Going on a family holiday doesn’t have to mean venturing to far off lands, and there can be lots to experience closer to home. Scotland is so easy to get to and can be an ideal family holiday destination. VisitScotland would love to hear about the family holidays you’ve had in Scotland - and if you haven’t been, where in Scotland would you like to visit?

Here’s what VisitScotland has to say: Scotland celebrates the Year of Young People in 2018 #YOYP2018 and what better time to visit to enjoy a fantastic holiday experience across any of its regions. We’re a country packed with family friendly activities; from the great outdoors including wildlife, beaches and country parks to historic castles and stately homes and lots in between. Check out the National Trust for Scotland’s new playful gardens and playparks opening this spring at Brodie Castle in Moray and Newhailes House and Gardens outside Edinburgh. There’s also fantastic opportunity to visit Scotland’s islands – an adventure on a Cal Mac ferry to a west coast island or Northlink for a ferry to the Shetland and Orkney islands is all part of the adventure! What’s more, there's plenty of quality accommodation and unusual ones to boot! Ever thought about staying in a yurt or tipi, a converted church or lighthouse.

Be inspired to find out more on our unmissable family attractions, outdoor adventures and top 50 family hotspots in Scotland – check out www.visitscotland.com/holidays-breaks/family/

What happy memories do you have from a family holiday to Scotland? Do you have tales from visiting some of Scotland’s castles, islands, National Trust sites, beaches or parks? Have you looked into visiting and found some interesting accommodation? Would you like to visit Scotland’s cities or experience the great outdoors?

Whatever your family holiday memories or what you’d like to do in Scotland, share this below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I've never been to Scotland but we definitely have it on our bucket list. We are campers and want to do the drive all around the Scottish coasts. Once all the dc are past the baby stage we will definitely do it.

Huffpot · 24/03/2018 12:04

We're getting married on Skye this year...we've never been to Scotland but have fallen in love from a distance and we can't wait

Confuzzlediddled · 24/03/2018 12:13

We had a perfect holiday in Scotland in 2016, we stayed in a caravan in North Kessock, just a few miles from Inverness. On the drive there from Leeds we stopped overnight in Dundee and spent the day searching for oor wullie statues, posing next to desperate Dan and minnie the minx and exploring the area. We then went to our caravan, wandered about and the children were incredibly excited when an ice cream van came to the site after dinner - we don't get that in the middle of a city! We spent the week exploring lots of places, fort George, Landmark, culloden and of course Nessie hunting! We were blessed with fantastic weather and at times it was too warm which we really weren't expecting, it meant we didn't touch our woollies and waterproofs!
At the end of the week we travelled South to another caravan in Fife, a lovely place called Elie. We then visited lots more places, Falkirk wheel and the kelpies, Stirling Castle, Bannockburn, Edinburgh zoo and rounded off the holiday with a visit to the Edinburgh Tattoo. We all thought it was the best holiday we have ever had and as a result we've booked again for this Summer, same caravan site near Inverness and then a week in Edinburgh to see some things at the festival, as we realised there was so much more we wanted to do and ran out of time to do it all, especially as the more we did the more we found, things we didn't know existed like jm barries home or the completely bonkers titanic museum!

One thing I really loved was the fact as a disabled parent I could do so much with the children, it felt like nowhere was out my reach, meaning we could really enjoy being together, I can't wait to go back this August!

I have never been to Scotland but it is definitely somewhere I would love to visit. I would love to visit Edinburgh and stay for a couple of days to mooch around the buildings and take in some of the history. However, I would also love to visit the Orkneys and Shetland Isles and I have heard many good things about Skye and Mull.

My dream would be to spend 2 - 3 weeks driving around part of Scotland - I am disabled so am unable to get out and walk in this stunning part of the country. I love wildlife so would be happy staying in two different areas, somewhere in the countryside where I could see deer, otters and birds of prey and then somewhere on the coast where I could watch boats and also keep a watch for dolphins and other sea creatures.

We go to Scotland almost every year for our anniversary, but this year will be the first time since becoming parents. We're looking forward to taking him on a bike trailer around the trails at Glentress, walks in the hills, and going to Edinburgh Zoo.

When my first daughter was 6 months old, we drove to Scotland from London for a wedding. We were so worried about the journey but it was amazingly well. We loved Scotland and got such a warm reception from everyone there. The wedding was in Ayr which was beautiful. We learnt a lot about Robert Burns that trip. Strangely our second daughter was born on Burns Night!

daniel1996 · 24/03/2018 14:31

Last summer whilst visiting friends in Scotland we went on the Highland Safaris at Aberfeldy. The safari rangers were really good with the children and made it a very memorable experience, we saw red deer, we went panning for gold, (did not find any -but had great fun trying and imagining spending our wealth). The scenery in Scotland is breathtaking with the Lochs ancient castles and greenery, although a gold-rush was not to be, we are going back during late summer to visits more attractions in Perth.

TheWizardofWas · 24/03/2018 15:04

We had a marvelous time in Edinburgh. The buildings were so wonderful, esch older than the last. Climbing Calton Tower was exciting. It was so blowy, one of the little ones was almost swept away (but it was fine). The museum of optical illusions, the castle, the alleyways - everything was excellent. We stayed in university accomodation, in a little family flat, which DCs loved and the breakfast of porridge and berries was a great hit. Lovely place, historical, intriguing, with quirks. Next time we go we will try a ghost tour.

AdaColeman · 24/03/2018 15:18

We've visited Scotland many times, and always enjoyed both the stunning scenery and the interesting historic cities.

Our favourite holiday was when we stayed at Dunkeld to visit the ospreys at the nearby Loch of Lowes.

I even met the local Laird and helped him select a new tie whilst out shopping! Grin

KeepCalm · 24/03/2018 15:18

Live in Scotland but holiday here too. Last year was a trip to Skye, Harris & Lewis and fell in love with Skye so much we went back again.

Dunked and surrounding is also gorgeous as is the East Neuk in Fife.

Best place in the world!

KeepCalm · 24/03/2018 15:19

We also spend a lot of time on the Moray Coast. Just wonderful.

magentastardust · 24/03/2018 15:55

The scenery is just fabulous, Not that many places that have beaches, hills, rivers and woodland walks all in one location. Loch Lomond is so pretty and we have had lovely holidays exploring Loch Ness area. Our favourite is the East Neuk of Fife so many gorgeous beaches and pretty villages.
Would love to visit one of the Isles such as Harris , the beaches there look amazing and Aviemore looks to have great activities for families.

Soozikinzii · 24/03/2018 16:09

I love Scotland and always feel it's my spiritual home maybe because I have red hair! I find the people very welcoming without being intrusive. I have been to a hotel on Loch Lomond in the snow ,which was beautiful .As a child we went for walking holidays around Perth and Oban and we climbed Scheihallion. We have also stayed in a caravan at Kirkcudbright. My favourite holiday was just over the border in a remote cottage at Old Hyndehope it was so peaceful and great for our 6 sons to have such freedom to roam.

Quietvoiceplease · 24/03/2018 16:13

My favourite break in Scotland was probably two - both completely different reflecting the variety of difference in Scotland. One was a short break in Edinburgh during the festival - took the children, saw loads of different shows, and lots of tourist sites in Edinburgh and ate and drank very well. We went up on the train (from London) and stayed with friends and it was just brilliant, busy, exciting few days where we decided on a whim what we do each day.
The other break was a few days close to Drumnadrochit, in a pretty little cottage in what felt like the middle of nowhere. Weather was dry though cold, and we spent each day out exploring the area - walks to waterfalls, trips on a boat, and a visit to Inverness. We flew up and used a hire car and it felt like we were a very long way away,

Scabetty · 24/03/2018 16:22

We have visited many times but my favourite was a tiny, remote cottage near Strathpeffer with its own pond, and rowing boat that led to a wood. I have never been somewhere so dark at night or so quiet. The children loved it and still talk about the pond years later.

piraterach · 24/03/2018 16:59

Scotland will always have a special place in my heart. My husband and I went to Inverness on our first holiday together 10 years ago (back when we were just bf and gf). There was so much to do within driving distance, we went on boat trips, explored underground caverns, ate haggis and got sozzled in whisky. Now we have a 6mo LG and I would love her first holiday to be in the highlands. I'm sure there's plenty more to see!

mummymummums · 24/03/2018 17:38

I've only been to Scotland once, and went up Ben Nevis. One day I'd like to take the DC there to do it again, so probably Fort William area.

Buffymum · 24/03/2018 17:45

Our most talked about holiday is still 10 days in Scotland when the children were 7 & 8 .
We drove and the first stop was Gretna Green . Lovely photos with the piper and all enjoyed the history and walking around the forge .
Onto Loch Lomond and the most delicious lunch at a resteraunt on the Loch side . The Cullen skink has never been beaten !
We arrived at our destination , at a cottage on the banks of Loch Linhe Late . It was simple but welcoming , spotless and virtually on a beach . The owners had left some small provisions , jams ,etc .
Over the 10 days we : went up part way of Ben Nevis - spotting a red squirrel. Went to Loch Ness , enjoying the museum but loving the rib ride on our search for Nessie !
We had a family horse ride along a beach overlooking Eilean Donan Castle , my DH on a wayward pony made my sides hurt from laughing .
We spent 1 day on a beach where people looking at our photos think we are in Greece - beautiful sun , sand and blue sea - having packed for cold / wet , we were treated to weather hot enough for shorts and t shirts ( although the sea / Lochs freezing ! )
We visited Easdale Where the world stone skimming competitions are held , and went on an amazing sea safari to the 3rd largest whirl pool in the world - Corryvreckan and saw a sea shelf as well as seeing sea eagles and other birds
We also went to Glenco and bagged a Monroe .

Almost every day we visited the little beach by our cottage and whist the DC played/ paddled DH and I would sip s nice glass of something .
Sadly we tried to book the same cottage again the next year but it had been sold .
Lovely memories Smile

We have been to Scotland. It has always appealed to me, I would love to go as far north as possible and travel down Scotland visiting different castles and sights. Not sure my 5 year old or 1 year old would cope so I would go to Edinburgh with them while young then when older maybe little road trip around Scotland.

Shireslass · 24/03/2018 19:14

I got married in Scotland and it was fantastic! I cannot to take my little girl there and show her where we got married.
Edinburgh is one of the many Scottish destinations I would like to visit.
We went to Glasgow a few years ago and had a wonderful time, followed by a brilliant time attending a friends wedding in a castle!

Treaclespongeandcustard · 24/03/2018 19:16

I have been to loch lomand, Edinburgh and Glasgow. I loved each place equally and found the Scottish people lovely and friendly.

burwellmum · 24/03/2018 19:23

I have never taken my children to Scotland but had a very happy, if midge/tick infested holiday there as a child. The west coast was beautiful and great for an outdoor holiday.
