A good night's sleep is something many of us long to have, and would go to great lengths to get. That’s why Dreams would like to know your top tips and successful methods for getting a great night’s sleep, whether that’s perfecting the temperature in your bedroom or a never fail tactic to keep children in their rooms.

Here’s what Dreams has to say: “At Dreams, we understand the importance of a great night’s sleep and we know this can seem like an impossible challenge for new parents or parents to be. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Mumsnet and its community of parents to help you get the sleep you deserve.”

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period? Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner? Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things? Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?

Whatever you do to help you improve your quality of sleep please share it below. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Tempur matress - it's heaven
Cool room
Dog next to me she smells of biscuits and so calming
Pillow that supports head on neck
A bedroom free of clutter
Everyone else in family asleep first as I like the calmness of that

I have a blackout blind, has to be dark to sleep. I also have a lovely silver blanket that I got for Christmas to snuggle under. Keeps me warm but not too hot or cold. Finally, I have to try and not think about going to sleep. The more I think about it the longer it takes to drop off. If I let my mind wonder I can fall asleep. Smile

Nighttime is always the same for me and takes 30-40mins

I take a leisurely shower, then I do my face routine, then some talcum powder.

Then into a darkened room, body moisturiser, hand cream.

Goodnight kiss to my son and partner.....zonk

Always go to bed at the same time. Have a bedtime routine.

IWouldBeSuperb · 13/02/2018 07:06

My personal top tip is a super king duvet on a double bed - no more fighting over who has more quilt - there's plenty for everyone!

One pillow - I find 2 creaks my neck.
Darkness - blackout blind and curtains.
DP watches the iPad in bed before we sleep and it drives me insane. It delays me getting to sleep due to the light, at least he now where’s earphones so there’s minimal sound!

JBramley · 13/02/2018 07:21

Top tip for me is to sleep with my hearing aids out..... hahaha but can't have them out because I've got to listen out for baby on the monitor lol!

maclinks · 13/02/2018 07:27

Essential to have the right smell in the bedroom, and quite . your sight and taste senses are out . You need minimal noise and a great smell, not too hot or cold , I do quite like clean sheets of high thread count .

Stickladilove · 13/02/2018 08:00

Ambient temperature, fresh bed linen and a good book

MrsFrTedCrilly · 13/02/2018 08:26

A cool dark room with a firmer bed and the absence of children would be my recommendation for a good nights sleep.

GriseldaChop · 13/02/2018 08:34

I need lovely comfy pillows and to be warm and snuggly (but not hot!). I also like to make sure the bottom sheet is totally flat, even tho I did that in the morning when I made the bed too!

voyager50 · 13/02/2018 08:47

I have recently discovered L'occitane Pillow Spray - I spray it at the top of my sheets and duvet before I go to bed and the scents are really relaxing and help me drift off.

We have two little ones and from our experience routine is the best way to get a good night's sleep we always have a bath a story for our little ones and for us no telly, pads or phones in our room and it works great we're still early risers but the quality of the sleep through the night is greatly improved by doing these things each night and brings us all closer together.

Use lavender based products to help wind down before sleep

ReelingLush18 · 13/02/2018 10:48

Total darkness, quiet and having a window always open (even in mid winter).

YesitsJacqueline · 13/02/2018 10:56

I know they say no screens but I watch inane youtube videos before bed , things like make up tutorials or ''life hacks'' , it relaxes my brain.

i wake often in the night , due to my son being a poor sleeper for the first 2 years of his life , I have become a very light sleeper. I find if i take a hot water bottle to bed and wear an eye mask (like they do on the plane) , then I can get back to sleep quicker.

MiddleClassProblem · 13/02/2018 11:17

I’m an awful sleeper! I’m better since having CBT to deal with anxiety but with DH’s snoring and DD’s nightly waking I’m fighting a losing battle!

ljwynne2010 · 13/02/2018 13:39

For the best night sleep for me and my husband a good mattress is key! For our baby son we have tried to keep the same bedtime routine, which starts with a warm bath and a baby massage, after that it's warm bottle of milk then settle him down in his cot with his myhummy teddy gently playing white noise.

snapple21 · 13/02/2018 13:43

Blackout blinds are a must, especially when I'm working nights. I also love my electric blanket!

PipLongStockings · 13/02/2018 14:27

Mattress topper and electric blanket. Duvet and blanket. Pillows arranged at angles next to my head. Dark room, heating off a night and aromatherapy steamer on!
Oh I love my sleep!

ncullinane · 13/02/2018 14:35

For me it has to be really dark and quiet, I like it to be warm but not too hot!

dadshere · 13/02/2018 14:38

I go to bed first and get comfortable- DH comes up after I am drowsy and faffs around etc without disturbing my too much :)

NerrSnerr · 13/02/2018 15:12

Listening to the radio helps me sleep when my mind is too busy. Listening to music stops my thoughts being too intrusive.

lilyboleyn · 13/02/2018 15:58

Having moved my LO into her own room a couple of years ago, I’m afraid I still rely on Ewan the dream sheep to get me off to sleep... drives my poor husband mad! It’s also helpful to sleep on my front diagonally across the bed, with all of the covers Grin

asuwere · 13/02/2018 16:29

I go to bed when I'm tired - seems obvious but for a while, I was keeping to a 'routine' but then realised that there was no point staying up later if I was tired and similarly, no point going to bed when I wasn't tired. Seems to work, apart from the few times I force myself to stay up as I don't want to go to bed before DS1 :)
