Going on a family holiday doesn’t have to mean venturing to far off lands, and there can be lots to experience closer to home. Scotland is so easy to get to and can be an ideal family holiday destination. VisitScotland would love to hear about the family holidays you’ve had in Scotland - and if you haven’t been, where in Scotland would you like to visit?

Here’s what VisitScotland has to say: Scotland celebrates the Year of Young People in 2018 #YOYP2018 and what better time to visit to enjoy a fantastic holiday experience across any of its regions. We’re a country packed with family friendly activities; from the great outdoors including wildlife, beaches and country parks to historic castles and stately homes and lots in between. Check out the National Trust for Scotland’s new playful gardens and playparks opening this spring at Brodie Castle in Moray and Newhailes House and Gardens outside Edinburgh. There’s also fantastic opportunity to visit Scotland’s islands – an adventure on a Cal Mac ferry to a west coast island or Northlink for a ferry to the Shetland and Orkney islands is all part of the adventure! What’s more, there's plenty of quality accommodation and unusual ones to boot! Ever thought about staying in a yurt or tipi, a converted church or lighthouse.

Be inspired to find out more on our unmissable family attractions, outdoor adventures and top 50 family hotspots in Scotland – check out www.visitscotland.com/holidays-breaks/family/

What happy memories do you have from a family holiday to Scotland? Do you have tales from visiting some of Scotland’s castles, islands, National Trust sites, beaches or parks? Have you looked into visiting and found some interesting accommodation? Would you like to visit Scotland’s cities or experience the great outdoors?

Whatever your family holiday memories or what you’d like to do in Scotland, share this below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Have only been once, on a camping trip to Glasgow to attend the Commonwealth Games which was amazing if rather wet!
Would love to have a proper outdoors holiday in the Highlands :)

My DD hates flying, so she just loves Scotland! We’ve stayed in Strathyre, and it was just so beautiful. We loved visiting Edinburgh, and with Scottish NT passes, we plan on visiting again this summer. Just need recommendations now!

I've never been to Scotland but I'm a Harry Potter novels fan so if I could I'd love to go see Alnwick Castle where some Harry Potter was filmed along with Elephant House Cafe, the beautiful Lochs and travel on a real steam train. You couldn't go to Scotland without seeing the Scotish dancers dancing along to bag pipe players, Edinburgh Castle and of course tasting some Scotish food too!

I spent most of my childhood living in Scotland, and return often to visit family. We've also been on holiday to Scotland twice: once to Arran, once to Mull. Both holidays were absolutely brilliant. So many unspoiled beaches, interesting walks, wildlife round every corner (including very friendly Highland cows on Mull). One of the best meals we've ever had was in a seafood restaurant on Mull. We're planning on visiting Lewis and Harris next. The north east near Aberdeen is gorgeous too, and you can't go wrong with a city break to Glasgow or Edinburgh. I love Scotland!!

Had a lovely week in Oban when DS was little. It was August and the weather was tolerable (ie. not snowing or blowing a gale). Did loads of outdoor activities and ate in nice restaurants. Stayed in a beautiful looking B&B which did great breakfasts but was sooooooooo cold for soft Southerners!!! We did a boat trip to Tobermory, which was brilliant and so exciting for DS, who was an avid Balamory fan!

Would highly recommend that part of Scotland, was a great place to stay.

I have spent summers in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. I also went up to Loch Lomond once in April and loved walking through the many fields of bluebells. So still and beautiful, an experience I will never forget.
I have also visited the Isle of Arran, which was gorgeous. Our next family holiday to Scotland will be to Glencoe as we have never been, but we have heard is unique.

@fivekidsonemum that all sounds great but you do know Alnwick is in England?

fivekidsonemum · 05/04/2018 20:00

Obviously not or I wouldn't be saying I'd like to see it in Scotland hahahaha !! Well I've learnt something new today ( to be honest I'm not exactly bright and couldn't tell you where 99% of towns are on a map lol) I honestly thought that they filmed the castle scenes in Scotland ??

fivekidsonemum · 05/04/2018 20:04

On the map it looks to be on Scotland but when I zoomed in yes it's Northumberland !! Good job I've never tried to visit coz id of spoilt my perfect visit to Scotland and be going round in circles looking for it hahahahaha thanks for helping me an pointing it out for everyone to laugh coz I certainly had a good giggle when I realised my mistake

Oban for deep fried haggis and chips Grin

Take a week out and do the Northwest 500 in a campervan. Loads of free camping so no need to book anywhere. Make the most of the dramatic scenery and quiet

Wonderful times had in Kinlochleven, just a few miles from Glen Coe. It is truly stunning and I never tire of looking at the same mountains. The weather has never been a problem. Apart from once, when it caught us out and we had to find a shop that sold shorts and t-shirts for the kids! Scotland in the rain or in the sunshine, doesn't matter to me. The complete peace and quiet and beautiful clear skies with none of the London pollution I'm used to, is worth the 504 mile drive, every time.

BuntyII · 05/04/2018 22:36

I'd love to go to Eilean Donan. Doubt i ever get to though

TellMeItsNotTrue · 06/04/2018 02:25

I've only been to Scotland once, when I was a child, we went to Edinburgh and I remember going to Edinburgh castle and thinking it was truly magical because I'd only ever read about castles in fairy stories!

I would love to go back to Scotland with DC, maybe repeat my trip but with me as the parent this time! I would like to look at other parts of Scotland too though, go to some of the quieter picturesque places for a relaxing break away from screens and noise!
