Going on a family holiday doesn’t have to mean venturing to far off lands, and there can be lots to experience closer to home. Scotland is so easy to get to and can be an ideal family holiday destination. VisitScotland would love to hear about the family holidays you’ve had in Scotland - and if you haven’t been, where in Scotland would you like to visit?

Here’s what VisitScotland has to say: Scotland celebrates the Year of Young People in 2018 #YOYP2018 and what better time to visit to enjoy a fantastic holiday experience across any of its regions. We’re a country packed with family friendly activities; from the great outdoors including wildlife, beaches and country parks to historic castles and stately homes and lots in between. Check out the National Trust for Scotland’s new playful gardens and playparks opening this spring at Brodie Castle in Moray and Newhailes House and Gardens outside Edinburgh. There’s also fantastic opportunity to visit Scotland’s islands – an adventure on a Cal Mac ferry to a west coast island or Northlink for a ferry to the Shetland and Orkney islands is all part of the adventure! What’s more, there's plenty of quality accommodation and unusual ones to boot! Ever thought about staying in a yurt or tipi, a converted church or lighthouse.

Be inspired to find out more on our unmissable family attractions, outdoor adventures and top 50 family hotspots in Scotland – check out www.visitscotland.com/holidays-breaks/family/

What happy memories do you have from a family holiday to Scotland? Do you have tales from visiting some of Scotland’s castles, islands, National Trust sites, beaches or parks? Have you looked into visiting and found some interesting accommodation? Would you like to visit Scotland’s cities or experience the great outdoors?

Whatever your family holiday memories or what you’d like to do in Scotland, share this below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

None at all sadly but I am desperate to take the DC. I love Edinburgh so would love to take them here. Would love the see the great outdoors too. So on my list, Scotland seems utterly amazing.

UpOnDown · 24/03/2018 19:31

We've been to Edinburgh, something for everyone!

We've had some great family holidays in Scotland. We love Arran "Scotland in miniature" - the scenery is beautiful & there's so much to see & do. From distilleries, to beaches, mountain climbing and golfing, plus delicious seafood & Arran cheeses.

Also live Aviemore; again there's so much to see & do, especially for families. We don't ski, but there's Loch morlich for cycling & having acpicib. Landmark park is also a fantastic day out.

I would love to go to the Outer Hebrides to see the white beaches at Luskentyre in Harris. Or to Skye.

I've had some lovely holidays in Scotland, mostly in Edinburgh where there is so much stuff to do, and also one fab trip to Loch Ness where we went Nessy hunting on the Loch.

BellaVida · 24/03/2018 19:35

As a child we used to go to Pitlochry and Aviemore, staying in wooden lodges. Lovely holidays, spent mainly outdoors wrapped up warm and travelling to lots of beautiful places.

We haven't taken our family yet, but it's definitely in our plans. Edinburgh for a couple of nights then maybe the rest in the Highlands.

CathBookworm · 24/03/2018 19:50

We found Linlithgow a lovely place to stay, very quiet, the beautiful Linlithgow castle, and a 25 minute train ride to Edinburgh if you wanted a bit more hustle and bustle.

suziehx · 24/03/2018 20:09

We absolutely love Blair Drummond Safari Park. So much to do for all ages . A real fun day.

TheOnlyPurpleLlama · 24/03/2018 20:21

We really want to do the NC500 next year... although might be a bit of a challenge with a 4 year old and 2 year old in tow! Hopefully we'll do a nice mix of wild camping, airbnb-ing and hotels.

Really looking forward to it! Never been before, but DH loves it there.

ClaraZafara · 24/03/2018 20:24

I haven't been in a long time but loved Edinburgh.

I'd love to go to The Isle of Skye, and also to Arran. Sure I will one day.

minceandpotatoes · 24/03/2018 20:32

I've never been to Scotland before, but would love to visit some time. I'd particularly like to go to Loch Ness. A friend has been to Dundee and said that was lovely, so I would maybe like to go there too.

Spanneroo · 24/03/2018 20:35

We holiday in Scotland at least once a year. We like the highlands best.

Back in November we went to Glenelg on the west coast and had the worst case of post holiday blues we've ever had on our return!

We arrived on bonfire night to the bonfire on the beach, with fireworks reflecting off the sea. We saw the local brochs, walked the trails at Sandaig, explored the fairy Glen on Skye, took a tour of loch Ness - and more! It was a truly magical holiday for us: the scenery, the history - even the horizontal rain!!!

Our eldest (Nearly 4) has been nagging to go back for months now and we're hoping to oblige as soon as we can!

starlight36 · 24/03/2018 20:54

We had an amazing half term holiday in Edinburgh. I'd been a few times as a single lady but had a very different experience with my family. The arrival into Waverley was just as stunning. So much to do with young children - Our Dynamic Earth was amazing, the Castle a huge hit and the Museum of Scotland had so much to see.

I'd love to head up the Western coast and visit Skye.

Tiredofit · 24/03/2018 21:15

Well, we live in the Scottish Highlands and still holiday in Scotland every year. We like the caravan park at Embo, Sutherland. I used to travel to Edinburgh And Glasgow for work but now the boys are older I would quite like to try a city break.

buckley1983 · 24/03/2018 21:41

We've never been to Scotland, but would absolutely love to go! It looks so beautiful. My ideal would be a peaceful walking holiday, exploring the more remote areas along the coast.
I'll love to visit the Isle of Skye, Loch Lomond & the beautiful Fair Isle, after watching the documentary on BBC2 a little while ago! What a wonderful way of life :)
I worry my LO would get bored - at 5, he wants to be constantly entertained & complains of feeling bored the second life slows down to less than 100 mph.. but I hope this will settle with age! :)

helivalentin · 24/03/2018 21:43

I've never been to Scotland but it's been on my wish list for ages! I'd love to do a Hebridean whale cruise with the kids or go around Scotland visiting the amazing whisky distilleries in Highland and Lowland with my other half. I know there'd be so many amazing things to do and see in Scotland and hopefully one day I'll actually make my dream come true!

pmama · 24/03/2018 21:46

I've never been to Scotland, but we visit National Trust sites frequently in England, and we have plans to go up North and look around in Scotland as well. Brodick Castle and area is on our list as we love wondering around in these type of buildings and just see how much world had changed since the time these buildings were built. Usually, based on my experience, National Trust sites are coming with all amenities, so perfect place to visit with family (grannies and kids, too).

honeyandginger48 · 24/03/2018 21:52

My husband is Scottish so we’ve been on holiday to Scotland a number of times. Our favourite was a trip to Arran when the children were younger. We stayed in a lovely cottage near the sea and did lots of family walks.

RainyDaisy · 24/03/2018 22:06

I'm Scottish living in England and my kids haven't been to Scotland as we can't afford it. I'd love them to get to know their roots.

I'd love to take the to Edinburgh to see the castle, Inverness to see Nessie Wink and I'd love to take the to Skye. Or Orkney!!! Just so much to see! Or Loch Lomond. Oh so many places. Or Oban!!!!

Sorry this list is endless!

ilovekitkats · 24/03/2018 22:44

Been to Scotland 3 times pre DC. It’s a very long way from here, but worth it. Stayed on Skye twice which was lovely. Went to John o Goats, not much there, and travelled back down the coast.

Want to take DC there but it’s a long way to drive. Would love to go by train.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/03/2018 22:57

I grew up in Helensburgh and went back to the area on our honeymoon. Would love to take my DC to see the area; Hill House, Balloch castle Garelochhead... Would also love to go back to Glasgow as an adult and really appreciate Kelvingrove!!

Hs2Issue · 25/03/2018 07:50

Dh and I have been to Scotland for work. I'd love to take Dd there as she loves history and walking and there would be so many places we could explore together.

She'd love to explore castles and we'd enjoy the walks sounds like an ideal holiday for all of us.

juddyrockingcloggs · 25/03/2018 08:47

In May we are taking our caravan and doing a little tour around Scotland! We're starting with 2 nights in Berwick, then to Stirling for 3 nights, up to Fort William for another 3 nights with hopefully a walk up Nevis and then down to Lockerbie for 2 days! Looking forward to it!

nerysw · 25/03/2018 09:09

I've only been to Scotland once and that was pre-children and would love to take my kids there on holiday. Edinburgh is top of the list to visit but the islands look like a fab place to stay.

algor · 25/03/2018 09:18

Scotland really is a fabulous holiday and indeed permanent location, depending on where you are based you can be only a few hours drive from a glorious beach, remote mountain or historical monument, picking the days trip depending on the weather at the last minute. We are lucky to live in and enjoy the beautiful beaches of Fife, but we still holiday in Scotland three times a year in our caravan with our three, now teenage children. For seventeen years we have toured around but we still return to our favourite haunts, especially the Cairngorms whose beauty, regardless of the season, is breathtaking. Staying in a forest campsite it always proves to be the most rewarding of holidays, full days of exploring and adventure go by without ever having to jump in a car or bus first so we really feel like we have escaped the daily grind. There is something for everyone to do and at every level from walking or adventurous climbing in the mountains, cycling along a woodland path or bombing down a trail at breakneck speed to leisurely strolls around the beautiful Loch Mortlich, it really is so special to us.
