Are you one of the 56%* of parents who have never heard of water warts? Or are you able to spot the symptoms of water warts? Do you have experience of them in your own children?

In case you didn't know, water warts are a skin condition most common in childhood characterised by raised spots which can look like small pearls under the skin - this can last up to 18 months without treatment.

MolluTinc is a new treatment for water warts now available from pharmacies. It is the only product available in the UK to contain 10% potassium hydroxide and works by breaking down the water warts on the skin and allowing the body’s own immune system to tackle the virus that causes them. Applied twice daily for 2-10 days, it can help clear water warts within 1-5 weeks. It is suitable for those aged one year and upwards. For more information, visit mollutinc.co.uk/

Here’s what MolluTinc has to say: "whilst water warts only affects 5-11% of children aged 16 years and under, over 11% of children affected will experience a severe impact on quality-of-life as a result of the condition - we would love to know what you know about water warts, how you cope with them and your own tips on how to avoid them"

Please share your experiences with this condition. If you haven’t heard of water warts, we’d also love to hear from you about how you imagine them to be. All who share their tips for coping with water warts or their experiences of it on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 John Lewis voucher!

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

I've only ever read about them on MN but I'm pleased to see there is something that can help treat the visual appearance of it.

Gazelda · 09/08/2017 14:45

Never heard of them! And now I'm going to scrutinise my DD to check if she has them or not. Are they contagious? Do they hurt?

asuwere · 09/08/2017 14:49

As others have said, I'm assuming you mean Molluscum Contagiosum? Never heard of water warts. 2 of my DC had molluscum, we did a lot of googling and it seems best thing to do is leave them alone, which we did and they eventually disappeared. DS2 loved the name as it made him feel like Harry Potter :)

PerspicaciaTick · 09/08/2017 15:10

I've never come cross the name "water warts" before. DD had molluscum, when she was about 3yo. I left it as advised and it disappeared within about 3-4 months.

PerspicaciaTick · 09/08/2017 15:11

I meant to add - they had no impact on her quality of life at all and were a very minor issue. I have no idea how she caught them, presumably at nursery.

ParadiseCity · 09/08/2017 15:24

Oh yes you could brand any medical type thing Harry Potter and DD would want to catch it/use it. No need to dumb (ledore) down molluscum contagium after all accio-lly.

Rosehips · 09/08/2017 15:27

never heard the name water warts before. Molloscum is one of the gross childhood things i'm in denial about

SoupDragon · 09/08/2017 15:29

I have also never heard of water warts!

Molloscum, however, I know about. DS1 had some and I think DD did. We just left them alone and they vanished.

VickyRsuperstar · 09/08/2017 15:31

I have never heard of them being called water warts before! My husband once caught molluscum contagiosum when we went to Turkey. He and the kids had a Turkish bath and I guess that the towels weren't very clean. The kids were fine, but he caught them. There wasn't a lot of info on the Internet about them back in 2007 so he scrubbed them in the bath with a washing up sponge, this released the virus so his body recognized it and then after a brief time where a few more sprang up, they all started to disappear and went completely and noone else caught them. We didn't know that there was anything on the market that you could actually treat them with!

MakeTeaNotWar · 09/08/2017 15:41

Of course 56% of adults haven't heard of water warts as that isn't what they are called! My 4 year old has had molluscum for some months now and they are very unsightly. We haven't been treating them at all and am hopeful that they'll start to disappear soon.

magolin · 09/08/2017 15:47

Never heard of them and reading the description am not sure that I've ever come across them. Will be looking out for them now...

SolomanDaisy · 09/08/2017 15:57

I'm amazed 44% of parents have heard of them, I've only ever heard the molluscum name for them. I've never seen them in real life either. Are they actually caused by the wart virus?

CointreauVersial · 09/08/2017 17:27

LOL at "water warts". That's a bit of a marketing cock-up, isn't it? Plenty of parents will be looking for a treatment for molluscum, but who's going to buy a treatment for something nobody has heard of?!

Nice to know there's a treatment, though. DD1 suffered through them, and some got quite big and nasty.

HermanCakeDestroyer · 09/08/2017 17:31

Never heard of water warts before and never heard any other mums discuss them.
They sound unpleasant.

bertdynamite · 09/08/2017 17:33

I've never heard of water warts before, and luckily my children have never suffered from them . If they did, and it bothered them I would probably get this treatment.

RippleEffects · 09/08/2017 17:50

I haven't heard of water warts.

I'm a bit confused by the arm band clad child on the packaging.

Is the implication you can swim if you use the product, you catch this condition swimming, it's caught by children of armband wearing age?

Molluscum, I've heard about on here. As has already been posted, I though it was best left alone.

How does this work?

HoneyDragon · 09/08/2017 18:29

We're the 44% just being polite? Or didn't want to look stupid.

AngelwingsPetlamb · 09/08/2017 18:47

I have never heard of water warts, surely kids can just wear their regular little rubbery socks that they have to wear to prevent catching/spreading veruccas cant they to prevent catching water warts?
Or are they not catchable in that way ?
I'm always leery of putting anything on children's skin that could be detrimental to them.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 09/08/2017 18:49

Never heard of the term water warts - are they the same as verrucas?
I've heard of those & suffered from them (one?) as a child. Wasn't a problem - I remember getting some sort of treatment for it & it eventually disappeared. The more annoying thing was not being able to go swimming!
My DC have never had them so I've no recent experience.

Okite · 09/08/2017 18:55

Water warts is a ridiculous name, stick to molluscum for goodness sake! We don't need to be patronised. although I am adopting hair ninjas as a new name immediately

My DD has molluscum at the moment and we have used molludab on them. It seems to have done the trick and cleared them up in around a month (only did one application). I'm interested to know what the difference is between molludab and mollutinc or is that just rebranding too?

pongopig · 09/08/2017 20:05

My DS had some on his torso when he was about 6. They did not bother him in the slightest and disappeared of their own accord after a few months. If he had been bothered I would have looked into remedies like this treatment.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 09/08/2017 20:10

Water warts Grin

DS1 had molluscum and we were advised to leave it alone and touch as little as possible.

Doesn't need any kind of treatment.

Summergarden · 09/08/2017 20:17

I've never heard of either name for them.

I've never seen any on my children, and would be a bit worried if I saw those symptoms, so would take them to the GP.

Perhaps I'd consider using this treatment if they really looked unsightly or bothered the children.

1969angep · 09/08/2017 20:43

I've never heard of them by either name. The only swimming related thing I was aware of was verrucas. Perhaps I'm showing my age here! Possibly also because my DS is not a fan of the swimming pool so we've never personally experienced this issue.
I daresay that it sounds like an effective treatment but as I know nothing of the condition or alternative treatments I don't really feel in the right place to comment.

nightswimming1 · 09/08/2017 21:06

Never heard of water warts - silly name. But one of mine had molluscum and I did use a similar preparation that had half the strength of this one (5% pot hydroxide) and they cleared up within a week with no more spread so I do see the appeal of it rather than letting it linger.
