportunities where I live. DH and the DCs are happy so I've made the decision not to relocate. I'm now sucking it up and returning to teaching FT. It's not the workload that bothers me so much as the behaviour of so many pupils. I suppose my goal needs to be to develop a thick skin.

I want to be in a job that enables me to contribute to achieving the things we want as a family.

I’m applying for jobs that are completely new for me as well as things I have experience in. Something without too much paid childcare that I can do at weekends and / or during school hours within a nice team with a good manager would be ideal!

I like roles with some independence so I’m also looking at what I can do from home.
