Lidl has a couple of questions about your weekly shop that they’d love you to answer over the next 48 hours!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?
  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

Please post your thoughts below and one MNer will win a £50 Love2Shop voucher (note it will be 2x£25 vouchers, one per transaction).

Good luck with the prize draw!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

I go to various shops. My main shop is Aldi, because it is on the way home from work.

I don't

I stopped going to Lidi because I could never get a car parking space.

  1. I go to Tesco usuallyas it's the closest or sometimes Asda. They are both great value for money.

  2. I rarely go to Lidl

  3. When I have been to Lidl, I haven't been able to find a very good vegetarian selection, so there's no point shopping there for me (the rest of the family aren't veggie, but I don't want to have to do two separate shops.)

Marg2k8 · 08/08/2017 20:13

We get our main weekly shop from Asda using click and collect. Asda is nearest to us and it suits us. I do sometimes pop into Lidl for other bits and pieces.

omgitslani · 08/08/2017 20:19

Over the last six months, I have started using Lidl for our main weekly shop. The prices are amazing and they don't seem to lose anything in quality because of it. We have a Lidl quite close to us so it is convenient. The only problem we have is that there is limited parking and often queues into the carpark at peak times so we have to pick our moments for shopping. The range of products isn't always as good as at other supermarkets so I sometimes have to do a top up shop at tescos.

  1. I do our main shop in lidl - it's good value, the fruit and veg is much better than the supermarket and its easy to get to and park. I hate large shops too so like that you can find what you need in lidl easily
  1. Main reasons for using lidl as above
Compermo · 08/08/2017 20:23

I do my main weekly shop at Tesco, because it's virtually on my doorstep (5 minutes away), and it's a very large store. I do like Lidle, but our nearest store is not very easy to get to, although it's only about 15/20 minutes away. It's a much smaller store, and access is from a very busy major road, but exiting by a right turn through 3 lanes of traffic is hazardous to say the least. I find this quite off-putting. If it was easier, ie a back road exit (which would be perfectly possible), I would shop there often.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
No pattern at all. I shop when I can - sometimes at the convenience store nearby, sometimes Waitrose, or Sainsbury's or Aldi - just depends on where I am. I like to go to Lidl, because it is cheaper, but the queues are massive. It is open later on a Sunday than the others (as it is smaller) - so I go there Sunday evening.
  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?
I like the price of fruit and vegetables - good range too. The cheese is very good. Chocolate is good. I am used to German Lidl which is a bit more luxurious and even cheaper.

Queues are very long, as it is so popular. We only have a small Lidl near us and I miss the deals in the centre aisle. if we had a big one, I would be there much more.
rocketriffs · 08/08/2017 20:40
  1. Aldi
  2. I will pop into Lidl if I'm near a Lidl store, eg when on holiday.
  3. Lidl used to be my main store for shopping until I moved to a different town. The Lidl store nearest me is a good distance away, and there are two Aldi stores closer to where I live at present.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Lidl! Yes really. We have three options in our town - Co-op, Lidl and Waitrose. I love Waitrose, but can't afford to do all my shopping there. I buy treats there instead (pastries, French lemon sirop drink, swanky sausages, puddings etc). The Co-op is great for a top up shop but not a weekly shop. Lidl is my weekly shopping location for many reasons.

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?
Price, range and brands are all a factor for me. The prices are consistently lower than anywhere else including Aldi. The range includes lots of foods direct from the France, Germany etc and I love that. The meat and eggs are from local suppliers which is a major issue to me, and it's great to see the local support for the farming industry in the UK. The cheeses, cold meats and salads are second to none. I would like to see the middle aisles reduced - they are taking over our store which is a shame. I'd also like it if we could request specific items to be trialled in store such as gluten free products or unpackaged vegetables (1kg carrots and 2kg potatoes are a waste for 2 people).

I can't get what I'd call good quality sausages in Lidl, I buy them elsewhere. Same for the types of pastry I like - lemon or apple for example. Please bring in gluten free on a permanent basis, even if only bread and wraps. And if you could stock French lemon sirop, I'd buy the lot!!

clarabella12 · 08/08/2017 20:52

we tend to go to Lidl or Aldi, we're very fortunate and have all major shops within 2 miles.

cocochips · 08/08/2017 20:53
  1. Lidl as the prices are great
  2. convenient and good food

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

We go to Tesco as it is the only big supermarket in our town.

The closest Lidl to us is about a 25 minute car ride away whereas the Tesco is less than 5 minutes. I would like to shop at Lidl for the prices but it's just too much hassle for us to get to.

socat · 08/08/2017 21:14

I generally use a couple of online supermarkets to deliver groceries and local shops to top-up, or a main shop, when not getting a delivery in.

I would like to use Lidl but not very practical for distance and range of merchandise there, don't feel can do a full shop @ Lidl, too there is often big queues.

Lastly it would take a while to get use to unfamiliar brands though I often choose own brands than big names.

freedomofspeech · 08/08/2017 21:17
  1. Aldi as it's cheapest and closest.
2 + 3. Never been to Lidl as not one near to me unfortunately but would love to. I've seen lots of great vegan food advertised there.
cheekychicken24 · 08/08/2017 21:21

We do our main shop at Aldi - it's good value, and the closest supermarket to us by a few miles. I don't even know where our nearest Lidl is. I don't recall driving past one while out & about. Having never shopped there, I certainly wouldn't drive out of my way to go, however good the value might be. If there was one as close as Aldi, then I'd certainly try it.

maria08k · 08/08/2017 21:22
  1. We split our mean shop between Aldi & Tesco - both are local to us. Aldi appeals to us for value and for certain items, Tesco for earning clubcard points and for vastness of choice.

  2. We do-not currently shop at Lidl.

  3. We have no Lidl close to us sadly, otherwise i would try it. My mum lives in a village just 12 miles from us and they have a Lidl opening in September. We will most certainly be giving it a go when we visit her every Saturday.

Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

We go to Tesco for our mainly weekly shop, as it is the closest and sells everything we need, we also like a lot of their own brand food.

If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

I don't shop in Lidl because it's that bit further away. Both of the Lidl's near me are in town an you have to face a lot more traffic to get there. I like that Tesco is out of town and minimal effort to get there. I also am unsure if Lidl would have comparative products to the ones we like from Tesco.

oldiebutgoodie · 08/08/2017 21:25

I put my entire shop in Morrison's on line, check it out, take a note of the price and then take it as a list to Aldi which I drive past on my way to work.

Then whatever is cheaper in Aldi I buy there. I then delete those from the online shop and have the remainder delivered.

This gives me a great deal of satisfaction as I can see the saving, usually between £20 and £40 a week. Smile

ASDA - is local and has a car park with no restrictions. Quality and price very competitive.

Go to Lidl at least once a fortnight for "things we love" - price and quality all good but seven miles away.
twinklenic · 08/08/2017 21:26

i do mine at asda , as i can usually get absolutely everything i need there in one hit. There are lots of things i prefer at lidle including the kids nappies and pull ups but i usually end up coming home still needing things as i find the range isnt vast enough

Catcheronthesly · 08/08/2017 21:34

I shop at Aldi because it's convenient and good value for money. I also really enjoy some of their products that are not available in other stores.
I like Lidl, particularly the bakery, but our nearest one is the other side of the city. There are 3 Aldi's between our house and the nearest Lidl! I think Lidl has a better layout and seems tidier with a nicer shopping experience than Aldi. However, although I know it's still value for money I'm not sure if it is as cheap as Aldi as I don't shop there often enough to know.

CakeMonster100 · 08/08/2017 21:35
  1. I split my weekly shop between Lidl and Tesco usually. Tesco is our closet supermarket and is quite a large one so I can always pick up the specific things I need (eg the only kitchen towel I like, garlic butter, the only washing powder that my son doesn't react to etc). They are also open very late so I can go without the children after my husband gets home and used to have quite good reductions then (currently it's been a bit rubbish for reductions).
  1. I prefer going to our local Lidl (although parking is a nightmare!) As there are lots of things the family like at cheaper prices than elsewhere. It is also lovely and small to be able to whip round and pay in less than 30 minutes while still getting a full family shop. I also find there is a better variety of fruit and vegetables than at our big Tesco (aubergine and pomegranate particularly). I also love the specials - particularly the running kit, stationery and kids toys.
  1. I think I'd miss the Tesco points most if I switch to just using Lidl. And the parking is much easier at Tesco - the spaces at our local Lidl are tiny and several have very awkward pillars in the way.
Spices001 · 08/08/2017 21:40

I shop in Aldi, as it stocks all I need & is close

I don't go to Lidl as a lot of produce I use isn't stocked

pfcpompeysarah · 08/08/2017 21:40

I shop at Aldi for my main weekly shopping, mostly because its close to home and is more affordable than other supermarkets. I have shopped at Lidl in the past but find it to be a bit higgledy-piggledy, with the layout confusing me, also if comparing products then I consider those from Aldi to be much better.

LeeR1985 · 08/08/2017 21:42

I do my main weekly shop in lidl, its a 5 minute walk from my house. The main reason is location but the food is great and it's a fraction of the cost of shopping anywhere else. Staff are lovely too
