Lidl has a couple of questions about your weekly shop that they’d love you to answer over the next 48 hours!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?
  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

Please post your thoughts below and one MNer will win a £50 Love2Shop voucher (note it will be 2x£25 vouchers, one per transaction).

Good luck with the prize draw!

1.We go to Lidl, its next to my work and even cheaper than Asda.

  1. Its the cheapest, their food is generally good quality and it doesn't take ages to shop there as it's not huge.
  1. Mostly n/a. We buy coffee elsewhere but that's because it's the one thing we can't compromise on!

I go to Lidl or Aldi, mainly. The only reason for choosing on the day is that they are in very different locations so it depends what else I need to do when I'm out as to which is more convenient.

I prefer Lidl slightly except their individual porridge packets leak when you use them to measure the milk and they don't sell duck fat oven chips which Aldi do and which I am addicted to!

I tend to find with both shops they vary. The Aldi near me is older and cramped. Whereas the Lidl is new and huge. So that's why I prefer the Lidl. It also has a bakery, which I always think is a nice idea but I get put off by seeing flies land on the uncovered goods.

I shop in Lidl for price. My weekly budget (just me) is £50 and I can average less than that with Lidl. I also love their steak and it's a very good price!

I also shop at Waitrose for treats and Sainsbury for anything the other two don't sell (cat will only eat Whiskers cat food in his dotage).

I shop at Tesco mainly. It's the closest to me and is alongside a Lidl store. I don't shop in Lidl probably because of my preconceptions about the store. I went in a long time ago and it seemed to have mainly unbranded items from various countries and I wasn't too sure about buying them or what they would be like. I haven't been in there for a long time. At least a few years. I think i perceive of Lidl as being full of budget non quality food but to be honest I don't actually know what it really stands for.

lhlee62 · 08/08/2017 23:30

I usually go to Lidl, but at the moment my local one is shut whilst they expand the store. We have been driving to the next one which is a bit of a pain, but for the prices and produce it is worth it. There are other supermarkets closer, but I can't stand paying the higher prices. I like not having tons of variety it makes life so much easier and we love the in store bakery. I can't wait for the new store to open.

XenakisCarter · 08/08/2017 23:30

We do our weekly shop at Aldi - because it's cheap and convenient and not as horrific as I originally thought it might be. We estimate we save about a third compared to our previous shop at Sainsbury's.

I'm not sure I even know where my nearest Lidl is. Testimony perhaps to the pervasive, word-of-mouth advertising and reputation of Aldi.

KittyKat88 · 08/08/2017 23:31

I shop mainly at Aldi and occasionally pop into Lidl to see what deals they do. Food-wise, I prefer the layout of the Aldi shops, but Lidl win hands down with their bakery, and have some great deals on craft items, kids clothing and all sorts of weird and wonderful things! I've found some great gems in Lidl - fave German childhood biscuits I can't find anywhere else, a set of bongos for 'father's day' for my DH recently!

tillymint21 · 08/08/2017 23:45

We get a weekly online delivery from Sainsbury's. We don't have a Lidl near home, but there is one near my work so I often pop in to buy bits and pieces, especially the pastries and cakes to share with colleagues. I like the range and quality Lidl offer but am very familiar with the Sainsbury's website now so it's easy to stick with it and the wider range of brands appeals.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 08/08/2017 23:56

I shop at Asda mainly, I do pop into Lidl if I only need a couple of buys as it is my nearest supermarket.

The main reason I don't do my main shop at Lidl is because the range of lower calorie/ lower fat food is not as diverse as Asda, and I am trying to lose weight at the moment.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

M&S.

Convenience, including location of the store, without compromising too much on welfare.

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

Only ever do the odd top up shop at Lidl, if it's handy, at the time.

funkyfreks · 09/08/2017 00:04

I don't shop at Lidl, whenever I have been in the past (Quite some time ago) they didn't have the things I needed for my regular shop like pack lunch things, I might need to give it another try.

safariboot · 09/08/2017 00:08
  1. We order online from Tesco. Their deliveries have proven reasonably reliable with any substitutions sensible.

  2. N/A

  3. Last I checked, Lidl don't deliver.

Caelaj07 · 09/08/2017 00:10

I normally shop at Aldi because of the price and the quality. I would shop at Lidl but there isn't one near by. I love the pastry range at Lidl and the chocolate granola/crunch is the best I've tried too.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 09/08/2017 00:18

I do my weekly shop at Lidl. It's the same distance as Morrisons but much cheaper.

I wish they would stick coffee syrup then I would shop there exclusively

ILikeThatSong123 · 09/08/2017 00:26

1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
Tesco for main and top ups, as it is on the way from my workplace, next to the underground station that I use. So I can get anything we need each evening after work.
Also I like Morrisons for weekend big shopping as it sells everything we need and good quality products and good pricing. It is the nearest major supermarket and we even use Morrisons for dry cleaning, pharmacy, photograph developing etc. When I do school run, we pop into Morrisons for quick shopping as well as cafe, their cafe is also very good and children eat free every day with a paying adult. Nice treat when we go there.

2. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

When I go to Lidl, it is because of the price.

3. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?
There is a Lidl near my home but not that near. Its in an awkward location. I dont drive and it is out of the way so it is hard to get there and even harder to go back home having to carry shopping. Besides it is a smaller size store and selection of food is not good. Also I like seeing use by date on fresh fruit and veg but such products in Lidl do not have use by labels. It makes me uncomfortable, since I might keep them in the fridge with no clue and it might get really stale. With Use by label I would know..

Lydia30 · 09/08/2017 00:38

Our main shop is split between Morrisons, Aldi & Farm Foods. We go to these 3 as we buy the best value on the day.
Our nearest Lidl is around 30 minutes drive away in the next big town. Whenever we are in the town we do call in at Lidl as there are loads of things we like but we have never done a full shop there because of the distance.

IDismyname · 09/08/2017 03:40
  1. I'm a Lidls Girl - have been ever since I started going to a gym which happens to be opposite! I do our main shop there most weeks. However, I'll use Waitrose or Sainsbury's to fill in the gaps. I have a strapping teenager, who inhales Greek yoghurt and chicken almost daily, so I buy a lot there.
  1. I go for the convenience, the price, and the overall quality of products. I think your Hortus Gin should get a special mention... and I disagree about your nuts often being stale. They're fine in my store!
  1. Not applicable.
EasterRobin · 09/08/2017 04:29

I do my main shop in Aldi for all the things I can get there, then Sainsbury/Tesco for the branded items. Aldi is so much cheaper for my main food shop, but I really want my favourite brands for personal care and laundry products.

There isn't a Lidl in my town, otherwise I would consider it for my bulk food shop.

cwalliss82 · 09/08/2017 05:06

I have several supermarkets in the town but choose Asda mainly because I have staff discount but also find their products good value for money. I typically use Tesco for top-ups because they are closest. I have tried Lidl and Aldi but find that they have a limited range of unfamiliar products.

libra101 · 09/08/2017 05:10

I do my weekly shop at Tesco, mainly as it is the nearest location large supermarket. They stock a range of brands which my family prefers, have some good offers and I can do my main shop in one go.

We have used Lidl for our main shop and prices are excellent. Much cheaper than Tesco. However, many of the brands are unfamiliar to us, and smaller sizes are not often stocked. Tills are often busy as well.

I would use Lidl more often, but it would mean I would have to go to other supermarkets for some of our favourite brands.

ShangriLaLaLa · 09/08/2017 05:50
  1. I have no exclusive relationship with any shop. I will probably do two or three sizeable shops a week with (usually) Waitrose, Morrisons and Tesco. This may be supplemented with smaller shops at Lidl and M&S.
  1. Although rarely my big shop, I use Lidl as it's close to me and I like the themed weeks.
  1. I don't use Lidl for the larger shops as the range of products is restricted and there is never a guarantee that I will be able to buy all the items on my shopping list.

Love Lidl though!

bugaboo218 · 09/08/2017 05:58

I shop in Sainsbury's. It is convenient and it's own standard and basic own branded stuff are usually both good quality. I can also get all of the branded stuff I need and the free from range is good.

I have been in a Lidl's store and the prices on basic items like biscuits, cleaning stuff, pet food were good and I cannot fault the nappies that I purchased. Bakery stuff was lovely and wide selection of deli stuff.

I do not shop regularly in Lidl's though because the nearest Lidl to me is fifteen miles away. There is not enough disabled parking and in my local store you have to enter your car registration to park, which is a load of faff.

I do not enjoy the shopping experience itself in Lidl whenever I go the store is busy, not enough tills open and I hate the way you have to put your trolley how the check out operator wants it going through the till. The packing bench is always busy too.

My nearest Lidl is also an older store and quite grubby looking this puts me off a little bit. There are no toilets or baby changing facilities and then you have the aisle of random special buys. Plus I cannot buy everything I need in.Lidl, so would have to go elsewhere anyway.

lisara79 · 09/08/2017 07:57
  1. I don't tend to go to just one place. I go mainly to Asda and Lidl but also go to iceland and marks and Spencer.
  1. I do go to Lidl because of the price, the fresh bakery area and that it is close to me.
  1. I can't just go to Lidl because I can't get everything I need... particularly the pet food brands I need, certain meats and toiletries. if I could, I would shop there mainly.
Rosehips · 09/08/2017 08:15

I alternate Morrison's Sainsburys asda. Sainsburys has better quality stuff but small. Morrison's decent quality but very boring. Asda good for non food stuff. Don't ship at lidl find it very claustrophobic and full of banded stuff

Changingagain · 09/08/2017 08:16

I use Tesco for my main weekly shop as they're the only ones in the area who have decent stock and they also do home delivery.
I've never been to lidl as it would take about 10 hours there and back with a very expensive ferry ticket!

ItsInTheDogsMouth · 09/08/2017 08:19

I do my weekly shop in the coop as it is my nearest supermarket. My nearest Lidl is 25 miles away, if it were closer, i would certainly do the majority of my shopping there. I'm hoping Lidl offer an online/home delivery option. That would be perfect!
