Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Go to choice is now Mitchum Powder Fresh spray since giving it a try about four months ago, we used to buy Nivea but we found that it wasn't overly effective with smells and even the 'no marks' formula was staining clothes. I found it was better to make it all part of the 'getting ready' routine and make it a fun, extra step to the getting dressed process so putting deodorant on become part of it.

I usually go for fresh smells like powder as I find them less invasive and prefer the smell over anything else on the market. I have also found that the sprays last for longer and have a longer-lasting effect. The most important factors are neutralising smells, no marks and not overly expensive.

MipMipMip · 10/09/2018 13:13

I use Perspirex as I sweat a LOT. Its really effective but it leaves my under arms a bit sore so in the mornings I top up with dove, chosen for their moisturising. Any time the Perspirex is inefficient that combination seems to work.

I use the stick as I hate the sticky, waiting to dry feeling you get with roll ons. And spray seems not to work very well (although I do use it to stop my thoughts rubbing!).

Normal everyday deodorants don't work for me so I have no choice but to get the specialist ones.Sad

mollysmammy · 10/09/2018 13:52

What deodorant do you buy and why?
I use PitRok, but I also use Driclor at night after a bath (I have bad anxiety, which can cause me to sweat in meetings and certain situations - not great when it's a morning meeting or a day long event). My Daughter uses PitRok, although managed to smash it on the floor the other day. She does a lot of sports 12 active classes a week. It's natural which I like, my Dad actually gave me it as it was on a multi-buy (not sure if he's trying to tell me something... !

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one?
A natural one, but she's smashed it.

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it?
Not really, she saw Mummy using hers and wanted to, at the time I was using a scented one and she wanted to smell 'pretty'.

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick?
Roll on, I hate sprays as I have asthma and aerosols can trigger it occasionally, I find the creamy stick ones flake off.

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents?
Without, I prefer the sole scent to be my perfume.

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child?
Natural and not full of chemicals, plus not tested on animals.

What about anti-mark deodorants?
If I was wearing something dark and sleeveless yes, but otherwise it wouldn't make much of a difference. My partner used to use one though and the colour in it turned his dark tshirts white on the underarm...

Leicesterpiggott · 10/09/2018 14:33

I like the Dove solid stick... dh uses it too as it's the only one he doesn't get a rash from. Ds has just started using deodorant and I've bought him an aloe Vera roll on from the body shop as it's natural and gentle although I might need to get him something a bit more hardcore when he starts whiffing a bit more!

winewolfhowls · 10/09/2018 14:56

What deodorant do you buy and why? Whichever is on offer really but it is often dove.

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Roll on definitely. Sprays often not allowed in school these days.

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? I like a fresh smell like teatree rather than a sickly floral smell.

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? Cost!

What about anti-mark deodorants? I kind of assume most would be these days.

Feb2018mumma · 10/09/2018 15:18

I have the black and white Nivea one becuase the advert showed it wouldn't stain! I've worn black with the dove spray before and it's gone onto my clothes and I've had to change!

sweir1 · 10/09/2018 15:45

We bought ours deodorant recently as he was starting to smell. He was embarrassed and first but now swims in the stuff! I'm unsure what smell is worse.

sprinklesandsauce · 10/09/2018 15:53

I bought Dove for DD as I thought it seemed like the most sensitive one, she seems to be doing ok with it so far.

I use Mitchum unperfumed, other roll ons seems to give me a rash.

mooota1514 · 10/09/2018 15:58

I’m a long way off needing to think about this for my son, but I would probably use a natural product for as long as I could, and not give him something that will block his pores.

emmmaaa26 · 10/09/2018 16:01

I use whatever is on offer when I go shopping, I prefer a spray on but will give anything a try.

becky004 · 10/09/2018 16:25

DS sprays so much it makes me choke, he is autistic and for a long time we struggled with his personal hygiene now he goes overboard! He loves Lynx as he thinks the girls love it!

Gizlotsmum · 10/09/2018 16:52

I use what ever deodorant doesn’t mark my clothes. Currently using dove as got a freebie but normally supermarket own brand. My daughter uses Mitchem but we found that it wasn’t the deodorant that wasn’t lasting but the showergel caused her to smell. Swapping to soap has helped a lot!

For me a deodorant needs to be reasonably priced, non marking and preferably not tested on animals

abitoflight · 10/09/2018 17:13

I don't like unnecessary clutter so share antiperspirant with DH. I have done this for 20+ years. So for me, it's usually right guard.
DD's use Dove or Nivea depending on what's on offer. They also take roll on to school for PE as get fed up with people asking to use it which they don't with roll ons 😂

sunshinewey · 10/09/2018 18:01

My 14 year old has just realised that deodorant stops smells, so he is really getting into it right now, for all the kissing he is probably doing....

LauraMMM · 10/09/2018 18:04

My daughter is a little young for this yet however I use Michum Powder Deodorant, I find its the only one that doesn't leave marks and keeps me dry and prevents odour. I am a nervous person at times so I can be prone to sweating with an odour so I found it really difficult growing up and knowing what product actually works as they all advertise they same. So when my daughter is old enough we will try ones that are kind to skin as she can be sensitive but also has a nice fragrance for her. It is important that the deodorant lasts all day, has a pleasant smell and doesn't leave any marks especially on white shirts which she wears for school!

lovemyflipflops · 10/09/2018 18:12

What deodorant do you buy and why? Dove - but only when it's on offer at my supermarket - then I stock up (I also take it to my sister who lives in Holland - she loves it and cannot buy it over there) - so it's a family think.
Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? No I think Dove is suitable for all of my family, so he has his own for sport and school.
Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Yes, we had a chat about personal hygiene.
Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? No preference - they both work fine - just never aerosol

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? I like any Jasmine or green tea fragrance.

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? No artificial additives or aluminium

What about anti-mark deodorants? - prefer one which does not leave marks.

Sunflower321 · 10/09/2018 18:17

Both myself and my dd use aluminium free deodorants, as there have been studies linking aluminium with breast cancer.

The choice in the UK sadly isn't as great as elsewhere so I often buy these deodorants abroad.

Sid98 · 10/09/2018 18:59

i only get the cheap sprays

EvilRingahBitch · 10/09/2018 19:39

The age at which DC develop body odour varies widely and also sometimes comes and goes. I’ve had eight year old friends of DCs round for play dates who’ve been distinctly whiffy at the end of the day, DC who’ve gone through phases of BO at nine and then stopped again before I got around to buying deodorant for them, and also DC who’ve reached their teens with absolutely no need for deodorant at all.

In terms of what I buy them: roll ons, definitely not spray cans, unscented but with a decent amount of strength. Adolescent anti-perspirant needs to be able to stand up against adolescent sweat, especially if they’re doing PE. Currently using Mitchum which seems to be doing a decent job.

ohlittlepea · 10/09/2018 20:12

I use Nivea or Dove and prefer roll ons but I think the amount of plastic involved is a shame if like to move to a plastic free deodorant maybe like a bar type thing? Wish Dove would bring out something like that 😊

andreaca · 10/09/2018 21:16

I use a roll on ( whatever is on special) and impulse on top, my hubby uses Mitchum roll on as he`s an outside grafter, and this was the only deoderant that kept BO at bay. My kids use sprays as they think roll on is for old people. (like me), Lynx for my son cause his mates use it and normally any ladies spray for my daughter, as long as it smells nice.

magentastardust · 10/09/2018 21:28

I personally prefer the cream deodorants, however recently have noticed (as I wear a lot of black) they seem to be leaving stains on my clothes so I have reluctantly gone back to spray deodorants and I have noticed the difference.

I do sometimes use the maximum deodorants that you apply at nights such as Perspirex or tripledry if I have a holiday or event coming up to ensure that I don't end up with sweat marks. I don't like to use these too often though.

When my daughter started using deodorant I wanted something that was sensitive on her skin, we are much more protective over what we put on our child's skin than on our own!

petalflowercherrybomb · 10/09/2018 21:29

I have used Dove in the past and liked it. These days I confess to buying whatever's on offer. In my sweatier teenage days I used Mitchum.

chilledteacher · 10/09/2018 21:32

I use dove or sure, usually the invisible ones.
DS (13) uses Lynx- of any variety! This currently has the double effect of being the air "freshener" for the entire house as he is a somewhat enthusiastic sprayer. 😂

ladygoingGaga · 10/09/2018 21:38

I use Mitchum roll on, as I find I need extra strength, usually end up at the gym at end of day after work, and regular roll ons just don’t keep me smelling as fresh.

My DS is 12 and likes a deodorant spray, does not seem to be fussy as to brand, and to be honest I buy what is on offer.
