With laundry stacked high and always increasing, it can be tempting to break even the most basic of laundry rules in order to keep on top of the task. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about the rules you implement (or ignore!) when you’re doing the laundry.

Here’s what Fairy has to say: “We want to know what’s important to you. Have you found a way to save time? A way to get the best stain removal? A way to keep clothes huggably soft? Or even just a way to not lose matching socks! We would love to hear your tricks of the trade.”

What’s your perspective on laundry rules? Either way, Fairy Non Bio wants to know. Do you obey temperature regulations or simply stick everything in at 40? Perhaps you’re the kind of person who avoids overfilling and never fails to air-dry fine fabrics. Or, maybe you fill the machine to the brim and adopt a one size fits all approach to drying that would make manufacturers weep. Whatever they may be, divulge your laundry indiscretions.

Share the rules that you follow and those you ignore on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

Follow separating light and dark so the lights don't go dingy.
Wash everything at 40 with a slosh of basic disinfectant if it could be harbouring nasties.

Otherwise, I ignore pretty much every other rule, including "Hand Wash"/ "Dry Clean" only.

mummymel19 · 23/04/2018 21:31

Always follow the clothes instructions when washing

bc1616 · 23/04/2018 21:59

I always do a delicates wash when it says dry cleaning only, it always works (but don't blame me if it doesn't work for you!)

baconbap · 23/04/2018 22:36

Nearly everything apart from towels goes in at 40

Nicole1709 · 23/04/2018 22:50

I don't even know how to do a delicates wash. The only things I split are whites and darks.

Dessallara · 23/04/2018 23:17

Never put dark colours with whites

hutchina1986 · 23/04/2018 23:29

It all goes in at 30 degrees and I hope for the best, if it's handwash only it goes to my mum

BrendasUmbrella · 23/04/2018 23:51

Separating colours - if I have a colour catcher sheet handy I don't worry about it...

jamielmdjs · 24/04/2018 00:29

I HATE it when Sarah does the wash. Her idea of a full load is about 1/3 of mine.

Since baby Damon arrived, it feels like i'm constantly doing washing but it helps if I make sure the machine is creaking at the hinges because i've filled it so much.

40 for everything, lights and darks.

I do struggle with the instruction 'WASH DARK COLOURS SEPARATELY' when written on the label of something that is say, grey. What am I being told here - is this item dark, and i've to wash it separately from lights, or is this item light and i've to keep it away from darks? Still baffled so I ignore it.

snare · 24/04/2018 06:24

i always follow the rules whether the clothes should go in the dryer or not

poppypants · 24/04/2018 06:45

Always wash whites separate, towels separate on a hot wash, i also use soap nuts which great for the environment.

Bellroyd · 24/04/2018 06:48

I always leave plenty of space for clothes to circulate in the drum and I never use more washing medium than is suggested on the container - often less.

MAT12 · 24/04/2018 06:57

I do alot of different washes, whites, darks, colours whites with a hint of colour, creams etc. im especially careful with my whites though as i do not like whites to have a hint of blue/pink/green etc. So i make sure anything with a slight colour goes into a different wash

vincenta · 24/04/2018 07:32

I like to wash on 40 degrees because all wash comes out nice and clean.I wash my whites seperately and try to dry them outside in sunny day.I use colour catcher sheet when I wash colourful clothes and hope for luck.

piggypoo · 24/04/2018 08:00

I sort colours, I think it's pretty suicidal if that rule is ignored, but a lot of my Dry Clean Only clothes, I put on a delicates wash, and they are absolutely fine, I have never had any problems with doing that and have never lost any good clothes, touch wood!

alshaz1982 · 24/04/2018 08:08

with three kids i just like to make washing as easier as possible... so i pretty much always just chuck everything in on a quickwash at 30/40'c rarely have a full lot of whites so it all goes in together too.. i really don't understand all the fancy cycles on my machine at all..

JBH316 · 24/04/2018 09:34

I break 'em all!

All colours gets chucked in together - I don't have enough white stuff to justify a separate wash
I fill the machine as much as I can to avoid having to do 2 loads
Everything goes in the tumble drier
Everything gets washed at the same temperature
I do wash stuff inside out as I read somewhere that it prevented bobbling/fading etc but not sure it's that effective

AutumnElla · 24/04/2018 10:33

Whites with a scoop of vanish and towels/bedding at 60, everything else at 40. I don't wait for full loads as it gets hard to keep on top of the sorting and ironing, I just wash it when I have time on my day off.

lottiegirl · 24/04/2018 10:38

i dont worry about dry clean on hubbys suit, just cold wash comes out fine

lovelyluckylass · 24/04/2018 10:53

I always mix my colours lights & darks & Ive never had a run. However I never put things in the dryer that says they cant go in.

mishknight · 24/04/2018 11:06

I've put numerous, 'dry clean only' items in the washing machine and they have come out fine. Was almost tempted to put my wedding dress in the machine to avoid the extortionate cost of getting it clean professionally, in the end I just sponged it over and used stain remover to get the worse grass stains out

hann24 · 24/04/2018 11:20

I try to wash delicates on a delicate wash, but everything else just goes in at 40, unless it's towels or the bedding - they go in at 60 to make sure they're extra clean :)

ha2el · 24/04/2018 11:34

If I buy garments that state 'DRY CLEAN ONLY' from the charity shop, for the first wash I will put them on a gentle wash and cross my fingers. I'm usually OK!

Smellophant87 · 24/04/2018 11:59

I'm fairly rubbish with laundry rules, I just keep the babies clothes separate from the rest of our washing.

cathyov · 24/04/2018 12:57

My washes seem to be light or dark and always at 30 degrees and with a colour catcher added for good measure (in a net with smaller items or items that need protecting as these sheets can get stuck in the pipes etc.). The only exceptions to this are a towel wash on 60 degrees.
