A good night's sleep is something many of us long to have, and would go to great lengths to get. That’s why Dreams would like to know your top tips and successful methods for getting a great night’s sleep, whether that’s perfecting the temperature in your bedroom or a never fail tactic to keep children in their rooms.

Here’s what Dreams has to say: “At Dreams, we understand the importance of a great night’s sleep and we know this can seem like an impossible challenge for new parents or parents to be. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Mumsnet and its community of parents to help you get the sleep you deserve.”

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period? Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner? Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things? Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?

Whatever you do to help you improve your quality of sleep please share it below. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

DH and I always sleep naked for the best nights sleep, and we always keep the window open whatever the weather. A good, medium firm mattress and nice clean bedding too.

I think that keeping yourself cool whilst snuggling up under the duvet is the best combo for a good nights sleep!

Herecomesanotherone2018 · 17/02/2018 09:45

I have a white noise machine on to block out noises from next door, outside etc. Since I've been using it I sleep so much better!

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/02/2018 10:21

I really like my lumie light, it makes wake ups much more gentle.

I try and read before bed rather than look at my phone.

I find doing exercise each day means I sleep much better.

I find it really really difficult to get to sleep when I am somewhere different, never have a good nights sleep when I’m not at home.

MoaneyBoney · 17/02/2018 14:28

We live on a busy main road with a street light outside our window so the main factor in helping us to nod off is very effective black out curtains!

I love my bedding to be clean and soft, and always have to have 3 pillows. I love my bed. Smile

Newly washed bedding and a lavender pillow spray helps me drift off. I also like to have the tv on low on a timer - I know this is usually a no no but I find it helps me switch off!

ColinsVeryJolly · 17/02/2018 15:20

DH needs the radio on to sleep but I like total quiet and a pitch black room.
I also need comfy pillows and the duvet tucked in at the bottom of the bed.

mrsglowglow · 17/02/2018 16:50

A cool room but with a snuggly duvet. Aldo a few drop of lavender under the pillow. If I'm on my own I sometimes have LBC on the radio and the chatting sends me off to sleep pretty quick.

Thick curtains, light duvet, no tv, no coffee, window open at least a crack, all year round. Does the trick for me!

Ren1974 · 17/02/2018 18:28

Until recently my daughter used to get upset when I left her in bed after reading her a story as she did not want me to leave her. I tried all kinds of nightlights to make her feel safe and secure but she just did not want me to leave her alone. However, recently I stopped reading her picture books and instead I am reading her the first Harry Potter book so she is not distracted by pictures but simply listening to the story. She loves it and does mind my leaving after a chapter and switching off the lights and she falls to sleep within minutes.

I then read my own book in bed (on my phone so as not to distract the hubby with a nightlight) which makes me sleepy and relaxed too and i very rarely have a bad nights sleep :)

littlebillie · 17/02/2018 18:54

Warm clean bed and one which supports your back. Minimal light and no mobile phones or devices.

noseynumpty · 17/02/2018 19:21

Long warm bath then a dark room with tv on quietly, I can't sleep in quiet and like to hear a familiar programme in background. And as partner works nights then I sleep in the middle of the bed with lots of room.

vickyors · 17/02/2018 19:53

We start a bedtime routine early.. I struggle with insomnia, so we have a bath with bubbles or something, then I like reading in bed. We have a blackout blind as well as curtains, and I have a low tone light. I read and journal in bed then we sleep. And my bed has a memory foam topper on it. So good.

NoWordForFluffy · 17/02/2018 19:55

Black out blinds combined with curtains and a nice cool room help me.

And we’ve just bought poorly-sleeping DS a warmer duvet which has improved his - and therefore our - sleep too!

Freddiesgirl · 17/02/2018 20:27

My top tips are:

  • an eye mask always helps me go to sleep quickly
  • no phones near the bed
  • keep bed socks close in case you get cold feet, I can't sleep with cold feet!
RemoveAllPicturesOfRon · 17/02/2018 20:37

Definitely no phone in bed! Plus my White Company hot water bottle and a lumie light

Peoniesandcats · 17/02/2018 21:21

I try and get upstairs by 10.30pm, have a cuddle and chat with my hubby, lights off & no phones. Fresh sheets help but obviously don't change them every day!

Akira1218 · 17/02/2018 21:55

I need a room that isn't too warm. About 16 degrees is perfect. I sleep with a summer blanket as me and OH both eminate heat!

I sleep with no light at all, as does my 3 year old. I sleep on my front with three pillows, one leg up... a bit like the recovery position... recovering from my day time mumming!!!

I have to go on my phone for 10 minutes before bed to tire me out, makes my eyes heavy. I also have routines before bed I have to do to get a restful sleep

Sugarhouse · 17/02/2018 23:15

Before ds was born 6 months ago ear plugs were a must every night. After months of ending up on the sofa due to Dh snoring and weird nighttime noises driving me mad A friend gave me some spark plug earplugs. Changed my life slept great for two years and really cheap on amazon. Since my baby was born I haven't felt comfortable sleeping with earplugs so sleep with white noise playing on YouTube helps me and the baby sleep well even with the snoring

Suzielou66 · 17/02/2018 23:16

I suffer from two chronic illnesses that cause a lot of pain and often find it hard to sleep. However, I have a nice warm bubble bath with a few drops of lavender oil. Then put on nice clean pyjamas that have been washed with lavender and camomile scented fabric conditioner. I climb into a lovely comfy bed with crisp cotton sheets that have been lightly sprayed with lavender pillow mist. After massaging Badger Sleep Balm (made with Lavender and Bergamot) onto my wrists and French lavender oil onto my legs I sleep like a baby.

Toadsrevisited · 18/02/2018 07:38

Cosleeping with baby DS.
Massage and gro clock once older and in own bed.
Outright bribery and threats at 4...

DreamyCat · 18/02/2018 08:56

Silicone ear plugs are a must for me. They are the best at noise reduction and don’t fall out during the night. We have a routine of reading our books for about 20-30 mins before bed, it helps me to wind down. I also think fresh clean sheets and a comfy mattress are super important for good sleep.

MargoChanning · 18/02/2018 10:39

I find having my window slightly open really helps me get to sleep. I cannot bear a warm bedroom. I also now make sure I switch my iPad and mobile off at least an hour before bedtime to help me wind down.

rizlett · 18/02/2018 15:44

A little bit of ASMR video before bed - can't be beaten - asleep in seconds!

ZoSanDesu · 18/02/2018 15:50

We just bought a super king. So DH and I fall asleep together, but then have plenty of space to sleep. Then if either DS come in, they get the middle of the bed and we all remain asleep!

shuggas · 18/02/2018 19:02

A cool bedroom and a consistent bed time helps me Smile
