The chance to spend time away from home and in a new environment is a treat that many of us look forward to. Occasionally, however, we can forget to take everything back home with us once the holiday is over. HomeAway would love to hear about the strangest things that you have left behind or found from former guests in a holiday home.

Here is what HomeAway has to say: “HomeAway offers more than 2 million unique places to stay in over 190 countries around the world, from villas to cottages, from beach houses to tree houses, from mountain cabins to even castles! Over one-third of HomeAway's nearly 1.5 million online bookable listings are now instantly bookable, with no wait for confirmation. The holiday home expert’s mission is to provide families and groups of travellers with the perfect match holiday home to create unforgettable memories together. Not only do holiday homes provide excellent value for travelling families and group of friends, booking a whole house also guarantees more space and flexibility than a hotel or resorts.

Ever wondered how much your home could earn for you? HomeAway is here to help you learn what it takes to rent your home and invite travellers in for unforgettable experiences. Click here to find out more.”

Have you ever found unusual items in the fridge? Maybe you managed to leave just one shoe in the wardrobe? Or your underwear in a strange location? Perhaps you’ve even found something as random as a walking stick or a diary? Share them all on the thread below...no matter how strange!

Everyone who comments on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

We recently went to a caravan in Blackpool and there was a stethoscope in the kitchen drawer!

rutsan · 12/05/2018 10:28

We stayed in a cottage in Somerset and someone had left a scooby doo teddy behind. The owner lived next door so we went there to give it to him. He came back and said he had phoned the owners and they didn't want it back so he gave it to my children. Funny thing is my dog looks like scrappy so I now have a scooby doo and scrappy doo!!

We left behind a carved wooden frog Grandad had made for our son - Grandad has never forgiven us - it is brought up everytime someone mentions Frogs - "wonder where he is now" is always said (did anyone out there find him please?)

When I used to commute to London I stayed two nights in a hotel. They had accidentally only had me booked in for one night so when I returned on the second night my stuff was gone. When it was returned there were some really silly items missing and the crucifix off my thong was gone!

A love letter

shellywkd · 12/05/2018 11:12

We found a really smelly wet shoe in the bed once. Never went back to that resort as the beds were clearly not changed and had to get them to change the bedding before I let my daughter sleep in there was disgusting.

Bookcase full of books in german, even though owners english, and cottage in england, and advertised on english website

Helsbells68 · 12/05/2018 11:18

I always check under beds for left items while staying at a hotel in Cusco, Peru I found a sign that said 'Yes we clean under the beds too' :)

Cashy17 · 12/05/2018 11:32

I left my hair dryer behind once, we called and asked if we could pay the postage and packaging cost to get it back as was cheaper than buying another but apparently they couldn't find it. ..was rather disappointed.

Ferryfairy · 12/05/2018 11:34

I left my slightly naughty apron behind the door in our lodge in Wales

lotte321 · 12/05/2018 11:48

We stayed in a lovely holiday home one year in Sussex.

Laying in bed on the first night, looked up to see a bread roll wedged into the lamp shade on the ceiling.

Strange people in this land!

Sammimuscles · 12/05/2018 12:03

My moon Cup 😂

xcxcsophiexcxc · 12/05/2018 12:18

Nothing strange ! I didn't leave it in a home but in the taxi I left my cuddly toy called fluffy.
I was distraught.

andywedge · 12/05/2018 12:30

A poo in the loo

holey · 12/05/2018 12:33

Found:
I once helped MIL clean some holiday chalets she owned on a Saturday change over day. Nothing unusual to report but the level of household rubbish left strewn around and not cleaned away staggered me. I'm not the most house proud of people by any means but how anyone feels it is okay to leave all their rubbish on floors/tables/worktops etc when leaving is beyond me. I know it is a holiday, but seriously!?

Left:
My son left his shoes in a hotel room once. The only ones he'd brought. We'd instructed them all to get ready before leaving, thought we'd checked everywhere was empty, went down in the lift, settled up at reception, went outside about to get in a taxi with luggage etc before realising that DS1 aged about 6, was standing on the pavement in just his socks!

tia3456 · 12/05/2018 12:45

Not really strange but annoying I left literally all the children's beach toys in the caravan, only realised when we got home

sallyhartley · 12/05/2018 13:20

Toenail clippings 😶 yes yuk haha

sootyo · 12/05/2018 13:28

Left the plug and flex of a travel kettle in a hotel in New York. Frustrating , as it was a multi destination holiday, so no more in room cuppas for the rest of the holiday.

cmountford08 · 12/05/2018 13:28

Luckily nothing too strange but I once left a lovely Ted Baker clutch handbag behind...luckily they were kind enough to post it to me so we got reunited in the end!

happysouls · 12/05/2018 13:29

I don't think I've ever found anything other than dust and I've never left anything because I'm very very careful! The strangest thing I've found in a hotel room is a solitary pube on the plastic drinking cup in the bathroom of an otherwise spotless room! eek hahaha!

janeyf1 · 12/05/2018 13:49

I haven't found anything strange and certainly nothing useful but I did leave a nearly new pair of trainers behind by mistake where I forgot they were under the bed

glenka · 12/05/2018 13:51

we once found a bag full of dirty washing and it smelt horrible which was not a very nice start to the holiday

lizd31 · 12/05/2018 13:58

The most disgusting was a dried up chicken skin on the bedroom floor

meepmoop79 · 12/05/2018 14:14

The strangest thing that we found was some lower jaw dentures!
