Going on a family holiday doesn’t have to mean venturing to far off lands, and there can be lots to experience closer to home. Scotland is so easy to get to and can be an ideal family holiday destination. VisitScotland would love to hear about the family holidays you’ve had in Scotland - and if you haven’t been, where in Scotland would you like to visit?

Here’s what VisitScotland has to say: Scotland celebrates the Year of Young People in 2018 #YOYP2018 and what better time to visit to enjoy a fantastic holiday experience across any of its regions. We’re a country packed with family friendly activities; from the great outdoors including wildlife, beaches and country parks to historic castles and stately homes and lots in between. Check out the National Trust for Scotland’s new playful gardens and playparks opening this spring at Brodie Castle in Moray and Newhailes House and Gardens outside Edinburgh. There’s also fantastic opportunity to visit Scotland’s islands – an adventure on a Cal Mac ferry to a west coast island or Northlink for a ferry to the Shetland and Orkney islands is all part of the adventure! What’s more, there's plenty of quality accommodation and unusual ones to boot! Ever thought about staying in a yurt or tipi, a converted church or lighthouse.

Be inspired to find out more on our unmissable family attractions, outdoor adventures and top 50 family hotspots in Scotland – check out www.visitscotland.com/holidays-breaks/family/

What happy memories do you have from a family holiday to Scotland? Do you have tales from visiting some of Scotland’s castles, islands, National Trust sites, beaches or parks? Have you looked into visiting and found some interesting accommodation? Would you like to visit Scotland’s cities or experience the great outdoors?

Whatever your family holiday memories or what you’d like to do in Scotland, share this below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

We did two weeks in Orkney with the dcs last summer and it was AMAZING. Sunny, loads to see and do, great food and wonderful people.

But my best memory has to be Arisaig. Taken the kids camping there so many times to a fabulous campsite beside a beautiful beach. I have a great photo of the dcs jumping waves at 10.30pm, with the sun setting over Rhum behind them. Such a happy memory.

Until my daughter started school we spent a week in February each year near Aviemore. It was a lovely quiet break - we'd stay in a small village and felt like we properly relaxed. There's some great food, and enough around to keep kids entertained even at that time of year. There was the occasional bonus of some skiing.

The first holiday me and my dc shared with my now dh was Ardnamurchan (?), we slept on the shore every night!! Tents flooded every day but after dozens of trips to Scotland they say it was the best holiday ever!We have been to Loch Lomond, Sterling, Aviemore, Mull yearly for the rally, camping mostly, ds had his first holiday up there!! Memories made for our new family when we got married!!

Dontknowwhatimdoinghere · 23/03/2018 22:21

I would love to visit the isle of Harris or indeed any of the islands. The beaches look beautiful! In fact one day I'd like to move there. I've only been to Scotland once as a child when I visited Glasgow with a friend for a weekend.

AlwaysOldBeforeMyTime · 23/03/2018 22:38

Sadly I've only visited once (so far!) - to Edinburgh at Christmas which was just brilliant. Such a picturesque city and loads of lovely places to eat & drink.

I'd love to go back, as well as explore the Highlands and Islands. They look so dramatic and untouched.

Yettilegs11 · 23/03/2018 22:52

We had a lovely time in Edinburgh. It was my daughter’s 6th birthday and she chose to visit Edinburgh and the zoo instead of a birthday party. She chose Edinburgh as it’s the only zoo in the UK that has koalas. We all had a fantastic time.

I'm from Edinburgh originally but been in South East nearly 20years.
One of my fondest holiday memories was about 5 years ago when we packed caravan for 3 weeks in Scotland ending up in Edinburgh. I though 3 weeks in a caravan with small children may be a feat too far but we had an amazing trip. I think the highlight was Aviemore and the Cairngorms. Drinking hot chocolate and watching reindeer at the top will always stick in my mind and showing my children my favourite childhood haunts such as Edinburgh Castle, National Museum of Scotland, Museum of Childhood and then a Lucas ice cream was lovely. Can't wait to repeat.

For the past 4 years I've travelled with my DDs to Edinburgh to stay with my mum. We try to see different things each time. The highlights have included Edinburgh Zoo, the Botanic Gardens, and last year we visited Craigmillar Castle which was a brilliant place for my girls to explore! We also love beach-combing from Portobello up to Mussleburgh. This summer we hope to go a bit further afield and head up to the coast around Kirkcaldy.

Our favourite places to visit within Edinburgh are the National Museum of Scotland, the StoryTelling Centre, and the Museum of Childhood.

We are planning to visit Edinburgh for our 3rd wedding anniversary in November this year. Neither of us have been before but can't wait to try everything and see all of the sights!

I live in Scotland and we holiday here. Last year we spent a week in Inverness with our 2 year old and it was great. It was a great weather week and we spent a lot of time pottering. But we visited Dornoch beach and went to Aviemore/Loch Morloch/Kingussie for a couple of days. There is so much to do. The highlight for me was seeing a red squirrel outside Kingussie but if you ask the 2 year old she'll say Dingwall park!
In a couple of years we plan to go to Shetland for a holiday and I can't wait.

Snog · 24/03/2018 06:32

I love the Edinburgh festival, so much fun to discover new acts both brilliant and appalling in temporary venues like churches!
I'd love to explore some of the islands of Scotland with my daughter or take a road trip.

MakeTeaNotWar · 24/03/2018 06:40

I've been to Scotland once - to Edinburgh on a hen weekend. I took the train from London and it was a really beautiful scenic journey as a I got closer. I would love to visit the Highlands and the Isle of Skye

Anniegb72 · 24/03/2018 06:48

We’ve been to Edinburgh on a city break. Enjoyed exploring and we visited Edinburgh castle. We would love to take kids too.. perhaps to one of the Scottish islands. It would be nice to be away from the bustle and hustle of the city.

ifigoup · 24/03/2018 07:15

We did a youth hostel near Loch Lomond, and loved the fresh clean air and expansive skies in the morning.

GetSchwifty · 24/03/2018 07:20

We spent a week near Aviemore last October. We stayed in a lovely cabin by a river. We got the funicular train up Cairngorm mountain and went to a reindeer centre. It was a great holiday, I just wish it wasn’t such a long journey to get there.

peronel · 24/03/2018 07:26

Took the ferry to Mull and drove around the island. DD and DS loved Tobermory (Balamory), Stayed in a great B & B with a huge dog called Winston, who was a real pet. Booked a wildlife safari which was brilliant. Really knowledgeable guy pointed out loads of wildlife we would otherwise have missed including huge sea eagles with wings like barn doors! Best thing was using a Treasure Trail which made it fun to explore the island. Beautiful beaches; a really memorable holiday Grin

ConorMcGregorsChin · 24/03/2018 07:55

Many happy memories of childhood holidays. Loch Lomond, Oban, Fort William and other areas of the West coast. Isle of Arran is beautiful. I've stayed in guest houses, on camp sites and in youth hostels in some stunning locations! Swimming in rivers, playing in the woods and barbecuing freshly caught mackerel. Priceless memories. We also watched the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles in a local community centre during one summer holiday Smile

DarkPeakScouter · 24/03/2018 08:15

We did a family trip up to the Orkneys - they were stunning! We went to skara brae and the ness of Brolga, looked at various standing stones and watched a flock of swans come in to land on a loch. It was incredible.

CrashTestMummy18 · 24/03/2018 08:23

A few years ago we went camping at Faskally near Pitlochry.
It's a great location to explore from, nice and quiet but just an hour from the central belt and Stirling and Perth very close.

Would like be to go back and explore some more

Suebnm · 24/03/2018 08:50

We love Scotland so much we got married many years ago in a register office on the Isle of Mull. No- one else there except 2 witnesses 'borrowed' from the admin office.

We now go to Orkney, Inverness or Mull every year. Our son and his wife visit Ayrshire and Inverness and last year our baby granddaughter went to Argyll and Bute on holiday with them.

Great people, great food, wonderful country.

mshell1231 · 24/03/2018 09:02

I've been to Glasgow a couple of times but would like to go to Edinburgh in the future too.

BlossomCat · 24/03/2018 10:06

One of the best family holidays we've had was travelling to Oban by train, admiring the magnificent scenery on the way.
We then caught the ferry to Coll, then Tiree, staying a few days on each island, giving us the opportunity to explore, seeing the differences in the neighbouring islands and discovering beautiful deserted beaches on both.
High points were seeing birds, seals, swimming in clear cold water. The amazing people who were so lovely and friendly, even being invited into an older couple's home for Irn Bru and biscuits when we were caught in the rain.
I have very fond memories of reading a Katie Morag story to my children sitting outside our tent, looking over the bay that is beautifully illustrated in every book in the series. Our Katie Morag books have survived long after many other books have been discarded, now that my children have started to leave home, as they hold do many memories for us all.

We are looking at revisiting Scotland this year, as every spring my daughter says she really wants to go back.

This time, I would go up to Skye, Harris and Lewis to re-tread the steps my husband and I took in the 90s on a brilliant touring and walking holiday where we saw many fabulous sights.

c75kp0r · 24/03/2018 10:14

Edinburgh is fabulous, we loved the botanic garden, the art gallery and the spacious feel - the streets seemed somehow bright and airy - though the flip side of that was it was there was a vicious cold wind that you couldnt seem to escape from. Wrap up warm and enjoy.

Punkatheart · 24/03/2018 10:33

I went to Edinburgh and managed to fit in a wolf conference, where I met biologists and animal people I had admired for years. Then did a touristy visit under the vaults of the city, loving the stories. Edinburgh Castle lit up at night is astonishing...
