The chance to spend time away from home and in a new environment is a treat that many of us look forward to. Occasionally, however, we can forget to take everything back home with us once the holiday is over. HomeAway would love to hear about the strangest things that you have left behind or found from former guests in a holiday home.

Here is what HomeAway has to say: “HomeAway offers more than 2 million unique places to stay in over 190 countries around the world, from villas to cottages, from beach houses to tree houses, from mountain cabins to even castles! Over one-third of HomeAway's nearly 1.5 million online bookable listings are now instantly bookable, with no wait for confirmation. The holiday home expert’s mission is to provide families and groups of travellers with the perfect match holiday home to create unforgettable memories together. Not only do holiday homes provide excellent value for travelling families and group of friends, booking a whole house also guarantees more space and flexibility than a hotel or resorts.

Ever wondered how much your home could earn for you? HomeAway is here to help you learn what it takes to rent your home and invite travellers in for unforgettable experiences. Click here to find out more.”

Have you ever found unusual items in the fridge? Maybe you managed to leave just one shoe in the wardrobe? Or your underwear in a strange location? Perhaps you’ve even found something as random as a walking stick or a diary? Share them all on the thread below...no matter how strange!

Everyone who comments on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

In Thailand we found a lizard in our room. I thought it was really cute.

diamondsandrose · 13/05/2018 15:26

Hotel in Edinburgh down the side of the bed.

2 adult magazines, one was called "Black legs" and consisted entirely of photos of black women's legs in various poses wearing coloured tights and stockings, many of them sitting on the loo with said coloured tights round the ankles. Niche!

Marg2k8 · 13/05/2018 16:01

Nothing unusual. Have left behind ordinary stuff such as my umbrella

Nicole1709 · 13/05/2018 16:38

When I was younger, my mum let me take a whole suitcase filled with teddy bears. I remember being so sad because I took 40, but I could only find 39 to bring home!

We turned up at our cottage to find a little lamb in the garden!! It had escaped from the nearest farm and took quite a while to get it back home again.

Lauzipop1 · 13/05/2018 19:13

I once stayed in a place that had a Boyzone magazine and photos of Boyzone on the coffee table. Bit random.

claza93 · 13/05/2018 20:03

Always leaving behind tooth brushes etc! We have discovered some weird and wonderful books at various holiday cottages!

shewhomustbeEbayed · 13/05/2018 20:20

A few years ago my OH and I rented a farmhouse in Wales, must have been the first time they’d rented it out as they had left all their personal possessions in the house ( clothes in the wardrobe and chest of drawers, food in the storecupboard, spirits on the drinks tray )
The owners actually lived in a house up the lane, I’m not sure someone hadn’t died in the house recently as it had a spooky feel and I refused to go upstairs to the loo on my own as you had to pass a bedroom with a rocking chair which I’d
seen rocking of it’s own accord.

We once walked into a caravan we was renting in Aberystwyth and there was a bird inside , I have never moved so quick in all my life .we managed to get it out safely but it was a big shock to open the door too ,especially with a lo

mollymoo818 · 14/05/2018 08:20

We must just be very lucky when we have stayed in rental homes because they are always immaculate. I on the other hand am always leaving things behind. When I get home I realise I have left knickers, books, make-up and all sorts even though I go round and check before we leave!

LilMadAgain · 14/05/2018 09:31

I've only ever holidayed in the UK, hotels, b and bs, Butlins, caravans etc but I have the most extraordinary ability to find old bibles in almost every place I've stayed. It's incredible, what are the chances?

jazzitup · 14/05/2018 10:39

I was lucky, I found a pair of knickers on the headboard.
Nice way to start a family holiday lol.

Ranita · 14/05/2018 11:03

Found bottle tops in a wardrobe drawer, about half a dozen of them. No idea why they were left there.Just odd!

cluckyhen · 14/05/2018 12:53

We managed to leave a passport wallet with id card and credit cards in Portugal in the safe - the hotel never found it though??
