With laundry stacked high and always increasing, it can be tempting to break even the most basic of laundry rules in order to keep on top of the task. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about the rules you implement (or ignore!) when you’re doing the laundry.

Here’s what Fairy has to say: “We want to know what’s important to you. Have you found a way to save time? A way to get the best stain removal? A way to keep clothes huggably soft? Or even just a way to not lose matching socks! We would love to hear your tricks of the trade.”

What’s your perspective on laundry rules? Either way, Fairy Non Bio wants to know. Do you obey temperature regulations or simply stick everything in at 40? Perhaps you’re the kind of person who avoids overfilling and never fails to air-dry fine fabrics. Or, maybe you fill the machine to the brim and adopt a one size fits all approach to drying that would make manufacturers weep. Whatever they may be, divulge your laundry indiscretions.

Share the rules that you follow and those you ignore on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

My favourite is to ignore the Dry Clean only - it usually goes in a delicates hand wash mode and touch wood i haven't ruined anything yet.

sammylea80 · 17/04/2018 20:08

I always wash underwear on a hand wash or the lacy bits just get ruined, I do use the dettol anti bacterial stuff in with it though.

smileyfacechocolatebutton · 17/04/2018 20:20

Lights and darks washed separately on 40. Bedding at 60. Delicates / handwash items go on those cycles in the machine. Use non-bio liquid as biological makes me itch. Everything tumble dried except delicates unless I’m home on a sunny day! Used to be an ironing freak but realised there’s no real need to do vests, pants and pyjamas ☺️ and freed up hours each week!

ladygoingGaga · 17/04/2018 21:03

First rule is everyone’s does their own washing, with family of 5 and all involved in sports it is an essential.

Other rule is everyone has an allocate day to wash bedding, and if you miss it - tough.

Our very nice machine has all sorts of settings, yet we only use the quicker daily wash settings, and never used a 60 degree wash Blush
If we didn’t the machine would never be off.

Apricots17 · 17/04/2018 22:41

Don't overfill, stick everything on quickwash and stick some laundry cleanser in each wash. I'm addicted to it as I like knowing it will kill any bacteria on clothes. Great for OHs stinky armpits on his tops! Really works!

starlingsintheslipstream · 17/04/2018 22:54

I'm a slattern really. Everything gets split into either light or dark and gets washed at 40.

itsali · 17/04/2018 23:00

I don't wash anything above 40 degrees.

KittyKat88 · 17/04/2018 23:28

I do half-loads at 30 because it only takes 20 minutes, and I never worry about separating the colours from the whites. I think I've only had a couple of boo-boos with a red item of clothing and white school socks that went pink, but nothing else.

tubbyj · 18/04/2018 01:25

everything in one wash whatever the label says inc most dry clean only

createbeauty · 18/04/2018 08:21

I wash light colours together and dark colours together. That's about it, lol.

mushyhead · 18/04/2018 10:27

I have no hard rules, but try to separate whites from other colours and do towels on a hot wash. If I dont have enough to fill a load, my rules are abandoned and everything goes together.

prettybird · 18/04/2018 11:52

I ignore care labels. You can wash silk on a 40 low spin wash - which us what most of my washing gets done at (old awaking machine so that's actually the lowest temperature it washes at!)

White cotton gets done separately on a 60C cotton/poly cotton cycle (I do like my white bedlinen Wink). White towels ditto.

Stopped using fabric conditioner about 3 years ago - have not noticed the difference.

If something says handwash only, I usually ignore it unless it is a complex hand knit.

Only things I don't wash and do take to the dry cleaners are expensive lined items of clothing like suits, coats, evening dress and kilt.

clary · 18/04/2018 13:27

I wash towels at 60 and sometimes bedding. Everything else at 40 (not sure if that breaks a rule!)

I sort colours and whites but draw the line at dark/light colours - I need the ocean washing sooner!

As soon as I can I peg out. In December if I think it'll dry. Pegs have to match each other and match or tone with the clothes. This is tricky for black things!

clary · 18/04/2018 13:44

Meant to add I hand wash bras and woollens but, bizarrely, machine wash some dry clean only items eg a polyester shift dress,, why wouldn't I wash that??

RhubarbAndMustard · 18/04/2018 21:09

I separate 'lights' and 'darks' but that's pretty much it. Fill to 3/4's full, set to 40 and quick wash everything. Only very, very delicates get hand washed.

I love line dried clothes so everything on the line if sunny enough. If not it's on the airer or for heavy items, on top of the stair bannisters- it's the warmest place and clothes dry quickest here.

IKnowWhenThatHotlineBling · 18/04/2018 21:46

I fill that machine as quick as possible. I do whites on a high temperature and chuck everything else in togther on a 40 wash! xx

rainbowhaggis · 18/04/2018 22:05

I wash whites only with whites and I never overload the machine... however. I never do handwash, if it shrinks it goes out. I always do an eco wash no matter how grimy things are and if the kids have tidied up their bedrooms by putting everything on the floor?.... i just fold it or iron it and put it straight back into their washed laundry... oh yes , I do... :D

vickibee · 19/04/2018 06:24

I wash whites separately on a 60 wash with a scoop of vanish to get a brilliant look, all other washing gets a basic wash. Where possible I hang outside as I love my clothing to smell of fresh air especially bedding, it feels like you are going to bed in a summer meadow. I also ignore dry clean only.

rhinosuze · 19/04/2018 07:24

I ignore hand wash only! Also I must admit to mixing colours

merlymerly · 19/04/2018 10:11

I don't do 'hand washing' so everything gets put in the washing machine (obviously with the most appropriate setting) and fingers get crossed!

NutElla5x · 19/04/2018 11:59

Apart from denim and one red top that I know does run lights and darks get bunged in together on a 40 wash.Towels, tea towels and bedding all washed at 60 and everything line dried as much as possible.

Dannicalifornia · 19/04/2018 12:42

Wash whites and colours together! I do add a colour catcher though.

lexy2009 · 19/04/2018 13:40

Everything on a quick wash unless it’s really dirty. No fabric Conditioner just vinegar. Put my washing on the line as the sun gets rid of stains and if it’s windy it doesn’t need ironed

ToffeeNosed · 19/04/2018 13:54

I usually wash anything on "mixed fabrics" or "fast wash" programme at 40 or 60.

My husband is more dilligent and fusses over colours / bio / non-bio & selects correct settings and temperature, measures exact etc.

To be honest I don't really know all the machine settings and bio non-bio stuff, I think one has bleach in and one doesn't, also it isn't clear on the bottle if it is bio or non-bio so I just chuck it in, I don't measure the liquid, I just put a "glug" in the drawer or ball.
I always use dryer sheets but am militant about getting it out as soon as it's stopped because I detest Ironing. If things come out badly creased I hang it up at the end of the bath for the shower to steam it but if it is still bad I will put it in the wash again.
I have even wondered about using my wallpaper steamer to get creases I hate Ironing that much.

jen1984j · 19/04/2018 16:50

I always wash my socks in a pillowcase so i dont lose them
