Over the Christmas holiday many of us like to get out of the house and spend time with the family by going to the cinema. Whether it’s because you’re fed up of being indoors or desperately trying to entertain children, ODEON would like to find out what you do when you venture out of the house at Christmas to see a movie.

Here’s what ODEON has to say: “With so many family films out and many families planning their trip to the cinema to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi, ODEON wanted to know what Mumsnetters' best memories were of family visits to the cinema over the holidays.

Maybe you got taken to see a particularly Christmassy movie or a big blockbuster you'd been waiting ages to see. Or maybe you've got a great story to tell about visits with your the kids. Share your comments and stories below and you could win a £300 voucher or one of our extra special porg soft toys for the kids.”

So whether you are a regular Christmas cinema goer or have gone on occasion to escape home after over the festive season, share your Christmas cinema memories below.

Everyone who comments on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list) as well as one of 50 soft porg toys Smile.

Thanks and good luck!

I took the kids aged 2 and 5 to see the first Paddington movie. They were very excited and stood up and cheered every time Paddington came on the screen. I was concerned about the people behind us, but they thought it was sweet.

The cinema was a very rare treat for me as a child, and the ONLY time we went was Christmas - or very occasionally for birthdays as well. The only trouble with that is that there wasn't often a great film out to see - none of the best ones seemed to come out at Christmas!

We went as a large family gathering when I was small to see Lady And The Tramp. We couldn't all sit together so Dad and I ended up on the other side of the cinema.
Right at the end when Jock gets run over I sobbed very loudly and to my sister's eternal embarrassment I cried loudly " HE ISNT DEAD IS HE DADDY????" Xmas Blush

My Grandad was a member of the local working mans club and every year the club would pay for a christmas treat for children. One year it was a trip to the cinema to watch ‘Jason and the Argonauts’. I was only little and remember munching through a selection box whilst watching the film - which was both fantastic and terrifying. I’ve loved christmas visits to the cinema with choccies ever since.

love a visit to the cinema, with kids it can be a bit of an effort and expensive, buy few sweets and snacks to take with us,try and look for offers on tickets pick a family type film suitable for us all.we then snuggle down at cinema and enjoy the visit, great family time

I remember seeing Love Actually with my school friends when I was home from uni. We all sobbed in the Emma Thompson scene with the Joni Mitchell CD. That has stayed with me.

jacqui5366 · 26/12/2017 10:05

For me it was seeing Love Actually, whilst pregnant, with my hubby, It was Christmas time, and I was feeling positive happy. The film and maternal hormones made me weep, especially at the end. We have a 3 children now, but still make time to watch this movie which I was bought on DVD.

My best memories ever are of the sheer wonder and excitement aged 7 of seeing Star Wars at our local Odeon - believe me, I was Luke Skywalker for months, with a wonky plastic lightsabre to prove it - and taking my darling nephew, also aged 7, to see The Last Jedi this Christmas at our local cinema, still the same Odeon.

Exhilarating days to remember - now shared through the generations.

I must admit, I cannot recall any Christmas cinema experiences? Usually we prefer cosy movie nights in at this time of year, with homemade popcorn and our pjs on!

IonaAilidh11 · 27/12/2017 06:01

always go to cinema on christmas eve its our favourite tradition

Pastychef · 27/12/2017 06:02

Took my girlfriend to see Saturday night fever in 1977 as a Christmas treat. I bought a white suit to impress her and she said she would love me for ever. I wonder where she is now...

My dad took me and my brother to see Home Alone 2. I was so excited but I ended up napping during the home invasion sequence - the best part! I was desperately trying to keep my eyes open but I remember giving in to the overwhelming urge to nap. We were also the only ones in the cinema for that showing, which I thought was pretty cool.

glenka · 27/12/2017 07:11

I don't think I've ever been to the cinema at Christmas, it's not really something I've thought of doing before.

sunshinewey · 27/12/2017 07:25

Our christmas eve tradition is to visit the Dorchester Odeon cinema with our son, its a lovely thing to do and get out of the house to burn some energy......

SSCRASE123 · 27/12/2017 07:28

I don't think we've ever taken the kids to the cinema at Xmas, and I can't remember ever having been myself in all my years. Just not something that springs to mind as there always seems too much other stuff to do.

Narnianescape · 27/12/2017 07:36

I always remeber going to the cinema to see toy story on Christmas Eve and my dad falling asleep.

grannybiker · 27/12/2017 07:47

I remember my Granny taking me to see Snow White at the Odeon in town where the queue snaked around the block. However, because she was in a wheelchair after a nasty accident, we got to jump the queue and were shepherded inside and shown to some pretty prime seats. I remember hoping nobody would think we were pushing in!

Ganne1 · 27/12/2017 07:51

Tears at Scrooge (around 1951) and, surprisingly, Scrooged (with Bill Murray), and, finally, the original Miracle on 34th. Street in its entirety. Yes, we don't like our Christmas films too modern!

dawney2 · 27/12/2017 08:10

A few years ago we went to see Rise of the guardians at the cinema a few days before Christmas. Its such a good film and really got us in the Christmas Spirit x

AR2012 · 27/12/2017 08:19

We watched the Last Jedi. I personally felt the first film was better kids loved it though.

maryandbuzz1 · 27/12/2017 08:22

We went to see Victoria the week before Christmas. Although it wasn’t Christmassy it was great to forget Christmas for a couple of hours.!

03kelwil · 27/12/2017 08:24

Went with all the family to watch A Disney’s Christmas carol a few years back on Christmas Eve for some reason made everyone even more excited for the big day. It’s now tradition to watch the film on Christmas Eve every year together on the TV.

AnimalAddict · 27/12/2017 08:29

Going to see Santa Claus the movie, I absolutely loved it! :)

muppet1501 · 27/12/2017 09:42

Never been cinema at Christmas but i am wanting to go watch Pitch perfect 3 this week

happysouls · 27/12/2017 09:44

When my son was young Polar Express came out at the cinema and we all went for our first 3D film experience. Totally Christmas magic!
