With laundry stacked high and always increasing, it can be tempting to break even the most basic of laundry rules in order to keep on top of the task. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about the rules you implement (or ignore!) when you’re doing the laundry.

Here’s what Fairy has to say: “We want to know what’s important to you. Have you found a way to save time? A way to get the best stain removal? A way to keep clothes huggably soft? Or even just a way to not lose matching socks! We would love to hear your tricks of the trade.”

What’s your perspective on laundry rules? Either way, Fairy Non Bio wants to know. Do you obey temperature regulations or simply stick everything in at 40? Perhaps you’re the kind of person who avoids overfilling and never fails to air-dry fine fabrics. Or, maybe you fill the machine to the brim and adopt a one size fits all approach to drying that would make manufacturers weep. Whatever they may be, divulge your laundry indiscretions.

Share the rules that you follow and those you ignore on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

The only rule is to make sure the washing machine and drier are switched on during economy 7 off peak hours .

JulesJules · 19/04/2018 19:10

I don't handwash anything. It all goes in the machine.

mugginsalert · 19/04/2018 20:30

Everything on 40. Bright stuff inside out (after years of wondering why things faded quicker on the outside)

HardyforTom · 19/04/2018 21:16

I was towels and bedding at 60, all clothes at 30 unless I feel they need more of a freshen or have stains, the I will wash at 40.

I separates lights, darks, and colours into separate washes.

I use one scoop/cap full of detergent and one cap of fabric softener, except for when washing towels then I don't use fabric softener as it makes the towels less absorbant. The tumble dryer fluffs them up enough to be nice and soft.

I use non bio detergent for the baby's clothes and bedding but use bio detergent for most other things.

Most things go in the tumble dryer except wools and delicates. I prefer to dry clothes outside when weather permits.

Delicates go in a delicate cycle and the hand wash cycle in my washing machine hasn't wrecked anything yet! I don't tend to separate synthetics and cottons, most of the time everything goes in a cotton wash.

Cailin7 · 19/04/2018 21:32

sometimes put light colours in with my whites and hand wash only items in the machine. Luckily no issues thus far!

mamof3boys · 19/04/2018 21:37

I wash dry clean only clothes on a gentle wash. I only separate darks from whites and wash everything on the same temperature. I do't usually check labels unless it's a delicate item.

Grobagsforever · 19/04/2018 22:16

I ask my husband what rules I should follow because I am a mere humble woman and laundry takes up my entire woman brain.

It's got much better since they invented The Internet though as I can post on sites like Mumsnet about laundry. Because that is what I really want from Mumsnet, the spirited, intellectual debates about politics, economics and sociology are of no interest to me, as a woman and nay, a mother, in 2018 all I really care about is laundry.

Can we have a thread about polishing shoes next week please @JustineBMumsnet ? Or washing dishes? Thanks in advance,

rejcomp · 20/04/2018 07:42

Separate colours and whites, that's about it!

jazzitup · 20/04/2018 08:59

Lights, darks, then colours washed between 30 to 50 degrees.

holey · 20/04/2018 13:14

I ignore everything if I'm short of time. I generally follow temperature guidelines on labels as I don't want things to shrink and unless I'm in a rush I separate things into "vaguely dark" and "more or less light". I always use separate fabric softener. That's about it. I wash hand wash, delicate and dry clean items in the machine quite happily!

MillyVanilli222 · 20/04/2018 14:59

I never bother to wash 'delicates' seperately, and I also mix colours with whites if there's just one white item that needs washing...

AngelwingsPetlamb · 20/04/2018 17:10

I would make manufacturers weep ! I wash most things at 30, I overfill my machine, I go by fabric rather than colour so there are alot of mixed washes.
I only use half the amount of fabric conditioner recommended and I use whichever laundry liquid/powder is on offer in the shop at the time.
I quite often wash clothes that are dry clean only because I check the material and make a decision myself based upon that info.

Awoof · 20/04/2018 20:42

I always put in more fabric softener than is strictly necessary. Sends my mum batty!

I shall always separate my whites however. Can't bare greyish vests and knickers

Ethan260908 · 20/04/2018 20:58

There is only one setting on my washing machine - that's the on button......

sweir1 · 20/04/2018 21:52

I throw everything in the machine and hope for the best

Grobagsforever · 20/04/2018 22:48

You do all understand that no one reads your responses...Fairy just want you to post on the thread to engage you with the brand and they will select a winner at random?

Dear Mumsnet posters - you're better than this! Stop posting about laundry roles! It's not 1955!!

farqualar2 · 21/04/2018 15:00

Separate whites from everything otherwise, whack it in the machine put in whatever washing powder was on offer and usually try on the washing line.

Shesawinner1989 · 21/04/2018 15:49

My only rule is lots and lots of softener. I sometimes maybe use too much!

cuppawithbiccies · 21/04/2018 20:41

Everything gets washed at 40 on the quick wash with lights and darks separated. Washing machine has a range of buttons and options on the dial that never get used!

Rachdayan · 21/04/2018 20:51

I live dangerously and ignore the 'hand wash only' instructions. 99% of the time everything turns out OK on a quick cool wash.

Flickabella36 · 21/04/2018 22:46

I separate colours fully, whites, blacks, blues, pinks, pets, sports, towels and bedding! I use 30 degrees a lot but probably put too many things in to wash at once! I also use too much washing liquid!

rocketriffs · 22/04/2018 07:56

I always do a separate whites wash and I ignore the washing symbols on clothes labels because I haven't a clue what they mean. Whites at 90 and everything else at 60.

ustupidwoman · 22/04/2018 09:07

I always separate my washing into 3 lots - the whites; the lights and the darks and I always wash delicate things separately inside a pillow case

otter099008 · 22/04/2018 14:36

I basically do a whites wash and a colours wash. If a top is nearly white, say light pink, then it goes in the wash with the whites. I always wash my whites on a 60 wash, regardless of what fabrics are in there. Yep, my clothes get ruined pretty regularly!

cheryl100 · 22/04/2018 15:20

I follow all the rules! I wash colours seperately and take notice of the care labels
