The chance to spend time away from home and in a new environment is a treat that many of us look forward to. Occasionally, however, we can forget to take everything back home with us once the holiday is over. HomeAway would love to hear about the strangest things that you have left behind or found from former guests in a holiday home.

Here is what HomeAway has to say: “HomeAway offers more than 2 million unique places to stay in over 190 countries around the world, from villas to cottages, from beach houses to tree houses, from mountain cabins to even castles! Over one-third of HomeAway's nearly 1.5 million online bookable listings are now instantly bookable, with no wait for confirmation. The holiday home expert’s mission is to provide families and groups of travellers with the perfect match holiday home to create unforgettable memories together. Not only do holiday homes provide excellent value for travelling families and group of friends, booking a whole house also guarantees more space and flexibility than a hotel or resorts.

Ever wondered how much your home could earn for you? HomeAway is here to help you learn what it takes to rent your home and invite travellers in for unforgettable experiences. Click here to find out more.”

Have you ever found unusual items in the fridge? Maybe you managed to leave just one shoe in the wardrobe? Or your underwear in a strange location? Perhaps you’ve even found something as random as a walking stick or a diary? Share them all on the thread below...no matter how strange!

Everyone who comments on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I've only ever seen socks left behind

poopoopoo · 12/05/2018 15:36

We stayed in an old cottage near the sea in Devon. Whilst there we heard a story of a previous owner who had hung himself in the garden! When walking in the garden we found lots of very old Bovril jars! I don't think there is any connection....

rosie154 · 12/05/2018 15:37

My friend left all her underwear behind, had to ask the male owner to retrieve the items and post them back to her.

I stayed in a caravan once that didn't get cleared out properly from the previous people staying there. We found 1 shoe (how do you not realise you are missing a shoe?!), a nearly full case of beer in the fridge and some unopened snacks in the cupboard :D

Rosesb3 · 12/05/2018 15:54

A plate of cheese and biscuits were under the bed :P

We once stayed in a holiday cottage stuffed to the rafters with knick knacks and found a file where the owners had documented the history of them - where they had come from, etc. I was expecting a quiz at the end of the week.

I think the guests before us had been on a stag or hen weekend as there were a few interesting inflatables left behind in cupboards! :)

Catmadroo · 12/05/2018 16:16

left behind a multi plug we used to charge our electricals, I thought my friend had packed and she thought same of me, worse thing was I borrowed it from another friend

MSHGW · 12/05/2018 16:33

I left my Tamagotchi behind, after pestering my parents to buy me one all week (obviously this was in the 1990's)!

Emilygage1982 · 12/05/2018 16:50

froomeonthebroom · 12/05/2018 16:52

We went to a house in Exmouth on holiday 2 years running. It had some strange things but I think the most random was a jelly cook book ....

MrRichTea · 12/05/2018 17:20

A half eaten plastic bat

emiliejw · 12/05/2018 17:28

A miniature statue of the Virgin Mary hidden amongst a storage box full of lilos and arm-bands.

Minnibix · 12/05/2018 17:52

We always stock up with every medicine you could possibly need to take on holiday. Plasters, bandages, eye bath, corn plasters (well you never know) Aspirin, paracetamol, things to make you go and things to stop you going. One year we left our medicine box behind, what the new holiday makers made of that I am not at all sure :D

Happened not too long ago - we arrived at a splendid holiday homes n Cornwall and all looked superbly clean, until we entered the bathroom, where someone had taken a 'number two' inside the shower enclosure and just left it everywhere! We were not impressed!

sm2012 · 12/05/2018 18:16

I left my cheese wedge shaped under the bump pillow when I was pregnant with my third daughter! They must have wondered what it was!

renas · 12/05/2018 18:30

Left my special porridge scoop in a holiday bungalow. Re booked following year and it was in the draw so I took it home.

billybear · 12/05/2018 18:36

feefeegabor · 12/05/2018 18:40

My daughter was very keen on a small spider plant she had been given at nursery when she was little. Sadly "spidey" was left behind at our holiday cottage in Wales. Goodness knows what the next guests made of it!

Katieraventimeout · 12/05/2018 18:40

Ky jelly in the bathroom of a holiday home i stayed at 😅😅

foxessocks · 12/05/2018 18:41

I've never found anything interesting or left anything more interesting than my childhood toy which they kindly posted back!

Blainalass · 12/05/2018 18:49

In our bedroom, at the top of the steepest stairs I've seen, in a B+B in France, a lidded bucket - the only toilet was the outside loo 4 floors down, the bucket had been used a previous occupant and not emptied. For the record, both number ones and two.

AnimalAddict · 12/05/2018 18:57
