We have a tree full of memories, each decoration reminds us of something or someone, and it's lovely spending time decorating the tree and reminiscing together. Through the year we pick up decorations when we do nice things and they are added to the rest in December, often they aren't technically tree decorations (as you would expect in July etc) but we always seem to find something that works and looks great on the tree

KittyKat88 · 20/11/2017 23:02

This year, we're going for a home-made Christmas and will try to avoid buying anything new, and particularly more plastics! Time to keep it simple and use natural products like twigs and wool strands to decorate. The DDs and I will have loads of fun crafting!

MSHGW · 20/11/2017 23:03

We have a fake tree, and go for baubles, lights, tinsel and ribbons. Usually go for a traditional red, gold, and silver colour scheme.

Thesqueezermustghost · 20/11/2017 23:08

Large real tree with baubles collected from around the world and lots of tinsel and fairy lights.

Pmliu · 20/11/2017 23:22

Our tree is gold and red themed, lots of tinsel and sparkly baubles and decorations

Funkyferret · 20/11/2017 23:22

I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to decorating the house for Christmas. Real tree, all white lights, colour scheme this year is going to be gold, white and green. I get a wreath for the front door from the same craft fayre every year and fill the house with lots of tea lights and little holly and ivy posies, clove studded clementines and Christmassy scent burners. I wish I could find as much enthusiasm for real decorating as the house really needs it!

naymechaynger · 20/11/2017 23:33

Outside we go American style -lots of big red bows on gates, doors etc

daisyduck123 · 20/11/2017 23:37

Red, gold and green traditional for us. We have a big hearth and make the most of it with artificial wreaths and swags. We actually bought the wreaths from Homebase ages ago and they have lasted so well.

I decorate the ceiling and walls and put multi coloured lights and baubles on the tree.Have a fake tree as the needles get everywhere with a real one.

TreacleFarl · 21/11/2017 01:35

I have no idea how I'll decorate this year but I really want to go big! First year as a single parent so I can now decorate however I like. I'm thinking lovely Christmas characters for our wee front garden, a 'Santa Stop Here Sign' and inside a twinkly tinsel and light filled warm home! It's DS's first year really understanding Christmas and I want to make it magical! The only thing I know is that I'll definitely be using my artificial tree and putting on the nostalgic multi-coloured lights. I can't wait!

silverrose · 21/11/2017 04:46

Christmas tree in the playpen is our theme this year! Only way to protect it from our 9 month old 😂

alabaster002 · 21/11/2017 06:03

Inside decorations up already; outside lights fixed but not yet illuminated; Christmas cards written but still to send; sit down and relax........until I wake up!

astirrup34 · 21/11/2017 06:45

Every year I watch the old you tube clips on how to decorate your house for Christmas. I then revert to my own way and give myself a pat on the back for not listening to the latest trend! All the kids get involved; it's a family Christmas at our place!

createbeauty · 21/11/2017 06:47

I want to go all out this year by putting up loads of fairy lights and make lots of 3D snowflakes to hang all over the place.

MakeTeaNotWar · 21/11/2017 06:55

Nothing too flash - artificial tree, lots of lights, assorted baubles from over the years and a wreath on the front door. I don't have a theme nor do I buy new decs every year.

AWholeLottaRosie · 21/11/2017 07:33

Normally we have a (very realistic) artificial tree with lots and lots of coloured baubles. However, an extremely playful and inquisitive puppy now lives in our house and I suspect the tree would just be too tempting for him Shock

I’ll still decorate the house for Christmas but everything will be high up and puppy-proof. Absolutely no tinsel anywhere. I’m a crafty person so I’ll just have to use my imagination and get making some suitable decorations.

vickyors · 21/11/2017 08:06

We put up the tree. We put lights around the room in the dining room, and we put tinsel on the window frames. I have cinnamon sticks on the radiators too.. makes the house smell like Christmas!

Novemberblues · 21/11/2017 08:16

Transform is our key decorating word. A tree and some swags or one or two roomy decorations isn't enough.
The main rooms have to be transformed. That means hanging large white snow flakes from the ceiling, inter mixed with smaller shiny ones. A white owl flying through this snowing ceiling... And a moon and stars in there. Sounds cluttered but everything bar moon and stars is white. It looks stunning and most importantly like we are not in our usual home anymore.
In the dining area it's nutcracker, classic themes, so nutcracker decorations, tall ones , sugar plum fairy ones, same on tree, mouse King, ballerinas... Little hanging nutcracker... Then loads of battery operated tea lights on all book shelves, different levels, battery operated candles on mantle piece, candles in corners of room, all battery (only have real candles on table for meal) on mantle piece we have a honebase purchased village, not flat its on the books then some is on the homebase mini fake wood burner stove (homebase purchase) again the different levels and interspersement between other things makes it interesting to look at. In the fireplace we hVe wood land creatures, a fox, badger etc. The children each have a small fake tree for their rooms and colours in their rooms are bright, zingy, blues silver, pink... Their decorations are bold and bright Grin, long foil decorations trailing over thier ceilings and foil chandeliers hanging down... Then once all is decorated... A secret trading, negotiation goes on, sometimes above board sometimes underground.. Where the dc sneak decorations upstairs from the main tree Grin onto their trees

CMOTDibbler · 21/11/2017 08:39

We have a lovely new Balsalm Hill tree which will look like the decorations box vomited over it as I love the mix of things from bits ds made in nursery, things given to me, bits picked up on my travels and so on. Twinkly lights in the front window, real wreath on the front door, stained glass decorations on the patio doors

Hertsgirl75 · 21/11/2017 08:58

A real tree with continental style decorations - mainly wooden handmade ones. All different and no theme. Many of these decorations were purchased by my parents in the 1980s from the German and Austrian markets. Each one has a story since then I have added some of my own.
No tinsel just white lights. Stunning

We have a fake tree but it's very thick and realistic compared to others I've had. I'd love a real one but with a dog who's 12 and a son who's 4 I'm thinking it's not such a good idea Grin

I tend to stick to minimal decorations but as DS is older I think he can do some Christmas decorations of his own this year and we will hang them up. I still have the ones DD made when she was little, and they go on the tree or ceiling every year. She is now 16, and doing Art GCSE so absolutely hates the embarrassment of her younger self's handmade decs and me pointing out to everyone "oh DD made these when she was 5/6/7" GrinI love them though so it's tough!

We don't do outside decorations but we have a little balcony so I think this year we may get something for there. I like the little reindeer that have the LED light strips on, they look cute. I shall keep an eye on the sales!

finleypop · 21/11/2017 09:30
