A good night's sleep is something many of us long to have, and would go to great lengths to get. That’s why Dreams would like to know your top tips and successful methods for getting a great night’s sleep, whether that’s perfecting the temperature in your bedroom or a never fail tactic to keep children in their rooms.

Here’s what Dreams has to say: “At Dreams, we understand the importance of a great night’s sleep and we know this can seem like an impossible challenge for new parents or parents to be. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Mumsnet and its community of parents to help you get the sleep you deserve.”

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period? Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner? Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things? Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?

Whatever you do to help you improve your quality of sleep please share it below. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I need a cool dark room, firm mattress and two soft pillows.
I also have to be nice and warm under the duvet but window open so the room isn’t stuffy.

Dh uses ear plugs to listen to films or music so I’m not disturbed.

Always have lbc on the radio in room,a warm bedroom and socks fluffy warm socks with pj trouser legs tucked into them.

Ollivander84 · 19/02/2018 00:43

I wear socks to keep my feet warm as I can't sleep with cold feet! Window slightly open as I like a cool room but a warm bed
A sunrise/sunset light and a dark, peaceful room

SSCRASE123 · 19/02/2018 06:50

A cool pillow for me will have me to sleep in minutes. Having time to relax before sleep is important too, if I get straight home or haven't had any down time then my mind is still racing from the day.

Bellaboo1234 · 19/02/2018 06:57

A comfortable mattress and clean bedding, along with some reading always has me falling of to sleep better.

TracyKNixon · 19/02/2018 07:09

Stick to a sleep schedule of the same bedtime and wake up time, even on the weekends - this gos for everybody in the family - old and young! A good mattress makes a difference too - I didn't sleep well for years and when I decided to invest in a new bed with a comfy mattress, I slept like a baby!

A dark room is the ideal thing and no phones in the room to distract you.

Pastychef · 19/02/2018 07:18

Shower an hour before bed time and then a hot, milky drink (usually Horlicks)

emmav6 · 19/02/2018 07:30

i have to have a dark room, blackout blinds in our room has really helped esp when OH is on nights

Spices001 · 19/02/2018 07:34

All screens off 1 hour before bed & Lavendar spray squirted on my pillow

strawberrisc · 19/02/2018 07:41

I went back to basics. When I was trying to get my daughter into a bedtime routine I decided to try it for myself. An hour or so before bed I turn off all electronics - including TV and mobile phone. I have a bath or a shower with lavender products. I make a milky drink and get into bed with NO lights on at all. It didn't take long for my body and brain to start to understand that this was the time to sleep.

tabbaz123 · 19/02/2018 07:50

Leave mobile phones and other electronics away from the bedroom! Have a cool room but a pair of bed socks and keep the room as dark as possible

flozza42 · 19/02/2018 08:10

Blackout blinds and a comfy bed is a must for me to have a good nights sleep

prwilson · 19/02/2018 08:22

I like a nice hot shower before bed. I think the relaxing effect helps me sleep.

mollymoo818 · 19/02/2018 08:31

I personally need a nice dark room at the right temperature which for me is slightly cooler than I would have the other rooms in the house. I think that with a duvet you don't really need to have it warm and there is nothing worse than wakening up too hot and uncomfortable because then I find it hard to fall back asleep. I also have a lavender spray which I spray on my pillow and the kids pillows. I am not sure how much it helps with sleeping but the smell is so relaxing that I think it helps ease the mind and aide with actually relaxing and falling asleep.

muppet1501 · 19/02/2018 08:33

Dark room, no light, no sounds. Avoid using technical devices before you want to sleep.

lulumajor · 19/02/2018 08:38

Reading a book before bed to make your eyes more tired

Nice walk or other exercise early on. Then quiet time with no tech in the evening, and stick to a routine where possible.

mo3733 · 19/02/2018 08:42

sleep when your baby sleeps. for the first few months you just have to go with the flow

phillie1 · 19/02/2018 08:43

Have a piece of paper next to bed, so you can write down anything you are worried about/think 'I must remember that' during the night.

03kelwil · 19/02/2018 08:53

I find reading helps me sleep. Also try not to watch tv or use phone in the bedroom.

xcxcsophiexcxc · 19/02/2018 08:54

Having black out blinds is amazing , cannot sleep when it's light which was first of a difficult when I tried the sleep when your baby sleep approach. But after making my room as dark as possible I was able to fall asleep fast

AR2012 · 19/02/2018 09:02

A nice quick shower before bed. Lights off and comfortable bedding.

lotte321 · 19/02/2018 09:05

We have a routine for my DD. After a bath we snuggle on the sofa and watch 20 minutes of TV - something calm! She then goes to bed in a dark but cool room with a small nightlight on. This works for us and she gets a good nights sleep.
