Over the Christmas holiday many of us like to get out of the house and spend time with the family by going to the cinema. Whether it’s because you’re fed up of being indoors or desperately trying to entertain children, ODEON would like to find out what you do when you venture out of the house at Christmas to see a movie.

Here’s what ODEON has to say: “With so many family films out and many families planning their trip to the cinema to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi, ODEON wanted to know what Mumsnetters' best memories were of family visits to the cinema over the holidays.

Maybe you got taken to see a particularly Christmassy movie or a big blockbuster you'd been waiting ages to see. Or maybe you've got a great story to tell about visits with your the kids. Share your comments and stories below and you could win a £300 voucher or one of our extra special porg soft toys for the kids.”

So whether you are a regular Christmas cinema goer or have gone on occasion to escape home after over the festive season, share your Christmas cinema memories below.

Everyone who comments on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list) as well as one of 50 soft porg toys Smile.

Thanks and good luck!

Watching Muppet Christmas Carol! Singing to all the songs ( and still do every Christmas when we rewatch the film). Evokes such special times 👍

When we were young, my parents couldn't afford to take us to the pantomime so we had a special day out at the cinema, we each took it in turns to choose the film that we watched and luckily I only have sisters so we all tended to like the same.

Afterwards we would go home and mum would always make us big mugs of hot chocolate and some biscuits we had helped her make.

i seen a wonderful life at christmas in the cinema years ago, was amazing

KAKADU2001 · 08/01/2018 12:20

My wife and I had our first visit to Xmas in OZ in 2008 to visit our youngest son an his family who had recently emigrated their. We took our youngest grandson to see Revenge of the Sith. We have made yearly Xmas visits since as our daughter and her family now also now live in OZ. They have amazing lives and my wife and I encouraged them all of the way to make their dreams come true. It's their life and not ours to live as they like.

For the last few years we've been taking our daughter to see the latest Star Wars installment. It's become a family tradition. I remember going to the cinema as a kid at Christmas time and seeing E.T. for the first time (and crying buckets at the end).

We celebrate Christmas eve, eve the 23rd by going to the cinema. Over this time both my children were ill so told we can't go if they are ill. So morning of 23rd. Both come into my room and say they aren't ill can we go. OK I say. We watch new starwars film it's great but also quite long. As the credits start both start coughing as they'd keep it in as they really wanted to go and knew I'd left seeing it till later. They are mad for starwars though.

I think the cinema can be such a lovely family time. My son and daughter like to discuss snacks they can buy as treat to enhance the whole experience. If it's trip to VUE it has to be Nachos with cheese. I love watching their faces at the cinema when it's funny or sad and then chat about it later.
We all loved Paddington2 at the end of last year

We always go to the cinema as family between Christmas and New year as a tradition. My favourite memory is going to see Polar Express when it first came out and my son's face (the youngest) watching it was a picture!

the funniest christmas memory was when my bro decided he could not cope without taking tea to the cinema and proceeded to eat turkey sandwiches during the film! oh dear!

We have just had a fabulous cinema experience. We visited a 1950's style pop up cinema at Greenway, the Decon home of Agatha Christie. They were showing a selection of her films, and we watched "Evil Under the Sun". It was truly gorgeous, with Chesterfield sofas, blankets, old fashioned popcorn machines and the staff in full nostalgic uniform. Even our grumpy teenager was impressed, and the kids even loved guessing "who dunnit"!

it was always tradition that I took my 3 sons to the cinema on the afternoon of christmas eve to see the popular 'christmas movie' of the year- we all still talk about the time we went to see 'nightmare before christmas'; 'the grinch'; 'jingle all the way'... etc and even though they are now in their 20's - they all look back on it fondly when we're watching the same movies at christmas on tv

Sezza110 · 08/01/2018 22:44

Me and my cousin have a birthday close together and I remember my uncle once took us both to watch Like Mike.

rocketriffs · 08/01/2018 23:24

When we were kids, I remember every Christmas getting tickets from my Uncle for his social club kids cinema outing. They would hire the local fleapit and hundreds of kids were treated to selection boxes on arrival and a morning of old Warner Bros cartoons like Road Runner and Daffy Duck and a Disney Feature like Old Yeller or Greyfriars Bobby. Oldies but goldies. We loved it. It was a fab Xmas treat.

snare · 09/01/2018 09:30

I love taking my children to see a xmas film on boxing day :)

Lasplin84 · 09/01/2018 15:03

We have a tradition of having a family trip to the cinema between Christmas and New year, grandparents included. The grandparents then treat us to a meal out where the film is usually the talking point.

Leanfun · 09/01/2018 18:02

We went as a family to see ET. I always remember it.

This year it was Paddington2. thoroughly enjoyed it

farhanac · 09/01/2018 21:07

It's a Wonderful Life gets me every time

PhilTB54 · 10/01/2018 18:01

First film was Bedknobs and broomsticks.

BeeMyBaby · 24/01/2018 08:31

OhHolyFuck · 24/01/2018 09:40

Not yet @BeeMyBaby

BeeMyBaby · 24/01/2018 15:29

@EllieMumsnet any updates on when winners might receive their porgs?

EllieMumsnet · 29/01/2018 15:20

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the delay in the winners receiving their porg toy.

ODEON are experiencing unexpected delays in ordering them from the factories; they will be sending them out as soon as they can.

I will keep chasing for you and update you as soon as I know anything.

Many Thanks
Ellie
