A good night's sleep is something many of us long to have, and would go to great lengths to get. That’s why Dreams would like to know your top tips and successful methods for getting a great night’s sleep, whether that’s perfecting the temperature in your bedroom or a never fail tactic to keep children in their rooms.

Here’s what Dreams has to say: “At Dreams, we understand the importance of a great night’s sleep and we know this can seem like an impossible challenge for new parents or parents to be. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Mumsnet and its community of parents to help you get the sleep you deserve.”

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period? Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner? Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things? Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?

Whatever you do to help you improve your quality of sleep please share it below. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Making my room as cosy as possible and not using electronics after 10pm

lizd31 · 19/02/2018 12:42

I suffer from fibromyalgia so have a lot of pain in my muscles & joints. I have an adjustable bed which suits me well as I can adjust it so that it is in the best position for comfort. I also use a pillow which is for back sleepers. I have breathing problems too so have a humidifier next to my bed & use sweet marjoram, lavender & eucalyptus essential oils in it which help me breathe & relax to get a good night's sleep.

A dark quiet room is all that I need to get to sleep .

socat · 19/02/2018 12:59

Comfortable bed, Black-out curtains and room not too hot. No late coffees!

glennamy · 19/02/2018 13:16

For children it is routine routine routine, for the grown ups, no electrical stimulation for at least 30 minutes before going to bed to wind down and relax.

southernsun · 19/02/2018 13:28

No technology in the bedroom and I read for 20 minutes in bed to try and clear my mind and relax before switching the lights off. w

Room has to be a little chilly, really voluminous duvet and soft, soft bedding. And a mattress that is comfortable when i sleep.on my side or my front.
I have to read before i nod off too. If i dont i cant switch off. Its like the words relax my brain.

I have fostered loads of babies and they often come with sleep issues and I crack it everytime. My biggest tip is... What works for one child might not work for another so ignore all advice and do it via trial and error and what works for your lifestyle but stick religiously to same routine once you have cracked it. The recent baby came at 7mths and woke 20 times a night, I cut out all stimulation (mobiles, toys), room completely dark, placed straight down awake after final drink and kept going back in silently to place back down if cried and never lifted out of cot. It worked for her and she is a great sleeper now, but others might need the soothing music etc.

As you are lying down in bed with your eyes closed, hold one nostril closed. Breathing through just one should simulate a relaxing effect. The method aims to calm your body and mind enough to drift off into a deep sleep. This may sound silly but give it a try it works for me.

CMOTDibbler · 19/02/2018 13:46

Nice dark room (blackout linings attached to our curtains), kept cool, crisp cotton bedding, and no phones/tv/screens in the bedroom

RACHELSMITH45 · 19/02/2018 13:46

Don't drink coffee so late - as I made the mistake of doing yesterday! Instead, drink a Horlicks/ milky drink around 8pm.. stay off technology from a similar time. Don't discuss anything that will likely to stay on your mind all night such as work. Nice hot water bottle helps me and got to be a dark room too!

itsali · 19/02/2018 13:50

I've had troubled sleeping before and the things I find help are: fresh air during the day, taking daily exercise, meditation and yoga, a lavender-scented bath before bed and playing "rain sleep sound" videos from YouTube when I'm trying to sleep.

sm2012 · 19/02/2018 13:53

Definitely a dark room and I try to read for at least 10 minutes before switching the light out to go to sleep :)

sezz35 · 19/02/2018 14:01

Room not to warm, and a good book, but not too good or you won't want to put it down!

mooota1514 · 19/02/2018 14:12

Following this as my sleep isn't great after the constant disruptions of kids for the past couple of years. A big help is keeping screens to a minimum in the run up to bed time. I put a couple of drops of lavender oil on me feet as well which helps a bit too. And having the electric blanket on before bed is lovely and relaxing and so snuggly to get into

giddyypixie · 19/02/2018 14:21

I find that I have my best nights sleep when I have not had any caffiene in the hours before I go to bed. I also go to gym early in the evening so that I am pooped by the time I go to bed and I have a no tech in bed rule so all I will do is read my book before I drift off to sleep.

KatnissMellark · 19/02/2018 14:22

Get a big bed!
Phones off from 9pm

happysouls · 19/02/2018 14:23

No tech before bedtime, winding down nicely! Clean and cosy bedding and electric blanket on so it is warm to get in! Bedroom window open whatever the weather so that the air is cold and fresh. Perfection!

IonaAilidh11 · 19/02/2018 14:26

i like my room nice a cool and dark

vonniebab2 · 19/02/2018 14:40

A cool dark room with a comfortable mattress and nice soft pillows

rwgray · 19/02/2018 14:48

Sleeping? I find a bed helpful, although I often wake up face down on the dining table with the late news on TV. Seriously? A cool room, no strong lights except the digital time. Heavy blinds. Motorcycle earplug.

Blainalass · 19/02/2018 14:48

No drinks after 9pm to save the middle of the night toilet trips!

addverbaan · 19/02/2018 14:56

My kindle! I read every night in bed and love the fact I can read with the light out and so once i'm falling asleep I can just close it and nod right off

frances93 · 19/02/2018 15:13

For my little girl the routine is a bubbly bath moisturiser warm bottle & pray that she's asleep within the hour! Then I can have a hot bath and wind down with my husband

devito92 · 19/02/2018 15:24

we have an amazon echo on the bedside table. this is programmed to play pink noise on a loop all thru the night. it works like a dream.
