A good night's sleep is something many of us long to have, and would go to great lengths to get. That’s why Dreams would like to know your top tips and successful methods for getting a great night’s sleep, whether that’s perfecting the temperature in your bedroom or a never fail tactic to keep children in their rooms.

Here’s what Dreams has to say: “At Dreams, we understand the importance of a great night’s sleep and we know this can seem like an impossible challenge for new parents or parents to be. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Mumsnet and its community of parents to help you get the sleep you deserve.”

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period? Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner? Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things? Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?

Whatever you do to help you improve your quality of sleep please share it below. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I have to have the radio on all night, I have talk radio on not music,I either drive off straight away or at least have something to listen too.

wonderstuff16 · 19/02/2018 15:49

Accupuncture has really helped me as I'm a terrible sleep. I would really recommend trying it.

Annieg1234 · 19/02/2018 16:21

i find turning off my screens (phone, tablet etc) about an hour before bed really helps as well as having some really decent pillows, personally i also find i sleep much better if my room isn't too hot so even in the dead f winter i will have a window open during the day

ren999 · 19/02/2018 16:27

I believe the secret to a great nights sleep is a comfortable mattress and now that you can get mattresses that are different on each side, both you and your partner can get a great night's sleep. I also don't drink any tea, coffee or coke after 7pm, and I always read before bed.....usually after a few pages I drift off. I used to find myself waking up a few hours later when I heard the dog walking around or when my husband started snoring but I now use Muffles wax earplugs from Boots every night and they are great too!

For us it's bath, baby massage, cuddles and song, and co-sleeping!

Minnibix · 19/02/2018 16:30

I love a dark room, not too warm and then read a book within 30 minutes I am dozing off. Oh no laptops or tablets allowed in the bedroom

kittykomp · 19/02/2018 16:46

routine and black out blinds

villagefox · 19/02/2018 17:11

We moved the TV out of the bedroom so that one of us does not end up watching it as the other one is drifting off. We tend to read for 15 mins before lights off and keep the window open a touch so that the room does not get to stuffy Smile

merlymerly · 19/02/2018 17:19

Of course no phones too close to bedtime. Warm bath with lavender oil always helps and keep the bedroom at the best temperature to sleep ( not too hot but not cold). A regular bedtime always helps as well

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 19/02/2018 17:19

I know for sure the things that prevent a good sleep:

Too much screen time in the evening
Too much wine
Not resolving an argument before bedtime

So sorting all of those would help, that and a nice warm bath 😁

Lauzipop1 · 19/02/2018 17:44

I have a few rituals.

  1. Turn the phone onto silent.
  2. Have half an hour reading time to wind down before going to sleep.
  3. Use Lush 'Sleepy' body lotion.
  4. Spray my lavender sleep spray and apply balm to pulse points.

One thing not to do is drink a strong coffee right before bed. I did this last week and was up half the night.

mrpeterhall · 19/02/2018 17:50

My wife and I share a double bed but we use two single duvets. She goes for a 4.5 tog and me............well I'm always cold! so go for a 10.5 tog. No arguments........and neither pinches the other's cover.

Blessyourheart · 19/02/2018 17:59

Only screen allowed is Kindle, blackout blinds, high threadcount sheets and a comfortable bed.

BL0SS0M · 19/02/2018 18:15

Try not to look at the phones before bedtime! Also getting to bed early and reading to relax! And an electric blanket to make it all cosy and warm

ladyratterley · 19/02/2018 18:27

When possible, I get into bed at least half an hour before I need to go to sleep. I try not to look at my phone or iPad. Instead I read to turn my mind off from what’s happened during the day and what I need to do the next day.
If I’m struggling to get to sleep I use a pillow spray and use mindful breathing techniques to relax.
My DP would like to have the radio on in the background, but I need quiet so when we moved in together I bought him a small pillow speaker, which he can hear but I can’t!

Abominus · 19/02/2018 18:34

Exercise, hot bath and a comfy pillow. To be honest i've never been good at falling asleep, my mind is always too active. I use the sleep timer on my TV and leave it on just for a bit of background noise. Distracts me enough to stop me thinking about things and worrying.

dadshere · 19/02/2018 18:38

My DH swears by a glass of wine at 9.pm then read for an hour and sleep!

LauraMMM · 19/02/2018 18:46

For a good night sleep i love a hot bath then a hot drinks with a book, sometimes sitting in bed with a book can be uncomfortable so an invention for this would be amazing! I also like to watch a film in bed at the weekend. When i feel i am stressed and not sleeping well i use lavender spray on my bed which helps. One thing me and my husband struggle with is i am always so cold in bed and love to be snug as a bug whereas he gets super hot easily so finding a balance in that is difficult. Also it said for a good pillow to suit your needs, I recently bought a fairly expensive pillow but it was so hard it ended up giving me migraines so im back to my old one. A way to try before you buy would be fab!

lynsmagoo · 19/02/2018 18:47

i have a slight curve at the bottom of mt spine so my lower back gets sore if i dont sleep in the right condition i.e. if i sleep on my front or on my back. so the best way for me to have a good nights sleep is on my side with knees bend and a pillow inbetween my knees....and with my pug on my pillow above my head. i couldnt sleep without his snoring in my ear 🐶😂😂

A few friends of mine are using an app with different sounds on that are supposed to help you go to sleep. My best friend swears by white noise to help her little one sleep.

I have recently started setting my radio on a timer and have found a nice airy room, fresh bedding and soothing music is really helping me fall asleep quicker.

cocochips · 19/02/2018 19:01

A nice warm shower before bed and no technology at least an hour before sleeping

Ikea1234 · 19/02/2018 19:27

You can't beat clean bedding and a bath to get a great nights sleep. I also am someone who enjoys watching tv in bed and falling asleep easily watching it. Problem is, I miss the ending of so many good films and never know "whodunnit"!

rhinosuze · 19/02/2018 19:31

I fall asleep easily when the tv is on! Find a bit of noise good, when it's quite I find I think about things etc
Generally though not bringing work into the bedroom helps and I leave my phone in the living room
