Going on a family holiday doesn’t have to mean venturing to far off lands, and there can be lots to experience closer to home. Scotland is so easy to get to and can be an ideal family holiday destination. VisitScotland would love to hear about the family holidays you’ve had in Scotland - and if you haven’t been, where in Scotland would you like to visit?

Here’s what VisitScotland has to say: Scotland celebrates the Year of Young People in 2018 #YOYP2018 and what better time to visit to enjoy a fantastic holiday experience across any of its regions. We’re a country packed with family friendly activities; from the great outdoors including wildlife, beaches and country parks to historic castles and stately homes and lots in between. Check out the National Trust for Scotland’s new playful gardens and playparks opening this spring at Brodie Castle in Moray and Newhailes House and Gardens outside Edinburgh. There’s also fantastic opportunity to visit Scotland’s islands – an adventure on a Cal Mac ferry to a west coast island or Northlink for a ferry to the Shetland and Orkney islands is all part of the adventure! What’s more, there's plenty of quality accommodation and unusual ones to boot! Ever thought about staying in a yurt or tipi, a converted church or lighthouse.

Be inspired to find out more on our unmissable family attractions, outdoor adventures and top 50 family hotspots in Scotland – check out www.visitscotland.com/holidays-breaks/family/

What happy memories do you have from a family holiday to Scotland? Do you have tales from visiting some of Scotland’s castles, islands, National Trust sites, beaches or parks? Have you looked into visiting and found some interesting accommodation? Would you like to visit Scotland’s cities or experience the great outdoors?

Whatever your family holiday memories or what you’d like to do in Scotland, share this below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I love in Scotland but have never been to the Outer Hebrides, Orkney or Shetlands so would like to go to these places some day. Skye is fantastic. I stayed there with friends a few years ago, in a cottage surrounded by sheep. They seemed very interested in our food so whenever we cooked there were sheep bleating at the back door. The weather was great too. We were sitting in a cafe (someone's house, basically with outside tables!) and a bull just casually strolled past. Fantastic!

I have had so many lovely holidays in Scotland . I couldn't choose one. The scenery is just stunning. Weather is often better in Spring than Summer oddly. A few years ago we were staying near Applecross. We crossed the pass (vert nail biting) and found this most beautiful beach with clear waters. It was like something in the Caribbean. Unfortunately, the water was full of jellyfish! We also swam in the sea loch next to our holiday rental. In August! It was an exceptionally lovely Summer that year.
I love to go to Balquidder , near Callander, where I have swum in the Loch several years running. It was an absolutely amazing experience, especially at 7am when the sun was coming up and everything was so still.

I love Scotland, but the best time to visit is outwith midge season, so up till late May or from mid September. The wildlife in the highlands is amazing. Red squirrels, deer, pine martens, birds of prey.

I sailed up the Caledonian Canal to Loch Ness with my parents many many years ago.

I’ve since been to Glasgow and Edinburgh many times, mostly for work but I’d love to bring the DC up to Edinburgh for a city break, and do a day trip to see the Kelpies, the Falkirk Wheel and visit the Antonine Wall (I know there’s not much to see, but walking along the edge of the Empire would be cool).

Loved Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire, Loch Lomond as a child and now again with my children. Planning to visit Edinburgh and Glasgow now my children are older and can enjoy the culture. Some of our best holidays were in Scotland

So many happy holidays in the Highlands and Islands. There is no better feeling than the drive into Glen Coe and the potential of adventure bubbling. It feels like a weight lifting, the sun coming out and the air freshening. Even our cynical 17 year old can feel it.

There are too many highlights to mention them all but from our last holiday: a walk around the desolate and out of this world Quirang on an ‘all the weather’ day; experiencing the sun and rain approach us. A deserted Armadale beach with just the 12 people I love the best in the evening sun cooking sausages, swimming and dancing as the sunset. Trying out ice-climbing with my four boys, in Kinlochleven. It was humbling for us all to be learning something new together.

We love Scotland, there is something for all of us regardless of our age.

Islanding around is where we talking about for next time.

I had several wonderful holidays in Scotland as a child and have loved taking my own kids on a few Scottish adventures. We generally go to the Highlands - Ullapool, Laide, Gairloch, maybe drive up to Durness and John O'Groats. Also like Aviemore. Two years ago we went to Lewis. My parents had been telling us for years to go to Uig Sands (they visited on their honeymoon over 40 years ago). Wow! My children had the most amazing time having such a huge beach practically to themselves.

Thinking of going back up to Scotland again this summer. Just love the feeling of adventure... Driving is the way to go, watching the scenery change and the becoming more and more remote. Would love to visit the Shetland Islands...

We live in Scotland(overlooking the beaches of Morar, backing onto the HPotter railway line) and holiday everywhere here.

Edinburgh - city life, theatre, restaurants.

We love the borders around Duns.

Barra (or Barra-bados) is stunning. Skye. The Cairngorms. Knoydart. The Small Idles.

ManchesterMum01 · 25/03/2018 11:56

We had 2 nights camping in Glentrool near Galloway Forest Park. The stars were amazing and we got to see a meteor shower too which was beautiful.
We then spent 2 nights camping on the shores of Loch Lomond. The highlight of the trip was a short boat trip to an island in the middle of the loch and 3 hours tranquil stroll and discovery walk around the island with our 4 and 7 year old. Peace with children is possible!

We live in central Scotland and holiday in other parts of the country at least once a year. We've had amazing holiday on Mull, Orkney, Islay, and at Loch Ness, Wester Ross and Skye. Probably the best experience was on Islay - we had a cottage right on the beach, the weather was superb, we all swam in the sea and sat watching otters in the bay in the evening. So relaxing and lovely.

There is so much to see and do in our beautiful country and I like to think we give visitors a warm welcome too. Would quite like to explore the Moray Firth area, not a part of the country I know that well.

ichifanny · 25/03/2018 12:53

We go to a caravan near fort William Just at the foot of Ben Nevis , the kids can run free and it’s so quiet and peaceful . Planning to go to skye this year and camp , the wildlife in Scotland is just breathtaking .

Pumpkintopf · 25/03/2018 13:53

I've never been but would love to visit my friend who lives near Loch Goil. The scenery looks incredible.

DuskPanda · 25/03/2018 17:22

Never been but would love to visit the Islands and beaches.

firstbornforbread · 25/03/2018 19:11

I'm from Scotland, I live elsewhere but every trip back we take my son to Edinburgh. He's in love with the castle and hopes to live there as a soldier one day Grin

fleshmarketclose · 25/03/2018 19:21

We spent a week in Dumfries and Galloway and had a lovely week. The scenery was spectacular, the locals were friendly and just about everywhere allowed dogs on the premises which was great. My favourite place has to be Whigtown, all those books, could have happily spent the whole week there tbh. Going to Edinburgh later in the year planning to do the Rebus tour and the zoo at least.

stinksworth · 25/03/2018 19:52

We've been to beautiful Arran a few times and last year took our daughter for the first time. It was so lovely to be able to show her the gorgeous scenery - at nearly 3 and with me 5 months pregnant we even managed half way up Goatfell.

We're looking forward to taking both children in a couple of years time (we live in Cornwall so it's quite a trek). Such a beautiful place.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 25/03/2018 21:31

Adding to my post earlier, on our trip before last (4 years ago), we drove all the way up to the Highlands from down south in our campervan, stopped a night at a campsite in Laide then the following morning we made our way to Ullapool, only to break down. Ended up being towed to the campsite in Ullapool by a very kind farmer with a Landrover. We still spent the week sleeping in the van but had to hire a car to get around. The next morning was spent in the garage chatting to a lovely local man who was interested to know if we'd ever move up there. Didn't manage to get the van fixed while we were in Scotland so it came home on an AA truck!

PlayingForKittens · 25/03/2018 21:37

We've not really done Scotland at all, just Edinburgh without the kids. We've just booked a place in Glenfinnan for this summer. The Boy wants to climb Ben Nevis, The Girl wants to see the Harry Potter viaduct and Small Boy is more interested in the beaches. I'm really looking forward to it.

defineme · 25/03/2018 21:38

I have fantastic memories of visiting Edinburgh, but where I would most like to is the Outer Hebrides to spot sea otters from a white sand beach

Theimpossiblegirl · 25/03/2018 21:54

We stayed near Loch Ness pre-kids and had a lovely stay- walking miles each day, eating and drinking in lovely pubs. I'd love to go again, in a camper van so we could really explore.

missymousey · 25/03/2018 22:09

I live in Scotland and love holidays here - it's a small country but there's SO MUCH to see! My favourite trips are always to the far Northwest - we've been to Ullapool and further north every year for about 10 years, as well as other trips. Ullapool itself is a gem - a wee harbour town with two fantastic bookshops, a handful of great pubs, and a thriving live music scene. Get further north and your into scenery that exists nowhere else on the planet as far as i know - certainly some of the oldest rocks on earth, which makes for some incredible landscapes. Narrow roads, few people, pods of dolphins and seals off the coasts, vast empty beaches, pitch-black starry skies, and some very bolshy sheep. Honestly you could forget that real life even exists!

gemmie797 · 25/03/2018 22:25

I'd love to take my sons to visit Edinburgh. Such a beautiful city. I went when I was younger. I'd love to show them the castle and see Arthur's Seat

GetKnitted · 25/03/2018 22:31

We had a great long weekend in Scotland. We drove up there for 5 hours in the car, stayed in glasgow next to the big science museum, went to Edinburgh on the train and visited Loch Lomond. It was delightful!

jenthehen · 25/03/2018 22:43

Following a spate of family bereavements I felt that we needed a break. A picture of a white fisherman's cottage looking out over a sea Loch popped up on the Internet and it looked perfect. This was the start of our love affair with Scotland and particularly the West Coast. Beautiful sandy beaches, incredible wildlife; including whales and dolphins, keep bringing us back. We will happily drive for hours to a fantastic little restaurant to enjoy fresh seafood. We all love Scotland, even my teenagers : )

RomaineCalm · 25/03/2018 22:55

We have lots of happy memories of holidays in Scotland.

We love Glasgow. Days out at Loch Lomond, the Burrell Collection, Kelvingside, the West End, museums and the botanic gardens. Great restaurants and shopping. Plenty for families if you do a bit of research.

Stirling Castle and the surrounding areas are lovely and we've also been lucky enough to be in Edinburgh for the rugby - amazing atmosphere!
