Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My son had a roll on to use at first when he was about 10 but said it was too sticky - he now uses dove for men every day as part of his routine!

MrsFrTedCrilly · 10/09/2018 22:20

We use a roll on deodorant here usually Mitchum.
Ds is at the stage now where he needs to use deodorant, like many others upthread I have explained that nothing is an alternative to showering daily and hygiene however much he would like it to be Grin

Treaclespongeandcustard · 10/09/2018 22:53

My child isn’t old enough to wear deodorant yet. I wear anything I find in the bathroom. My husband likes nice toiletries and I’m happy to share whatever he brings home Grin

dadshere · 10/09/2018 23:14

I always wear men's as it stops me sweating completely. DD used to steal our deoderant and hide it because she didn't like me smelling like daddy!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 10/09/2018 23:21

What deodorant do you buy and why? I use dove spray or dove cream. I love the smell. To me it's the smell of clean. I wish though there wasn't so much plastic with it. (As with all) however dove men doesn't work for my husband. It seems to smell strange on him and doesn't last the day.

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? I will probably buy the same as mine or whatever is on offer

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it?Will do when necessary but I think the fashion for kids at primary school to start all that unless medically necessary is absurd.

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Stick or spray. Roll on is annoyinly wet amd claggy

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? Dove original

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? Smell and longevity

What about anti-mark deodorants? They're nice but not essential

PashleyB · 10/09/2018 23:24

I'm afraid I hate sweating and no matter how much in theory an anti perspirant is bad for you I prefer it. I tend to use Sure maximum protection these days but tend to swap every few months to try a different brand

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 10/09/2018 23:30

I always use the roll on liquidy one from Nivea called pearl and beauty, I love it as it smells nice, lasts all day and I’ve had some allergic reactions to other deodorants but this one has never been a problem. And it was only 95p this evening from asda - absolute bargain.

I much prefer roll ons to sprays and you can travel with them in hand luggage which is much easier

Fanjango · 11/09/2018 00:09

I tend to use one of the black/white ranges as a habitual wearer of black the white marks from other types are more than annoying. I have 4 kids. They all use spray deodorants and have from the start. More than one of my children have asd and sensory issues so quick drying is a must. Unfortunately schools won't allow spray deodorants at school or on school trips which can cause issues as roll Ons still are too long drying, tending to remain sticky for too long. We have tried the sticks but they aren't keen on the feeling as it's more cloying. It would be nice if a powder dispenser or similar could do the job to avoid the need for aerosols or that dampness of roll Ons.

AlliKaneErikson · 11/09/2018 02:08

I use a spray; the brand depends on what’s on offer, but it has to be a nice, fresh scent (eg cotton) and must be one that doesn’t leave white marks. I always feel that a spray gives longer protection. I don’t like the smell of lots of men’s spray deodorants, for some reason.
My DS has just started secondary school so I’ve bought him a roll-on (not that he’s a ‘sweaty’ child) but answering this had made me realise I haven’t really explained how/why to use it!

mollymoo818 · 11/09/2018 08:55

Funnily enough I use DOVE and my children are always wanting to use it too. I have no doubt that my DS will be wanting to wear something strong and obnoxious such as Lynx when he is older because that is what I always smell on teen boys. I think it is more important for girls to have something gentle because they will want to start shaving when they are teens and you don't want anything that is going to irritate their skin whereas with boys they can just spray and go with pretty much anything.

Ffeyone · 11/09/2018 10:41

I use Mitchum as i need something to keep me fresh during gruelling long shifts and find this second to none.

jazzitup · 11/09/2018 10:48

I tend to use the gel type, works for me.

katiewalters · 11/09/2018 12:50

I buy know mitchums deodorant. I sweat quite abit, and thats the only one that helps keep that under controlled. They have different fragrance ones as well. Recently got my aon his first deodrant. We went for lynx as they have a variety of different fragrances, and also because they had ones that weren't antiperspirants, as we didnt want that. This one was a deodorant and body spray

wintertime94 · 11/09/2018 14:26

We always use SURE deodorant, it has always been reliable for us.

HowsAnnie25 · 11/09/2018 14:55

I buy a cheap one in the Winter and a more pricey dry stick thing for the Summer! I don't even think I sweat that much but most deodorants don't seem to work!! Last Summer my daughter did start needing a deodorant (she was nearly 8) but this Summer she hasn't needed to use one very much, no idea why!! We used a Children's Salt of the Earth crystal one for her, she squirmed a lot as she is way too ticklish!!

devito92 · 11/09/2018 15:46

My son is led by popular brand Lynx as its importrant to him which can he has. i tend to buy the best deal in the supermarket at the time

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 11/09/2018 16:22

DD and I both love the Dove Cucumber and Green Tea roll-on (or at least I do when it's not too hot or I'm not too busy because in my perimenopausal state I find it doesn't always cut the mustard!). It's a lovely fresh smell without being too perfumed in a talc way IYSWIM.

DS on the other hand, as a young teen, prefers the usual Lynx or Adidas type - roll-on for after a shower, aerosol for those "boosts" that stink the house out

AsleepAllDay · 11/09/2018 16:26

Bionsen is a god send - really great for being an aluminium free roll on. Rarely have any complaints and it's readily available in Boots

vickyors · 11/09/2018 16:58

I buy a Mitchum stick which I find gives me the best protection. I find sprays too overpowering, and I don't feel they work as well. I like someone that immediately can have clothes over it, as I'm always in a rush. Also, I'm a teacher, and I am quite naturally sweaty, so I have to know that I'm not going to be the teacher who's known because of their sweat patches!

I can have sensitive skin, and actually, I've found Mitchum hasn't exacerbated this..

YourMilkshakeIsBetterThanMine · 11/09/2018 17:23

I alternate between Dove and Sure roll on depending on Tesco offers at the time. I like both. It needs to be a roll on and any Dove scent apart from Original.

My DH will only wear Dove Men Care spray. DC aren't old enough yet.

bevmichelle47 · 11/09/2018 17:42

Love the Dove range, especially the roll on's, our little one has been watching us put it on after a bath/shower & is now trying it for herself. I find them easier and more gentle than a spray, especially on sensitive skin.

Ranita · 11/09/2018 18:41

Older son has hit puberty and now needs deodorant bless him! He uses dove men+care which smells lovely (clean comfort).

DillieDoily · 11/09/2018 19:26

My DC are too young to need deodorant but the only deodorant I will use is the invisible solid cream stick one as it just works for me! Wish they did it in the original Dove smell though as I love it!

SirVixofVixHall · 11/09/2018 20:10

I buy a mix of ones, usually a stick or roll on. I only use products with no aluminium. At the moment I’m using a stick packaged in cardboard, no plastic at all, it is the Ben and Anna stick. I also have a Tisserand roll on.
When my older daughter started using deodorant I bought her the Missy roll on, which is made for girls from aged 8. Now she uses a mix of my roll ons, Bionsen stick, or a spray . The spray she has is the Soft and Gentle 0% aluminium , she likes it, but it has a pretty overwhelming smell, I have to open the bathroom window after she’s used it as it makes us all cough.
My smallest daughter is eleven and has just started Secondary school. She has also just started wanting to use deodorant and she is using a roll on from Ushuaia- Hibiscus Bio, it is French, I bought it with some other French toiletries. She chooses by smell, so I have a variety and she picks whichever she thinks smells nicest.
At their age I had a fab lemon scented deodorant that I loved, but it was discontinued , and I’ve never found a similar one. Both girls would like a deodorant to either smell delicious (fruity seems their favourite) but not overpowering, or to have no scent at all. I feel the same.

Tentomidnight · 11/09/2018 20:23

Both I and teen DD use a Dove stick. I just bought her one like mine when I explained to her that she needed to start using deodorant after her showers.
She has sensory issues and wouldn’t use a spray or wet roll on, or anything with a strong scent.
I need to introduce my younger DC to the idea of deodorant soon, and again will buy a Dove stick deodorant.
